Personalized assessment of craniosynostosis via statistical shape modeling.

We present a technique for the computational analysis of craniosynostosis from CT images. Our fully automatic methodology uses a statistical shape model to produce diagnostic features tailored to the anatomy of the subject. We propose a computational anatomy approach for measuring shape abnormality in terms of the closest case from a multi-atlas of normal cases. Although other authors have tackled malformation characterization for craniosynostosis in the past, our approach involves several novel contributions (automatic labeling of cranial regions via graph cuts, identification of the closest

A neuropsychological assessment of phobias in patients with stiff person syndrome.

A neuropsychological assessment was performed in 10 patients with stiff person syndrome (SPS) to determine whether their anxiety and phobic symptoms precede stiffness and spasms or represent a reaction to disability. No neurocognitive dysfunction was noted. Patients perceived fears and anxiety as realistic and caused by SPS rather than due to an inherent phobic neurosis.

Assessing the acceptability of behavioral treatments to persons with mental retardation.

Individuals with mild to moderate mental retardation living in community residential settings (Experiment 1) or an institutional setting (Experiment 2) rated the acceptability of differential reinforcement and time-out applied to a mild and a severe behavior problem. Using analogue methodology similar to previous treatment acceptability studies (e.g., Miltenberger, Lennox, & Erfanian, 1989; Tarnowski, Rasnake, Mulicke, & Kelly, 1989), and a simplified rating scale developed for persons with mental retardation, community-based subjects rated differential reinforcement as more acceptable than ti

Guidelines for assessment and intervention with persons with disabilities: An executive summary.

This article provides an executive summary of the American Psychological Association's (APA's) revised Guidelines for Assessment and Intervention With Persons With Disabilities. The revision was requested by the Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology and was approved by the APA Council of Representatives in February 2022. The task force updated and expanded the guidelines' empirical bases; squarely situated the guidelines in a changing sociocultural landscape (reflected in discussions of disability models, biases and barriers, language use, intersectionality, and respectful and fair asse

Personality disorders and forensic assessments: The benefits of ICD-11.

A recent landmark case in the Australian state of Victoria clarified the ways in which personality disorders may be taken into account when the courts are sentencing convicted offenders. The ruling especially emphasised: the need for evidence to be 'cogent'; the need to determine 'severity' of the personality disorder; the need to consider whether there is a 'connection to the offending'; the need for caution when diagnoses are based solely on behaviour; and the need to consider rehabilitative prospects and community protection. The ruling has significant implications for how forensic experts i

Assessment of dementia in a clinical sample of persons with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of age-associated disorders has become increasingly important. METHODS: In a clinical setting, people with intellectual disability with and without dementia were assessed retrospectively using the Neuropsychological Test Battery (NTB) and the Dementia Questionnaire for People with Learning Disabilities (DLD) at two different times to analyse neuropsychological changes and diagnostic validity. One group (n = 44) was assessed with both instruments, while the DLD was applied in 71 patients. RESULTS: In the NTB (n = 44), only patients with dementia (n = 26) showed a declin

Personalized risk assessment for dynamic transition of gastric neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: To develop an individually-tailored dynamic risk assessment model following a multistep, multifactorial process of the Correa's gastric cancer model. METHODS: First, we estimated the state-to-state transition rates following Correa's five-step carcinogenic model and assessed the effect of risk factors, including Helicobacter pylori infection, history of upper gastrointestinal disease, lifestyle, and dietary habits, on the step-by-step transition rates using data from a high-risk population in Matsu Islands, Taiwan. Second, we incorporated information on the gastric cancer carcinog

The final word on nutritional screening and assessment in older persons.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an updated perspective of how nutritional screening and assessment in older persons should be performed and reasonably implemented in the near future. RECENT FINDINGS: Although nutritional screening and assessment should be fast and easy procedures, there is increasing evidence that more time should be dedicated to them. This is probably an answer to the claim to a medicine being more preventive than curative. Increasing interest is currently given to healthy aging and nutritional status is more likely to be addressed for its implications on functional status and

[Errors and difficulties in the assessment of severely handicapped and blind persons].

The assessment of ophthalmological examination reports in social law is usually based on subjective statements by the petitioner made towards his ophthalmologist. Insufficient consideration of objective results as well as the limited experience of the officials in charge may lead to errors. An analysis of patients for consideration as legally blind in Baden, Germany, between 1980-1999, based upon 2,265 doubtful applications resulted in 33.3% false estimates by the patient's ophthalmologist. The reason, in the vast majority of cases, was misjudgment involving visual field defects or even missin

Assessment of upper extremity muscle function in persons with tetraplegia.

The objective was to investigate the actual level of muscle function impairment in tetraplegic persons and, inextricably related to this, the possibilities to compensate function loss using new muscle coalitions. In this cross-sectional group study, 20 persons with a cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) at segmental levels C5C6 or C7C8 and 10 control persons participated. Activity from 21 upper extremity and trunk muscles was recorded during standardised gross upper extremity task performance. No substantial differences in main activation patterns were found between C7C8 and control subjects. In

Assessing suicide risk in cluster C personality disorders.

The aim of the study was to assess suicide risk in psychiatric outpatients with specific cluster C personality disorders (avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive). A sample of 142 psychiatric outpatients was used for the study. The sample was composed of 87 outpatients meeting diagnostic criteria for a personality disorder and 53 psychiatric outpatients meeting criteria for an axis I disorder only. The results showed that dependent, but not avoidant or obsessive-compulsive, personality disorders, as well as the clusters A and B personality disorders, were significantly associated with su

Parental bonding and personality pathology assessed by clinician report.

The present study focused on the link between parental bonding and personality pathology. We developed a clinician-report version of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI; Parker, Tupling, and Brown, 1979), which 203 clinicians applied to a randomly selected patient in their care. The goal of the study was to examine the reliability and validity of a clinician-report PBI, and to provide a preliminary examination of the relation between personality disorder (PD) symptoms and parental bonding in a national sample of patients in treatment in the community. Factor analysis yielded two factors (pare

Cancer patients in pain: considerations for assessing the whole person.

Pain is a subjective perception that is influenced by psychosocial and behavioral factors and physical pathology. In cancer, the source of the pain may be the disease itself, the treatment, or co-occurring pain syndromes. Often, cancer is a progressive disease, and pain may be marked by exacerbations, additional treatment, and remissions. Thus, pain assessment must become part of routine care. Ratings of pain should be performed on a regular basis, just as vital signs are taken on a regular basis. Unlike the other vital signs, however, pain can only be assessed by the patients' verbal and nonv

Legal principles in the psychiatric assessment of personal injury litigants.

The authors review the legal principles that a psychiatrist must understand in assessing the emotional and psychiatric sequelae of a personal injury leading to a litigation claim. The principles of the establishment of fault or liability, the assessment of pain and suffering, causal connection, the credibility of the plaintiff, the credibility of the expert witness, the determination of prognosis, the award of damages, and the adversarial system are discussed. An appreciation of these principles will enable psychiatrists to provide assessments that will be useful to the legal system in arrivin
