Mapping Emotion Regulation Patterns Within the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders Personality Traits.

Personality pathology is associated with emotional problems that are potentially attributable to problematic emotion regulation strategy patterns. We evaluated the emotion regulation strategies associated with the pathological personality traits in the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). A total of 504 participants completed measures of AMPD traits and strategy usage, which were analyzed using hierarchical regressions and latent profile analysis (LPA). Regression results demonstrated that each trait was associated with a unique strategy pattern: negative affect with emotional ov

Is Personality Pathology Ego-Syntonic? Self- and Meta-Perception of Maladaptive Personality Traits.

Research has challenged the assumption that personality pathology is "ego-syntonic" or perceived favorably and consistent with one's self-image. The present study employed a community sample (n = 401) to examine relations between self-rated maladaptive personality and liking of maladaptive traits in self and others as well as meta-perception of personality pathology (i.e., how likable participants believe others find maladaptive traits). In general, individuals with higher self-rated maladaptive traits provided higher ratings of the likability of these traits in themselves and others. However,

Personality and substance use disorder: Characteristics as measured by NEO-personality inventory-revised.

The present study investigates the personality characteristics of a cohort of patients with Substance Use Disorders. The included participants (n = 123) were recruited from specialized treatment for addictions in Norway. The personality scores in the current sample were compared to the Norwegian norm sample with t-tests. Age and gender differences in personality scores were assessed by bivariate correlation analyses and t-tests, respectively. The sample had higher scores on Neuroticism and lower scores on Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Extraversion, and Openness compared to the norm sample

State effects of major depression on the assessment of personality and personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether personality disorders diagnosed during a depressive episode have long-term outcomes more typical of those of other patients with personality disorders or those of patients with noncomorbid major depression. METHOD: The authors used 6-year outcome data collected from the multisite Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS). Diagnoses and personality measures gathered from the study cohort at the index assessment using interview and self-report methods were associated with symptomatic, functional, and personality measures at

Personality disorder traits, maladaptive schemas, modes and coping styles in participants with complex dissociative disorders, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The schema mode model offers a new conceptualisation of complex dissociative disorders (CDD) as it explains shifts between identities as shifts between schema modes. Furthermore, in this model CDD is conceived as personality pathology, incorporating core features of personality disorders. This study tested the assumptions of this schema mode model of CDD. METHOD: Questionnaires measuring personality disorder traits, schemas, schema modes and coping styles were filled out by patients with CDD, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder (N = 210), and their sco

Personality Disorders: A preface.

Personality disorders (PDs) are complex psychiatric conditions marked by persistent maladaptive patterns of cognition, emotion, and behaviour. This Special Issue of Neuropharmacology compiles cutting-edge research and reviews exploring the neurobiological, psychological, and therapeutic dimensions of PDs. Contributions span diverse topics, including neurobiological mechanisms, hypothesis for novel treatments, gene-environment interactions, and immune-metabolic influences. Key findings include the role of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) in aggression in borderline personality disorder (BPD),

[ADHD and personality disorders].

ADHD and personality disorders, like emotional unstable personality disorder and dissocial personality disorder, overlap to some extent but they also commonly co-occur in clinical populations. Prevalences, key issues in differential diagnosis, and the different aetiological background of the two categories are presented in this review. In depth, clinical diagnostic evaluation of both disorder syndromes, not only based on use of questionnaires, is needed to sufficiently distinct the separate main categories. In case of co-occurrence treatment, recommendations of both disorders and social suppor

Alexithymia and Personality Pathology.

Alexithymia is an important transdiagnostic risk factor for many psychopathologies. To explore its relevance for personality disorders, we examined the association between alexithymia and maladaptive personality traits, as conceptualized within the DSM-5-TR Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (i.e., negative affect, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition, psychoticism). Participants (N = 651) completed a battery of psychometric questionnaires. Regressions revealed that alexithymia facets accounted for a significant 15% of the variance in negative affect, 22% in detachment, 11% in antago

Sadism and Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sadistic pleasure-the enjoyment of harm-infliction to others-can have devastating interpersonal and societal consequences. The goal of the current review is to illuminate the nomological net of traits related to sadism. We aim to achieve an understanding of the current empirical status on the link between sadism and personality disorders, psychopathy, the Dark Triad, and basic personality traits in clinical and community-based samples. RECENT FINDINGS: The field is dominated by self-report studies on the Dark Triad with convenience samples. The link with DSM personality dis

Detecting Idiographic Personality Change.

