A method is described to produce radiographs of thin sections of human teeth and periodontal structures. These high resolution contact x-rays allow for visualization of the microscopic details of the mineralized components of these tissues in a dimension heretofore not examined. AIMS: Women using hormonal contraceptives can be considered to be a 'risk group' for periodontal disease, due to prolonged, sustained serum levels of oestrogens and progesterone. This investigation aims to study the effects of hormonal contraceptives on periodontal tissues.

Data of examinations of the periodontium during chronic inflammations are analyzed. Immunohistochemical studies revealed that the connective-tissue cicatrix forming in the course of reparative regeneration of the periodontium is immature and incapable of performing mechanical functions. BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease results from the pathogenic interactions between the tissue, immune system, and microbiota; however, standard therapy fails to address the cellular mechanism underlying the chronic inflammation. Dendritic cells (DC) are key regulators of T cell fate, and biomaterials that recruit and program DC locally can direct T cell effector responses. We hypothesized that a biomaterial that recruited and programmed DC toward a tolerogenic phenotype could enrich regulatory T cells within periodontal tissue, with the eventual goal of attenuating T cell mediated pathology.
