Particulate matter-induced lung cancer metastasis is inhibited by ginsenoside Rg3.

The risk of exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been consistently highlighted globally owing to its detrimental effects on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and in the development of lung cancer. Additionally, PM promotes cancer cell metastasis; however, research elucidating the precise mechanisms underlying this phenomenon and the strategies to inhibit it remains limited. The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism underlying PM-induced cancer metastasis and investigate the preventive role of ginsenoside Rg3. We treated macrophages with PM and confirmed an increase in th…

Quantitative determination of the mineral content of settleable particulate matter samples.

Settleable particulate matter (SPM) samples are characterised by having very similar qualitative compositions. Therefore, there is a need for a sensitive analysis method that can provide valid quantitative information when facing new research challenges. Establishing a valid and repeatable quantitative mineralogical analysis method is essential in order to establish limits to the concentration of certain mineral phases to, in turn, protect human health and ecosystems. An analytical and sample preparation protocol that can achieve the homogenisation of the standard and test samples has been des…

Fine particulate matter and ovarian health: A review of emerging risks.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution has raised significant public concerns, especially for vulnerable populations. Studies have indicated the association between PM2.5 and ovarian disorders, although the mechanisms underlying the effects have not yet been fully elucidated. In this review, we elucidated three main conditions pertaining to ovarian function that may result from exposure to PM2.5: diminished ovarian reserve, polycystic ovary syndrome, and infertility. Specific effects of ovarian disorders caused by PM2.5 are discussed, including reactive oxygen species, apoptosis, DNA damage…

Ambient particulate matter exposure causes visual dysfunction and retinal neuronal degeneration.

PM2.5 pollution is related to neurotoxic and vascular effects in eye diseases such as glaucoma. This study investigates the adverse effects of PM2.5 exposure on visual function and retinal neurons. A versatile aerosol concentration enrichment system was used to expose mice to either control air or PM2.5 polluted air. Six months after PM2.5 exposure, visual function was measured by electroretinography (ERG). Hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunofluorescence staining were used for histopathological analysis. Protein markers of apoptosis, astrocytic reactivity, inflammatory cytokines, lipid p

Calibration of low-cost particulate matter sensors for coal dust monitoring.

Mining-induced coal dust causes various respiratory diseases to mine workers mainly coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Currently available underground monitors are expensive and bulky. These disadvantages limit them for regulatory sample monitoring purposes. Moreover, personal exposure levels for most miners remain unknown, risking them to potential overexposures. Low-cost light scattering particulate matter (PM) sensors offer a potential solution to this problem with the capability to characterize PM concentration with high spatio-temporal resolution. However, these sensors require precise c…

Aerobic exercise ameliorates particulate matter-induced lung injury in aging rats.

Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is an inflammatory-inducing factor that is considered to be related to many adverse respiratory problems, especially in the elderly. This study aimed to examine whether pre-exercise training could prevent pulmonary injury induced by urban PM2.5 in aging rats and investigate its relationship with inflammatory pathways. Male Wistar rats (aged 16 months) were randomly divided into four groups: sedentary, exercise, sedentary + PM2.5 exposure, and exercise + PM2.5 exposure. All rats in exercise-related groups were treadmill-trained for 8 weeks (65%-75% VO2max for 30 m…

Protective Effect of GHX02 Extract on Particulate Matter-Induced Lung Injury.

Industrial development, along with the rapid growth of the economy, has greatly improved the quality of life in humans. Moreover, advancements in medical technology have increased life expectancy. Small particles increase airway inflammation when they penetrate the alveoli. We observed that GHX02 decreased the frequency and delayed the onset time of citric acid-induced coughing in guinea pigs. A phenol red secretion assay indicated that the GHX02 extract exhibits potent expectorant activity. The GHX02 extract also greatly reduced leukocyte levels. Our results indicate that GHX02 inhibits airwa

Achyranthis radix Extract Improves Urban Particulate Matter-Induced Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial inflammatory disease that severely impairs patients' quality of life. Particulate matter comprises a harmful mixture of particles less than 10 μm in size, which on contact with the eye, causes inflammation in the cornea/conjunctival epithelium, threatening eye health and triggering the onset of DED. Achyranthis radix is an ingredient of traditional medicine generally used for treating osteoporosis, trauma, and thrombosis in Asian countries. However, the effect of Achyranthis radix on eye health has not been elucidated. In this study, we evaluate the pr…

Relative toxicities of major particulate matter constituents on birthweight in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) during pregnancy has been linked to lower newborn birthweight, making it a toxic exposure because lower birthweight is a risk factor for chronic disease and mortality. However, the toxicity of major constituents of PM2.5 and how they compare to each other remain uncertain. METHODS: We assigned address-specific exposure to PM2.5, elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), nitrate, and sulfate averaged over the entire period of pregnancy for each birth in Massachusetts from 2001 to 2012 using a high-resolution exposure mod

Fine particulate matter damages and value added in the US economy.

