A Rare Case of Cerebral Abscess due to Fusobacterium nucleatum with Native Aortic Valve Infective Endocarditis and Pyogenic Liver Abscess.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a commensal pathogen typically found in the oral cavity, digestive tract, and urogenital system which has been associated with Lemierre's syndrome, periodontal diseases, sinusitis, endocarditis, and intra-abdominal and brain abscesses. Our case is of a 62-year-old male who presented with headaches, nausea, and vision loss. Brain imaging identified a right occipito-parietal brain abscess. Following surgery and abscess drainage, Fusobacterium nucleatum was isolated from intraoperative cultures, and the infectious disease service was consulted for antibiotic recommendat

Pelvic infection caused by periodontitis: A case report.

Oral bacteria in patients with periodontitis can disseminate into the bloodstream via broken oral epithelial cells, causing odontogenic maxillofacial infections, brain abscesses and endocarditis. However, pelvic infection caused by periodontitis is rare. The case of a 48-year-old woman with a long history of recurrent periodontal infections, who complained of abdominal distention and pain for 14 days after dental implantation, is reported here. Pelvic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging signaled multiple inflammatory encapsulated effusions in the posterior uterus, which were removed by l

Liver abscess of Actinomyces israelii in a hemodialysis patient: case report and review of the literature.

We had encountered a 74-year-old woman on hemodialysis therapy suffering from liver abscess of Actinomyces israelii. Percutaneous drainage of the abscess before starting antimicrobial therapy followed by correct microbiological identification and susceptibility test led us to determine long treatment with ampicillin and to a successful outcome. Periodontitis was thought to be a possible entry of actinomyces. Hepatic actinomycosis should be recognized as one of the important infectious diseases among patients of end-stage renal disease.

Update on human cytomegalovirus in destructive periodontal disease.

AIM: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a herpesvirus, is discussed in this review as it relates to destructive periodontal disease in humans. RESULTS: HCMV genomic sequences, detected by polymerase chain reaction identification, occur with elevated frequency in severe adult periodontitis, localized and generalized aggressive (juvenile) periodontitis, Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome periodontitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, and periodontal abscesses. DISCUSSION: Herpesviruses establish lifelong persistent infections. HCMV infection involves an asymptomatic latent phase interrupted by peri…

Isolation and identification of Enterococcus faecalis from necrotic root canals using multiplex PCR.

This study was designed to survey the incidence of Enterococcus faecalis infection in symptomatic and asymptomatic root canals of necrotic teeth using PCR and to isolate the bacterium for further screening. Sixty patients categorized according to their clinical symptoms were used for sampling by insertion of paper points into the root canals and absorbing all the fluids present within them. The samples were incubated in 1.0 ml 2xYT (containing 16 g bacto tryptone, 10 g yeast extract and 5.0 g NaCl per liter) for 24 h at 37 degrees C without aeration prior to multiplex PCR analysis. The tender tooth. Dentoalveolar, pericoronal, and periodontal infections.

Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common afflictions of the tooth. These infectious diseases cause considerable pain and discomfort and ultimately loss of the tooth. Apart from local effects, these infections may extend beyond natural barriers and result in complications that can vary in severity from the excruciating pain of acute pulpitis to life-threatening infections of the deep fascial spaces of the head and neck. In this article, the clinical and pathologic features of dental caries, pulpitis, periapical abscess, pericoronitis, and periodontal infections are discussed as

[Pathogen spectrum and resistance status of exclusively anaerobic odontogenic infections].

Out of 440 dentogenic pyogenic infections, 171 exclusively caused by anaerobes were investigated to understand the importance of anaerobic bacteria in dental pyogenic processes better. Grampositive anaerobic bacteria dominated. The predominant grampositive isolates in monoinfections were Peptostreptococci and in the case of mixed infections, strains of the genus Eubacterium. Strains of Prevotella and Porphyromonas dominated the gramnegative anaerobic spectra. The resistance to penicillin was very low. Altogether, only one strain of Prevotella oris and one strain of Prevotella oralis showed res

[Systemic infections of dental origin].

Microorganisms harbored in the oral cavity have long been recognized to cause systemic disease with a well known mechanism of spread via the blood stream. Different factors, including the presence of periodontal disease, the number of dental extractions or the duration of dental surgery have an influence on the risk of bacteremia. Infectious endocarditis is classically cited, but there are other potential problems including brain abscess, meningitis, lung or lie abscess, and even for some authors, a risk of thrombotic heart disease. It is important to keep in mind that some of these focal infe

Lung abscess caused by the anaerobic pathogen Tannerella forsythia.

Odontogenic infections can spread to the respiratory tract. Despite the known role of Tannerella forsythia as the primary pathogen in periodontitis, the association between T. forsythia infection and risk of pneumonia or lung abscess remains unknown. In this report, we present a case of lung abscess caused by T. forsythia infection. The pathogen was detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of the patient. The clinical characteristics and possible mechanisms of the infection are discussed. T. forsythia is a conditional pathogen that can cause

Ruptured intraventricular brain abscesses due to Fusobacterium nucleatum with obstructive hydrocephalus: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium spp. are strictly anaerobic microorganisms and normal flora of the oropharyngeal, gastrointestinal, and female genital tracts. It is commonly associated with periodontal disease, pharyngitis, mastoiditis, and tonsillitis, with a tendency to abscess formation. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report a case of brain abscesses complicated by ventriculitis and obstructive hydrocephalus caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum of suspected odontogenic source. While repeated bacterial cultures remained negative, the isolate was identified using bacterial sequencing. LESSONS: Empirical

Dental sepsis.

Dental sepsis or periapical abscess formation constitutes a large percentage of dental conditions that afflict horses. Dental sepsis occurs when the pulp chamber of the tooth is exposed to the oral cavity or external environment, allowing bacterial localization with resulting infection. Although acute, primary, septic pulpitis in horses is rare, dental sepsis often results from colonization of the pulp chamber with pathogenic bacteria secondary to maleruption or impaction of teeth with secondary alveolar bone lysis, primary fractures of the tooth, mandible, or maxilla, periodontal disease, or

Oropharyngeal Necrobacillosis with Septic Thrombophlebitis and Pulmonary Embolic Abscesses: Lemierre's Syndrome in a New Zealand White Rabbit.

Lemierre's syndrome, oropharyngeal infections induced by anaerobic bacteria, leading to fatal septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and pulmonary embolic abscesses in humans, was diagnosed in a 6-month-old, male, New Zealand White rabbit. After acute onset of anorexia, lethargy, and depression, the rabbit died suddenly despite emergency clinical care. Necropsy revealed swelling, necrosis, and abscess in the soft tissues around the left caudal mandibular ramus, oral mucosa, and molar teeth, with systemic embolic abscesses and necrosis, especially in the jugular vein, lungs, and b
