Evaluation of novel disinfection methods for the remediation of heavily contaminated thermostatic mixing valves and water systems with Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm: considerations for new and existing healthcare water systems.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading cause of nosocomial Gram-negative bacteraemia. Water systems are a well-documented source of P. aeruginosa and established biofilms are difficult to remove. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of regular flushing, peracetic acid disinfection, in-tap thermal disinfection, and in-line thermal disinfection to eradicate P. aeruginosa biofilm in a colonized tap model. METHODS: A simulated tap system was constructed and inoculated with a reference and an environmental strain of P. aeruginosa to form biofilm. Water samples were collected from the taps and P…

Biocidal and Sporicidal Efficacy of Pathoster(®) 0.35% and Pathoster(®) 0.50% Against Bacterial Agents in Potential Bioterrorism Use.

The use of products that can neutralize or significantly reduce the microbial load and that are not harmful to human health and the environment represents a milestone in the fight against the spread of infectious diseases. Peracetic acid, besides being an excellent sterilizing and sporicidal agent, is harmless to humans and the environment when it is used in a common dosage. However, the high costs and loss of efficacy of the product very quickly after its reconstitution limit its use. We evaluated the efficacy and stability of 2 commercial products, based on stabilized peracetic acid (Pathost…

Effective of different industrial disinfection in subzero cold-chain environment.

Effective disinfection methods are crucial in the cold chain transportation process of food due to the specificity of temperature and the diversity of contaminated flora. The objective of this study was to investigate the sanitizing effect of different disinfectants on various fungi at - 20 °C to achieve accurate disinfection of diverse bacterial populations. Peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and potassium bisulfate were selected as low-temperature disinfectants and were combined with antifreeze. The sanitizing effect of these cryogenic disinfectants on pathogens such as Bacillus subtilis bla…

The morphology of acinar cells during acute pancreatitis in rats induced by intraductal infusion of peracetate.

Many experimental models have been created to explain the pathophysiology of acute pancreatitis (AP). Investigations have been undertaken in this laboratory into the influence of strong oxidants introduced into the pancreas retrogradely through the bile-pancreatic duct. In these experiments a potentially toxic metabolite of ethanol-peracetic acid was used to induce AP. Wistar rats were treated with 1 mM and 40 mM peracetate and with a solvent as a control for 1 and 3 hours respectively. After a period of observation the samples of pancreata were examined in a light and electron microscope toge…

[Behavioral response of cows after intrauterine application of disinfectants for treatment of endometritis].

Seventy-five animals were investigated in an attempt to study the chronological process of response to vaginal irritation by application of disinfectants for endometritis therapy. Aqueous peracetic acid solutions and Lugol solution were used. Cows reacted to intrauterine application of disinfectant drugs with tail lifting, pressing and sometimes groaning as expression of pain. We tried to quantify this response by registration of these different signs longer than two hours after treatment. The responses are caused by reflux of solution from the uterus into the vagina. They were different and d…

Effect of Delignification Process on the Properties of Barley-Straw Pulp and Paper.

Barley straw represents an underutilized agricultural residue with potential as a supplementary source of papermaking fibers. This study compared nitrate-alkaline, soda, and peracetic-acid delignification processes for the preparation of pulp from barley straw and evaluated the resulting laboratory paper sheets. The raw material was characterized by a cellulose content of 35.84%, an acid-insoluble lignin content of 18.79%, and ash content of 7.65%. Seven pulping variants were assessed in terms of total yield, reject content, Schöpper-Riegler degree, and Kappa number, while the paper sheets wer

Solvent removal and spore inactivation directly in dispensing vials with supercritical carbon dioxide and sterilant.

A process is described using supercritical carbon dioxide to extract organic solvents from drug solutions contained in 30-mL serum vials. We report drying times of less than 1 h with quantitative recovery of sterile drug. A six-log reduction of three spore types used as biological indicators is achieved with direct addition of peracetic acid to a final concentration of approximately 5 mM (~0.04 %) to the drug solution in the vial. Analysis of two drugs, acetaminophen and paclitaxel, indicated no drug degradation as a result of the treatment. Furthermore, analysis of the processed drug substanc…

Comparative genomics and chemical inactivation analysis of three Limosilactobacillus fermentum phages.

Phage infections threaten the food fermentation industry by degrading product quality and causing fermentation failure. This study compared the genomes and tolerance to chemical disinfectants (ethanol, isopropanol, sodium hypochlorite, and peracetic acid) of Limosilactobacillus (L.) fermentum phages LFP01, LFP02, and LFP03. Intact prophage regions were identified in the genomes of all three phage host strains. Furthermore, the phages were able to infect lysogenic host strains. LFP01 and LFP03 were closely related, whereas LFP02 represented a distinct lineage, suggesting genomic diversity among…
