Attachment, Mentalization, and Criterion B of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD).

BACKGROUND: The mentalization theory posits that interpersonal difficulties and maladaptive personality traits develop from an insecure attachment pattern with one's caregiver and corresponding deficits in mentalizing-the ability to understand others' and one's own mental states. Mentalizing deficits have been theorized as the basis for all psychopathology, with the paradigmatic case being Borderline Personality Disorder. Nevertheless, developments in the personality field indicate personality pathology is best represented dimensionally, and such a proposal was outlined by the Alternative DSM-

A next generation of the schema therapy model of personality pathology: A cross-cultural and international study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders are highly prevalent worldwide imposing substantial personal and social challenges. Schema Therapy is an effective psychotherapeutic approach for personality pathology and other complex characterological problems. New scientific insights prompted a re-evaluation of its theoretical underpinnings leading to a reformulated Schema Therapy theory. Furthermore, the assumed cross-cultural universality of the Schema Therapy model has not been tested. AIMS: This project has two primary aims: (1) To develop revised instruments based on the reformulated theory that are

How Does the Media Represent Women and Voluntary Assisted Dying? Lexical and Thematic Analyses of Media Accounts.

Background: There is a limited understanding of how the media represents women and voluntary assisted dying. Given the media can shape public perceptions, this potentially contributes to health care inequities among women. Objectives: To analyze media accounts of women and voluntary assisted dying. Design: Guided by agenda-setting theory, lexical and thematic analyses were conducted of 163 media articles about women and voluntary assisted dying. Setting: The media articles were published in Australian and New Zealand publications, given the introduction of voluntary assisted dying in these nat

Dissociative Multiplicity and Psychoanalysis.

This paper examines the relationship between psychoanalysis and trauma, focusing specifically on dissociation-and, more narrowly, on dissociative multiplicity, the most challenging form for psychoanalysis to address. Dissociative multiplicity involves the presence of more than one center of consciousness, more than one "I," a feature of multiple personality, now called Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID, and OSDD-1, or subthreshold DID. The central question is whether classic psychoanalytic constructs, such as splitting, repression, various triadic views (oedipal, topographic, structural, F

The longitudinal relationships of interpersonal openness trait, hostility, and hostile attribution bias.

While the relationship between personality, hostility, and hostile attribution bias (HAB) has been explored in previous studies, their longitudinal relationship is unclear, and no related study has utilized the indigenous Chinese personality. This research explored the longitudinal relationships of interpersonal openness (IO; an indigenous Chinese personality construct), hostility, and HAB. The 942 valid participants (38.5% male, mean age = 20.83, standard deviation =  1.04) were from six different provinces in China. Measurements were completed on two separate occasions (Times 1 and 2), with

Young children's representations of conflict and distress: a longitudinal study of boys and girls with disruptive behavior problems.

We investigated narratives, symbolic play, and emotions in children who varied in severity of disruptive behavior problems. Children's representations of hypothetical situations of conflict and distress were assessed at 4-5 and 7 years. Behavior problems also were assessed then and again at 9 years. Children's aggressive and caring themes differentiated nonproblem children, children whose problems remained or worsened with age, and those whose problems improved over time. Differences in boys and girls whose problems continued sometimes reflected exaggerations of prototypic gender differences s

A new computerised advanced theory of mind measure for children with Asperger syndrome: the ATOMIC.

This study examined the ability of children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) to attribute mental states to characters in a new computerised, advanced theory of mind measure: The Animated Theory of Mind Inventory for Children (ATOMIC). Results showed that children with AS matched on IQ, verbal comprehension, age and gender performed equivalently on central coherence questions, but more poorly on the theory of mind questions compared with controls. A significant relationship was found between performance on ATOMIC and accuracy of mental state explanations provided on (Happé's, Journal of Autism and D

The precuneus and hippocampus contribute to individual differences in the unfolding of spatial representations during episodic autobiographical memory.

Spatial information is a central aspect of episodic autobiographical memory (EAM). Space-based theories of memory, including cognitive map and scene construction models, posit that spatial reinstatement is a required process during early event recall. Spatial information can be represented from both allocentric (third-person) and egocentric (first-person) perspectives during EAM, with egocentric perspectives being important for mental imagery and supported by the precuneus. Individuals differ in their tendency to rely on allocentric or egocentric information, and in general, the subjective exp

The Caring Life Course Theory: Opening new frontiers in care-A cardiac rehabilitation example.

AIM(S): To operationalize the Caring Life Course Theory (CLCT) as a framework for improving cardiac rehabilitation (CR) engagement and informing ways to address disparities in rural, low socio-economic areas. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data collected from 15 CR programmes to identify CR patterns through the CLCT lens using a mixed-methods approach. All analytical processes were conducted in NVivo, coding qualitative data through thematic analysis based on CLCT constructs. Relationships among these constructs were quantitatively assessed using Jaccard coefficients and hierarchical cluste

Psychometric Evaluation and Refinement of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Self Report: Development of the LPFS-SR Short-Forms.

The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) provides a dimensional framework for assessing personality dysfunction, and the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Self Report (LPFS-SR) is a widely used instrument for evaluating the construct. However, its psychometric properties and practical feasibility remain areas of concern due to its extensive item length and structural misspecification. A sample of 344 participants was recruited to assess the psychometric properties of the LPFS-SR using bifactor modeling and item response theory (IRT) analyses. We replicated general fact

Leary's circle matrix: a comprehensive model for the statistical measurement of Horney's clinical concepts.

