[Patient- and donor-dependent factors in descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty and their impact on visual acuity and quality of life].

BACKGROUND: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) is the gold standard for the treatment of endothelial corneal decompensation. The rapid postoperative improvement in visual acuity and the lower rejection rate of this minimally invasive procedure compared to penetrating keratoplasty justify the high acceptance of DMEK. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse the general conditions for an optimal visual outcome after DMEK by recording patient- and graft-dependent factors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 72 eyes were retrospectively analysed in which Fuchs' endothelial

The Minimally Important Difference (MID) in Visual Acuity That Represents Changes in Patients' Quality of Life.

To assess the minimal change in visual acuity perceived by patients as important in different eye-related interventions. PubMed was utilized to search articles on each of the four major interventions: cataract surgery, keratoplasty, different glaucoma treatments, and refractive eye surgery, each combined with quality of life (QoL) and visual acuity keywords. The search was narrowed to articles between 2000 and 2023. Seventy-four major articles were thus reviewed. Of these, 27 studies reviewed the results of cataract surgery, 20 studies discussed the effect of keratoplasty interventions on the

Pain sensitivity and tactile spatial acuity are altered in healthy musicians as in chronic pain patients.

Extensive training of repetitive and highly skilled movements, as it occurs in professional classical musicians, may lead to changes in tactile sensitivity and corresponding cortical reorganization of somatosensory cortices. It is also known that professional musicians frequently experience musculoskeletal pain and pain-related symptoms during their careers. The present study aimed at understanding the complex interaction between chronic pain and music training with respect to somatosensory processing. For this purpose, tactile thresholds (mechanical detection, grating orientation, two-point d

Near visual acuity: a simple measure of practical significance in insulin-treated diabetic patients.

The value of measuring near visual acuity as a predictor of loss of independence in administering insulin and monitoring blood or urine glucose has been assessed in 110 insulin-treated diabetic patients. Near visual acuity was simple to measure in the clinic setting, and correlated well with 6 m acuity. Fourteen patients depended on an assistant either to draw up the correct dose of insulin (n = 12), inject the insulin (n = 7) or to monitor blood or urine glucose (n = 12). Of these 14 patients only one, who was demented, had near visual acuity better than N.12. Two other patients had near visu

Machine learning assisted differentiation of low acuity patients at dispatch: The MADLAD randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Resource Constrained Situations (RCS) at Emergency Medical Dispatch centers where there are more patients requiring an ambulance than there are available ambulances are common. Machine Learning (ML) techniques offer a promising but largely untested approach to assessing relative risks among these patients. The study aims to establish whether the provision of ML-based risk scores predicting patient outcomes improves the ability of dispatchers to identify patients at high risk for deterioration in RCS and dispatch the first available ambulance to them. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We perfo
