Drusen analysis in a human-machine synergistic framework.

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate how human-machine intelligence can be integrated for efficient image analysis of drusen in age-related macular degeneration and to validate the method in 2 large, independently graded, population-based data sets. METHODS: We studied 358 manually graded color slides from the Netherlands Genetic Isolate Study. All slides were digitized and analyzed with a user-interactive drusen detection algorithm for the presence and quantity of small, intermediate, and large drusen. A graphic user interface was used to preprocess the images, choose a region of interest, select appr

Gray matter changes in chronic heavy cannabis users: a voxel-level study using multivariate pattern analysis approach.

Recent structural MRI studies on gray matter (GM) volumes using group-level mass-univariate statistical analysis suggest that chronic and heavy cannabis exposure may affect brain region-based morphology. In this prospective study, we use a multivariate pattern analysis approach to investigate the voxel-level change of GM densities in chronic heavy cannabis users. Principal component analysis and linear support vector machine are used in this study, resulting in an 88.1% separation between chronic heavy cannabis users (N = 20) and non-cannabis healthy controls (HCs, N = 22) through leave-one-ou

Unsupervised machine learning for the discovery of latent disease clusters and patient subgroups using electronic health records.

Machine learning has become ubiquitous and a key technology on mining electronic health records (EHRs) for facilitating clinical research and practice. Unsupervised machine learning, as opposed to supervised learning, has shown promise in identifying novel patterns and relations from EHRs without using human created labels. In this paper, we investigate the application of unsupervised machine learning models in discovering latent disease clusters and patient subgroups based on EHRs. We utilized Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a generative probabilistic model, and proposed a novel model name

Early Target Object Prediction in Action Observation.

Previous research has shown that observers can predict the target object of a grasping action from early hand preshaping cues. However, critical questions remain unexplored: how predictions adapt to the available kinematic information and evolve throughout the movement timeline. We address these fundamental gaps by combining kinematic analysis with machine-learning approaches. Using motion capture technology, we recorded reach-to-grasp actions toward large and small objects and had participants predict target size from hand kinematics at varying time points. Our analysis revealed that predicti

The potential of machine learning in classifying relapse and non-relapse in children with clubfoot based on movement patterns.

The diverse nature and timing of a clubfoot relapse pose challenges for early detection. A relapsed clubfoot typically involves a combination of deformities affecting a child's movement pattern across multiple joint levels, formed by a complex kinematic chain. Machine learning algorithms have the capacity to analyse such complex nonlinear relationships, offering the potential to train a model that assesses whether a child has relapsed clubfoot based on their movement pattern. Hence, this study aimed to explore to what extent biomechanical data collected with three-dimensional movement analysis

Combined structural and resting-state functional MRI analysis of sexual dimorphism in the young adult human brain: an MVPA approach.

There has been growing interest recently in the use of multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to decode information from high-dimensional neuroimaging data. The present study employed a support vector machine-based MVPA approach to identify the complex patterns of sex differences in brain structure and resting-state function. We also aimed to assess the role of anatomy on functional sex differences during rest. One hundred and forty healthy young Chinese adults (70 men and 70 women) underwent structural and resting-state functional MRI scans. Gray matter density and regional homogeneity (ReHo) w

Predicting PD-L1 + CD8 - status in non-small cell lung cancer tissue from clinical indicators using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and CD8-positive (CD8 + ) T-cell infiltration in tumor tissue are associated with prognosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the prognostic value of combined PD-L1/CD8 immune phenotyping in surgically treated NSCLC and the feasibility of predicting high-risk immune phenotypes using routine clinical indicators remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of PD-L1/CD8 status and to develop machine learning models for predicting PD-L1-positive/CD8-negative (PD-L1 + CD8 - ) status. Feasibility of neurological prognostication after pediatric cardiac arrest with a reduced number of EEG electrodes.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG) for neurological prognostication after pediatric cardiac arrest (pCA) shows promise, but is resource-intensive, limiting implementation. Because postanoxic injury causes generalized EEG background pattern changes, fewer electrodes for monitoring may suffice, which could reduce workload. We assessed whether electrode reduction affects visual EEG assessment and the prognostic performance of machine learning models for the prediction of outcome after pCA. METHODS: We retrospectively included children (<18 years old) after in- or out of hospital CA who w

Side-Aware Meta-Learning for Cross-Dataset Listener Diagnosis With Subjective Tinnitus.

With the development of digital technology, machine learning has paved the way for the next generation of tinnitus diagnoses. Although machine learning has been widely applied in EEG-based tinnitus analysis, most current models are dataset-specific. Each dataset may be limited to a specific range of symptoms, overall disease severity, and demographic attributes; further, dataset formats may differ, impacting model performance. This paper proposes a side-aware meta-learning for cross-dataset tinnitus diagnosis, which can effectively classify tinnitus in subjects of divergent ages and genders fr

Stroke risks in women vs men in Asian patients with atrial fibrillation: A temporal trend analysis and a comparison of the CHA2DS2-VASc and CHA2DS2-VA stroke risk stratification scores.

BACKGROUND: The 2024 European guidelines for atrial fibrillation (AF) recommended the use of the sex-less CHA2DS2-VASc score (ie, CHA2DS2-VA) for stroke risk assessment, but this has been less well-validated in Asian cohorts. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to perform a temporal analysis of stroke risks in women vs men with AF in Taiwan and to compare the performance of CHA2DS2-VASc vs CHA2DS2-VA scores. METHODS: We used Taiwan's National Health Database (2000-2021) to compare CHA2DS2-VASc and CHA2DS2-VA scores by 2-year intervals, assessing performance with net reclassification index, integrated discri
