OBJECTIVE: Pellagra is a nutritional deficiency disease associated with niacin (vitamin B3) deficiency. The history of pellagra is well documented for Europe and the USA, but less is known about the prevalence in sub-Saharan African countries. This study documents the history of pellagra in South Africa, as diagnosed based on dermatological symptoms.
DESIGN: Scoping review of information from scientific databases, library archives, other archives and record services and from Statistics South Africa.
SETTING: South Africa, 1897-2019.
PARTICIPANTS: South African.
RESULTS: Pellagra was first

Epidemics of nutritional deficiency disorders, caused by a lack of vitamins and minerals, were once very common and claimed many victims. Fortunately, advances in medicine have led to improved diets and a decline in the incidence of these disorders so that they are now seen clinically less often. Reminders of diseases such as scurvy, chlorosis, and pellagra can be found in artwork from the 19th century. The striking clinical presentation of these diseases caught the attention of artists who used them as themes in their work. We discuss the following three works of art: Gustave Doré's engraving

BACKGROUND: Pellagra, which is caused by a deficiency of niacin and tryptophan, the precursor of niacin, is a rare disease in developed countries where alcoholism is a major risk factor due to malnutrition and lack of B vitamins. Although pellagra involves treatable dementia and psychosis, it is often underdiagnosed, especially in developed countries.
CASE REPORT: In Japan, a 37-year-old man presented to the emergency department with altered mental status and seizures. Wernicke encephalopathy and alcohol withdrawal were suspected. The patient was treated with multivitamins, which did not incl

Pellagra is a nutrient deficiency disease caused by insufficient niacin levels. Recent studies have shown that numbers of epidermal Langerhans cells decreased in other diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies, including necrolytic migratory erythema and acrodermatitis enteropathica. Epidermal Langerhans cells are capable of modulating or even halting the inflammatory reaction. The aim of this study was to examine changes in the number of Langerhans cells and other dendritic cells, and maturation of epidermal Langerhans cells in the lesional and adjacent non-lesional skin in pellagra patient

Pellagra usually results from niacin deficiency and presents with the classic triad of dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. It is most commonly associated with malnutrition and poverty and is extremely rare in industrialized societies. Furthermore, pellagra can be induced by special clinical conditions that interfere with the intake, absorption, and metabolism of niacin. Because of its detrimental effects on health and its favorable prognosis after supplementation of nicotinamide, the importance of early diagnosis and treatment should be emphasized. Herein, we report a case of pellagra in a you

An 81-year-old male with hormone refractory prostate cancer, received chemotherapy of Docetaxel, Estramustine and dexamethasone as an outpatient. After 4 courses of chemotherapy, he was admitted to our hospital in December 2007 because of general fatigue, appetite loss and erythema of the back of hands and face. He was diagnosed with pellagra. Nicotinic acid was administered and the symptoms disappeared. An 80-year-old male with hormone refractory prostate cancer, received chemotherapy of Docetaxel, Estramustine and dexamethasone without admission. After 8 courses of the chemotherapy, appetite

Pellagra is associated with low levels of vitamin B3 (niacin) and/or tryptophan and often involves other other B vitamins. Since the time Gasper Casal first described the disease in 1972, it was observed that the patients with pellagra were all poor, subsisted mainly on maize, and rarely ate fresh meat. Subsequent occurrences have been in the form of epidemic outbreaks, consequent to either introduction to maize as a major food or increased consumption of other niacin-deficient diets like Jowar (Sorgum vulgare). The virtual disappearance of pellagra as an endemic health problem in recent years

INTRODUCTION: Pellagra is an exceptional disorder in France. The classical description of pellagra associates a photoinduced rash with neurological impairment and intestinal dysfunction. Without adapted treatment, the progression is fatal.
CASE REPORT: A 62 year-old women developed a photoinduced rash, composed of circular and erythematous elements with pustular edges. She also had panniculitis, peripheral neuropathy, depressive mood and diarrhea. Her medical past was marked by epilepsy treated with sodium valproate and hydantoin. Biological exams revealed lowered plasma levels of vitamins PP

Lesions of the brain stem and cerebellum due to nutritional deficiencies are mostly seen in chronic alcohol abuse and more rarely in severe malnutrition. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman, found dead in the family flat. She presented cachexia (167 cm, 25 kg) and multiple hematomas of the limbs. Postmortem examination revealed lesions due to peritonitis. Neuropathological examination showed severe atrophy of the corpus callosum and central neuronal chromatolysis, which are observed in pellagra. Inflammatory colitis or celiac disease was not found. Toxicological analysis was negative, in

Oral lactose and glucose/galactose loading tests were done in Bantu children convalescing from kwashiorkor and pellagra. Small bowel biopsies and disaccharidase estimations were performed in all except 2 patients. Lactose absorption was more impaired and intestinal lactase levels were lower in the pellagra than in the kwashiorkor group. The fact that diarrhoea after admission to hospital was less common in pellagra than kwashiorkor was ascribed to a lesser lactose load due to the early introduction of a mixed diet in the former group, in comparison with milk feeds only in the latter group. The

BACKGROUND: Pellagra caused by niacin deficiency in alcoholics can be easily misdiagnosed because of similar symptoms to other alcohol-related diseases and the lack of the classical triad of signs.
AIM: This study aimed to define the clinical presentation of alcoholic pellagra for early diagnosis and timely treatment.
METHODS: The clinical data of 16 alcohol-dependent patients who had pellagra and treated in our hospital from January 2002 to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The local medical ethics committee approval (Medical Ethics Committee of Affiliated Hospital of XuZhou Medi

Clinical pellagra is a multiple vitamin-deficiency disease. The clinical manifestations include dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia; the result is often death. Photosensitivity has also been associated with pellagra. Other clinical findings may depend on the nutritional status of the patient. Pellagrins may not have specific cutaneous pathological findings, although necrolytic migratory erythema has been reported in clinical pellagra. Most pellagrins respond to niacin combined with a high-protein diet, although other concomitant vitamin deficiencies may prevent the use of niacin. Clinical pella

In 22 patients with alcoholic encephalopathies, chromatolysis similar to that reported in endemic pellagra was found on postmortem examination. No gross macroscopic changes were seen in affected areas and only neurons were involved. The changes consisted of central chromatolysis, seen predominantly in the brainstem, especially in the pontine nuclei, where they were constant, and in the cerebellar dentate nuclei. Nuclei of cranial nerves (mainly the third, sixth, seventh and eighty), the reticular nuclei, arcuate nuclei and posterior horn cells, were also markedly affected. Changes were sometim

Pellagra is a nutritional deficiency caused by the inadequate intake or metabolism of niacin (vitamin B3) and its precursor tryptophan. While pellagra is now rare in developed countries, individuals with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or chronic alcoholism remain at risk of developing this condition. We report a fatal case of pellagra in a woman with anorexia nervosa. Autopsy revealed severe emaciation, Casal's necklace, and additional cutaneous findings, including Russell's sign. Histopathological examination of the neck lesion revealed characteristic psoriasiform changes. Postmort

This paper provides a case study of one medical experiment conducted in 1915 by the United States Public Health Service in collaboration with the Mississippi State Penitentiary. The experiment was non-therapeutic and its objective was to induce pellagra (a vitamin deficiency disease) in twelve healthy White male prisoners to confirm its etiology. Extant archival records produced by the convict participants, state politicians, and health researchers underscore that the men selected for the pellagra experiment were unique among incarcerated people in Mississippi at the time: they were White, wea
