The occurrence of tuberculosis (TB) is exceedingly rare in the United States (US), and incidence has steadily declined since 1993, but the pace of decline has slowed in recent years. The US TB rate during 2019 declined to 2.7 cases per 100,000 persons, the lowest level on record. The abdominal form is the sixth leading cause of extrapulmonary TB, after lymphatic, genitourinary, osteoarticular, miliary, and meningeal. Abdominal TB can infect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, including the peritoneum and the pancreaticobiliary system. We present a case of persistently elevated adenosine de

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) in a normal person, although possible, is often difficult to make because of its non-specific symptoms and signs. However, establishing a diagnosis of TBP in a patient with cerebral palsy (CP) does not seem to be possible due to impaired mental development accompanied by communication problems.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 19-year-old spastic man diagnosed with CP presented with fever and a nonverbal complaint of abdominal pain. The conditions were hard to evaluate due to his mental status. Abdominal radiography showed dilatation of both sma

Tuberculous peritonitis is an uncommon extrapulmonary form of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, frequently presenting with nonspecific and insidious symptoms. Diagnosis is therefore difficult, unsuspected, and often delayed, especially in the pediatric patient without an obvious history of exposure to the pathogen. This report presents a 9-year-old Hispanic girl and a 3-year-old African American boy presenting with nonspecific and insidious symptoms, such as abdominal pain, distention, and fever in whom computed tomography findings of peritoneal thickening and enhancement, high density asc

Both of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis and tuberculous peritonitis are now rather rare in parallel with the decrease of the incidence of tuberculosis as a whole. Here, we report a case of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis complicated with tuberculous peritonitis. A 28-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with pulmonary tuberculosis. Antituberculous chemotherapy was started and his chest X-ray findings were improved. After 11 weeks of the treatment, high fever of 39.0 degrees C developed suddenly and he complained right lower abdominal pain. During laparotomy performed on suspicio

BACKGROUND: Differential diagnosis between tuberculous peritonitis and peritoneal carcinomatosis remains challenging in clinical practice; thus, in-patients diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis or peritoneal carcinomatosis were retrospectively enrolled, and diagnostic values of ascitic tumor markers and adenosine deaminase were determined.
METHODS: Consecutive patients diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis or peritoneal carcinomatosis were retrospectively enrolled. The pertinent data of 169 patients enrolled were collected.
RESULTS: A panel of ascitic tumor makers (CEA, CA15-3, CA19-9) ha

BACKGROUND: Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgery for the management of tuberculous hydrocephalus. There is decreased clarity on issues regarding the indication as well as timing of cerebrospinal fluid diversion procedures in tuberculous meningitis. We systematically analysed published literature on this subject with an objective to assess the value of cerebrospinal fluid diversion procedures in tuberculous meningitis.
METHODS: A systematic search of literature was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (C

The aim of this study was to review the clinical features of tuberculous (TB) lymphadenitis in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Nine cases of TB lymphadenitis were diagnosed among 910 patients over a period of 10 years. There were five men and four women with a mean age of 51 +/- 15.5 years. The TB lymphadenitis involved the cervical lymph nodes in six patients, supraclavicular lymph nodes in two patients and mediastinal lymph nodes in one patient. Six patients presented with clinically enlarged lymph nodes of whom four also had fever. Three other patients

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of interferon-gamma release assays combined with multiple indicators for tuberculous peritonitis.
METHODS: Patients who were admitted to the hospital due to suspected tuberculous peritonitis were prospectively included during the 30-month study period. Moreover, healthy individuals were recruited and included in the control group. All the study participants were assessed using various indexes, such as interferon-gamma release assays.
RESULTS: A total of 180 patients with suspected tuberculous peritonitis were enrolled, and 24 were excluded. 73 p

A 65-year-old male patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis was diagnosed with Mycobacterium tuberculosis-related peritonitis. Initial diagnostic tests, including acid-fast smear of ascites, GeneXpert test, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture, yielded negative results. However, metagenomic capture sequencing (metaCAP) and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) identified the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The patient was subsequently treated with standard anti-tuberculosis therapy, leading to clinical improvement. This case highlights the utility of advanced molecular diagnost