Three issues associated with the lack of statistical evaluation of Horney's theory were presented. They are the preference for professional and clinical impression over the use of more objective methods for defining and evaluating behaviors; the difficulty involved in validly assessing the dysfunctional nature of the expansive type; and the disregard of many objective scales for intrapsychic processes that should be viewed in terms of the total "organization of personality." Leary's model was described as a systematic and formal set of procedures that are relevant and appropriate to the measur

[Validation by Rasch analysis of the Mania Scale (EMUN) for measuring manic symptions].

INTRODUCTION: The Mania Scale (EMUN) developed at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia was designed to measure the severity of manic symptoms, but has been validated only using classical psychometric theory. OBJECTIVES: The psychometric properties and measuring characteristics of the EMUN scale were determined using an analysis based on item response theory. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred sixty-four patients with manic, hypomanic or mixed episode symptoms were assessed using the EMUN scale. The psychometric characteristics of the scale were analyzed using a Rasch model for partial credit

Using context to treat traumatized children.

When treating childhood psychic trauma, context means "putting a perspective to the terrifying experience"--"seeing it in a new light", one might say, or understanding its magnitude and meaning. Of three essential mechanisms behind a young person's psychological recovery from a stress disorder--abreaction, context, and correction-context is the most reflective, cognitive, and conscious of these processes; while abreaction is primarily emotive, and correction is primarily behavioral (involving real or fantasied action). Because context, newly introduced by this author to the psychiatric literat

Smoking cessation in smoke-free prisons: a grounded theory study.

Purpose Prisoners are vulnerable to tobacco addiction and have a smoking prevalence significantly higher than that of the general community. The context of this study was the implementation of a "smoke-free prisons" policy, which imposed forced smoking cessation onto the Queensland, Australian prison population. The study asked the question: "What are the psychosocial processes in which male prisoners engage during smoking cessation in a smoke-free environment?" Design/methodology/approach Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 prisoners in South-east Queensland smoke-free correctional

Varying language register according to listener needs in speakers with autism spectrum disorder.

The ability to adjust language register, or style, according to listener needs was assessed in 38 high-functioning children and adolescents with ASD. Participants were asked to explain the process of going to a restaurant to a series of listeners who varied in linguistic competence. Results showed that participants with ASD spontaneously simplified their language based on a listener's appearance and a brief introduction, but were not as adept at that adjustment as matched controls. Further stylistic adjustments were produced following increasingly specific prompts.

A state of double jeopardy: impact of prenatal alcohol exposure and adverse environments on the social communicative abilities of school-age children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE: This article is a retrospective examination of environmental risk, language performance, and narrative discourse data from a clinical database of school-age children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). METHOD: A case-defined diagnostic approach for measuring and reporting the full spectrum of disabilities in children with prenatal alcohol exposure is presented. Demographic, environmental, language, and social communication (as reflected by narrative discourse) data are reported for a large cohort of children with FASD between the ages of 6;0 (years;months) and 12;0. When victims don't cry: children's understandings of victimization, compliance, and subversion.

How do children understand situations in which the targets of moral transgressions do not complain about the way they are treated? One-hundred and twenty participants aged 5, 7, 10, 13, and 16 years were interviewed about hypothetical situations in which one child ("transgressor") made an apparently unfair demand of another child ("victim"), who then responded by either resisting, complying, or subverting. In general, 5-year-olds judged compliance positively and resistance negatively and 7- to 16-year-olds judged resistance positively and compliance negatively; all but 16-year-olds judged subv

Improving Long-Term Adherence to Endocrine Therapy Among Breast Cancer Survivors: Development of a Multiscale Modeling and Intervention System.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a significant public health burden. Despite its critical role in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer, rates of long-term adherence to endocrine therapy (ET) remain low among certain breast cancer survivors. Using embedded sensors in smartphones and wearables, ecological momentary assessment data and health behavior theory may facilitate a richer understanding of the real-world context of medication-taking behaviors, which can aid in the development of personalized interventions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to describe the development of a mult

The Dark Side of Humanity Scale: A reconstruction of the Dark Tetrad constructs.

There has been an absence of consideration regarding measurement invariance across males and females in the widely available Dark Tetrad (DT) scales which measure psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism and everyday sadism. This has resulted in criticisms of the measures, suggesting that the assessed constructs are not wholly relatable between the groups. This article documents the construction and validation of the Dark Side of Humanity Scale (DSHS), which measures dark personalities from an alternative viewpoint, determined by the constructs as they emerged from the male and female data, w

Self-disorder explained: Yasunaga's "Phantom Space Theory" on schizophrenia.

The present article revisits the theoretical model of schizophrenia by Hiroshi YASUNAGA (1929-2011). Yasunaga restated ego disturbance in schizophrenia as the "Pattern Reversal" between selfhood and otherness, based on British philosopher Wauchope's concept of "pattern." This concept is meant as asymmetrical relatedness (A/B) within a pair of concepts, such as life and death, quality and quantity, and self and other, prioritizing the former (A side) over the latter (B side). When applied to the pair of self and other, the pattern is vital for human experiences, and its disruption fundamentally