Personality changes across the lifespan, but strong evidence regarding the mechanisms responsible for personality change remains elusive. Studies of personality change and life events, for example, suggest that personality is difficult to change. But there are two key issues with assessing personality change. First, most change models optimize population-level, not individual-level, effects, which ignores heterogeneity in patterns of change. Second, optimizing change as mean-levels of self-reports fails to incorporate methods for assessing personality dynamics, such as using changes in varianc

Breastfeeding and Adult Personality.

Five Factor Model (FFM) personality traits are implicated in long-term health-risk behaviors and outcomes. Less research has addressed how early-life experiences are associated with individual differences in these traits in adulthood. We examine whether having been breastfed is associated with adult personality and well-being in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. At Wave 1, caregivers reported whether the target child had been breastfed. At Wave 4, participants (N=13,113; 53% female; Mage=28.98) completed measures of psychological functioning. We tested for mean-lev

Personality and fibromyalgia syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to review how personality characteristics contribute to the onset, maintenance or modulation of fibromyalgia. METHOD: The databases Medline and PsychINFO were examined from 1967 to 2012 to identify studies that investigated associations between fibromyalgia and personality. Search terms included fibromyalgia and personality, trait psychology, characteristics and individual differences. RESULTS: Numerous studies indicate that patients with fibromyalgia experience psychological distress. Various instruments have been used to evaluate distress and related psychological doma

[Depression and personality disorders].

The association between depressive disorders and personality disorders is frequent. They need to be acknowledged in general practice for a better treatment (therapeutic alliance, compliance). Twenty to 50% of psychiatric inpatients and 50 to 85% of outpatients with a major depressive episode also have an associated personality disorder, most frequently borderline, avoidant, dependent or obsessive. These associations, as well as the so-called depressive personality disorder, have many implications for other persistant mood disorders such as dysthymic disorders. This article discusses the therap

Personality and anxiety disorders.

Personality traits and most anxiety disorders are strongly related. In this article, we review existing evidence for ways in which personality traits may relate to anxiety disorders: 1) as predisposing factors, 2) as consequences, 3) as results of common etiologies, and 4) as pathoplastic factors. Based on current information, we conclude the following: 1) Personality traits such as high neuroticism, low extraversion, and personality disorder traits (particularly those from Cluster C) are at least markers of risk for certain anxiety disorders; 2) Remission from panic disorder is generally asso

[Anxious (avoidant) personality disorder].

The anxious (avoidant or fearful) type of personality disorder has a lifetime prevalence of 5%, which makes it the most common form of personality disorder. Although it is one of the leading risk factors for severe depressive illnesses, anxiety disorders, substance dependence, eating disorders and chronic pain, its importance is frequently underestimated. Ambulatory treatment comprises psychoeducation, self-management and training in social competence.

Toxoplasmosis, behaviour and personality.

The clinical sequelae of acute and congenital toxoplasmosis are well established, but that of chronic toxoplasma infection remains uncertain. In rodents, chronic toxoplasma infection is associated with altered behaviour leading to an enhanced risk of feline predation and a putative selective advantage to the parasite. It is proposed that neurotropic cysts of toxoplasma exert an effect on animal behaviour, either directly or via the release of metabolic products. Long-standing toxoplasma infection in humans has been linked to cerebral tumour formation and personality shift. In view of the vast

Multiple personality: self-rape.

Multiple personality disorder is the classification given a person for whom two or more distinct personalities are diagnosed. The personalities can be different and vary in character from aggressive to submissive (victimized). The victim alters can be abused and abuse or mutilate self to relieve anxiety or guilt (deserving punishment) or to exert control. Alters may provide a means of expressing anger or other feelings. Aggression towards the body may be sexually oriented, so one may ask whether aggression could make self-rape possible. If so, such expression of self-injuries may be observed i

Personality characteristics and epilepsy.

Patients with a long history of temporal lobe epilepsy or primary generalized epilepsy entered a questionnaire study of personality characteristics, based on a modification of the Bear-Fedio inventory for temporal lobe behavioural syndrome. Psoriasis patients and healthy volunteers served as controls. Four clinical meaningful dimensions of included personality traits were identified: ixoide, ideational, obsessive-compulsive and affective features. Analyses based on the Rasch model approved of all dimensions except for affective features. The epilepsy group obtained the highest scores on all 3