Delayed diagnosis of female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) can lead to inappropriate treatment and unnecessary surgical procedures rather than standard anti-TB medication. We tried to evaluate the use of computed tomography (CT) imaging to differentiate TB peritonitis from peritoneal carcinomatosis of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC). We investigated women who underwent CT to distinguish between TB peritonitis and peritoneal carcinomatosis of AEOC. We evaluated various CT imaging features to identify differences between the two diseases. In addition, we performed univariate and multivari

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous peritonitis often presents with nonspecific symptoms that can lead to diagnostic challenges, particularly when manifesting as peritoneal pseudocysts. This study highlights the clinical complexity and diagnostic approach of tuberculous peritonitis presented as a pseudocyst in an immunocompetent adult, an atypical scenario that is rarely documented.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a detailed case of a 41-year-old man presenting with abdominal distension, pain, and significant weight loss over four months. Abdominal CT showed a peritoneal pseudocyst, initially misdiagnosed d

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous peritonitis is the most common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis infection in peritoneal dialysis patients. However, diagnosing tuberculous peritonitis quickly and early has always been a challenge for nephrologists. Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen-specific gamma interferon enzyme-linked immunospot (IFN-γ ELISPOT) assay has been widely used in the clinical diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy and peritonitis, but its use has not been reported for uremia.
METHODS: This study mainly verified the feasibility of using the M. tuberculosis antigen-specific IFN-γ ELISPOT as

PURPOSE: We aimed to differentiate tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) from peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) using a visual positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scoring system based on mesenteric fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake.
METHODS: PET/CT scans from 31 patients with TBP and 92 patients with PC were retrospectively reviewed. A visual PET/CT scoring system for mesenteric FDG uptake was used according to the following characteristics: FDG uptake intensity (low = 0, moderate = 1, high = 2), FDG uptake deposits (uniform = 0, irregular = 1, ascitic = 2), FDG uptake focality (diff

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) is a rare but severe complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, often presenting with non-specific symptoms. Its diagnosis is particularly challenging in patients with pre-existing or co-existing peritoneal pathology, such as changes suggestive of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old male on PD for 14 years with no prior history of peritonitis presented with recurrent abdominal pain, fever, and cloudy effluent, following a recent episode of Staphylococcus caprae peritonitis. Initial contrast-enhanced compu

A 40-year-old woman on peritoneal dialysis for 3 years presented with febrile peritonitis. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) confirmed Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in ascitic fluid, leading to prompt anti-tuberculosis therapy. She initially improved but developed ultrafiltration failure 15 months later and transitioned to hemodialysis. At 18 months, she developed bowel obstruction, bloody ascites, and characteristic imaging and laparoscopic findings of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS). Despite supportive care, she deteriorated and died 30 months after tuberculosis per

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) is uncommon in Japan, and its diagnosis with conventional methods is time taking and requires a high clinical index of suspicion. Laparoscopy with peritoneal biopsy is a tool for rapid and accurate diagnosis of TBP. However, few cases have mentioned the infectious control and prevention during the perioperative period. This case is written following the SCARE scale for case report writing.

A 53-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to abdominal pain, diarrhea, and shunt occlusion caused by dehydration. She had undergone hemodialysis due to diabetic nephropathy over a ten-year period. She was hospitalized again with fever and a persistent high serum CRP level. We started antibiotic administration using cefotiam hexetil hydrochloride because of ascites and peritoneum thickening observed by abdominal computed tomography. Although her symptoms, such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, improved after the administration of antibiotics, the ascites and the peritoneum thickening d

After complaining of right hypochondrial pain, a 36-year old man was diagnosed as having a gastric submucosal tumor at a nearby hospital and admitted to Chiba Cancer Center Hospital. On admission, a hard and immobile mass was palpable on the right upper quadrant. Laboratory findings were within normal limits. A chest X-ray revealed bilateral pleural adhesions and streaking shadows in the bilateral lung area. These findings were assumed to be due to a prior tuberculous infection. Upper gastrointestinal series and endoscopic examination showed a protruding lesion on the stomach body. An abdomina