Emissions of most pollutants that result in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) formation have been decreasing in the United States. However, this trend has not been uniform across all sectors or regions of the economy. We use integrated assessment models (IAMs) to compute marginal damages for PM2.5-related emissions for each county in the contiguous United States and match location-specific emissions with these marginal damages to compute economy-wide gross external damage (GED) due to premature mortality. We note 4 key findings: First, economy-wide, GED has decreased by more than 20% from 2008 t…

Impact of fossil fuel emissions and particulate matter on pulmonary health.

In recent decades, several national and international legislative efforts have aimed to improve air quality standards and limit major pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, linked to several public health problems. In recent years, particulate matter sources have become an important cause of several pulmonary and systemic diseases. Specifically, several studies examining cigarette smoke particulates have discovered the important contribution that mast cells play in the pathogenesis and progression of smoking-related lung disease and other particulate matter-…

Particulate matter-associated micronuclei frequencies in maternal and cord blood lymphocytes.

Studies associate particulate matter (PM) exposure with pulmonary, cardiovascular, and neurologic diseases. Elevated levels of coarse (PM10) and fine (PM2.5) PM have been reported in the Mexico City metropolitan area during the last two decades. There is limited information if these conditions affect newborns. We associated maternal exposure to PM reported by the monitoring stations considering the place of residence of each participant with the presence of genotoxic damage (cytome analysis) in maternal and umbilical cord blood (UCB) lymphocytes. Eighty-four healthy women in their last quarter…

Air pollutant particulate matter 2.5 induces dry eye syndrome in mice.

In this study, we explored the effects of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) eye drops on the ocular surface structure and tear function in mice and established a novel animal model for dry eye research. We found that, following treatment with PM2.5, the tear volume and, the tear film break-up time showed statistical differences at each time point (P < 0.05). The FL score of the PM2.5-treated group was higher than that of others (P < 0.05). The average number of corneal epithelial layer cells in groups A and B was significantly lower than that in group C (P < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy an…

Particulate matter air pollution and respiratory impact on humans and animals.

Air pollution is now fully acknowledged to be a public health problem and a social issue. Particulate matter (PM) concentration has been linked with several clinical manifestations of pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases and is associated with morbidity and mortality induced by respiratory diseases both in human and animals. Current research on airborne particle-induced health effects investigates the critical characteristics of particulate matter that determine their biological effects. Scientific evidence assessed that the size of the airborne particles and their surface area determine the …

Epigenetic Biomarkers for Risk Assessment of Particulate Matter Associated Lung Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter directly emitted into the air by sources such as combustion processes and windblown dust, or formed in the atmosphere by transformation of emitted gases are the major contributors to air pollution that triggers a diverse array of human pathologies including lung cancer. The mortality in lung cancer is usually high as the disease is not symptomatic at its early treatable stage. Moreover, available methods for screening are costly and mainly rely on imaging techniques which lack sufficient sensitivity and specificity. Despite progress in the identification of bioma…

Effect of Particulate Matter Air Pollution on Cardiovascular Oxidative Stress Pathways.

SIGNIFICANCE: Particulate matter (PM) air pollution is a leading cause of global cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Understanding the biological action of PM is of particular importance in improvement of public health. Recent Advances: Both fine (PM <2.5 μM) and ultrafine particles (<0.1 μM) are widely believed to mediate their effects through redox regulated pathways. A rather simplistic graded ramp model of redox stress has been replaced by a more sophisticated understanding of the role of oxidative stress in signaling, and the realization that many of the observed effects may involve d…

Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter and semen quality in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVES: Environmental exposure to chemicals has been considered a potential factor contributing to deteriorated semen quality. However, previous literature on exposure to air pollution and semen quality is inconsistent. We therefore investigated the health effects of short-term and long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on semen quality in Taiwanese men from the general population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 6475 male participants aged 15-49 years who participated in a standard medical examination programme in Taiwan between 2001 and 2014. Semen qu…
