Accidental crude oil spills to the marine environment cause dispersion of oil into the water column through the actions of breaking waves, a process that can be facilitated using chemical dispersants. Oil dispersions contain dispersed micron-sized oil droplets and dissolved oil components, and the toxicity of oil dispersions has been assumed to be associated primarily with the latter. However, most hydrophobic, bioaccumulative and toxic crude oil components are retained within the droplets which may interact with marine filter-feeders. We here summarize the findings of 15 years of research usi

Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) exhibited unprecedented juvenile recruitment in 2010 during the year of the Deepwater Horizon well blowout, exceeding the prior 39-year mean by more than four standard deviations near the Mississippi River. Abundance of that cohort remained exceptionally high for two subsequent years as recruits moved into older age classes. Such changes in this dominant forage fish population can be most parsimoniously explained as consequences of release from predation. Contact with crude oil induced high mortality of piscivorous seabirds, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops trun

Following exposure to weathered and non-weathered oil, lethal and sub-lethal impacts on red drum larvae were assessed using survival, morphological, and cardiotoxicity assays. The LC50 for red drum ranged from 14.6 (10.3-20.9) to 21.3 (19.1-23.8) μgl-1 ΣPAH with no effect of exposure timing during the pre-hatch window or oil weathering. Similarly, morphological deformities showed dose responses in the low ppb range. Cardiac output showed similar sensitivity resulting in a major 70% reduction after exposure to 2.6μgl-1 ΣPAH. This cardiac failure was driven by reduced stroke volume rather than b

After an oil spill, crude oil in the marine environment is affected by a variety of processes collectively called weathering. Photooxidation induced by ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun is one of the most significant processes of long-term weathering that changes the chemical nature of oil. Experimental studies on photooxidation in the natural environment are generally not practicable due to the variability of factors that are more readily controlled in a laboratory. The emission spectra and irradiance of artificial lamps are critical factors for simulating sunlight, and the process of accel

Contamination of the vadose zone with various pollutants is a world-wide problem, and often technical or economic constraints impose remediation without excavation. In situ bioremediation in the vadose zone by bioventing has become a standard remediation technology for light spilled petroleum products. In this review, focus is given on new in situ bioremediation strategies in the vadose zone targeting a variety of other pollutants such as perchlorate, nitrate, uranium, chromium, halogenated solvents, explosives and pesticides. The techniques for biostimulation of either oxidative or reductive

Pilot production and production studies using a biological method for treating and neutralizing toxic waste polluted with petroleum products at high concentrations (up to 30%) were conducted. The results have indicated that the use of oil degrading microorganisms is highly promising. Within the first vegetative period as high as 80% of petroleum products withdrew from waste and over 95% of those migrated into the aqueous medium. Purification decreased the content of mobile phases of metals to the values below the maximum allowable concentrations. The waste that is highly toxic for protozoa and

Soil polluted by oil and its derivatives is a critical environmental issue worldwide that jeopardizes ecological systems and causes geotechnical problems. This review paper focuses on the previous studies concerning the impacts of oil pollution on soil geotechnical properties. To this end, related academic literature on this topic was investigated and discussed. The findings of this study demonstrated that the addition of oil pollution in coarse-grained soils significantly reduces particle surface roughness. On the other hand, in fine-grained soils, it results in flocculation and secondary agg

Newark Bay, New Jersey, is particularly vulnerable to ecological damage from petroleum and chemical spills, as a result of the enclosed nature and shallow depth of the bay, the high frequency of shipping traffic, and the numerous chemical and petroleum transfer terminals located alongs its shores. To evaluate the potential impacts to the natural resources of this coastal estuarine ecosystem, chemical and petroleum accidents reported to the US Coast Guard (USCG) between 1982 and 1991 were compiled to determine the frequency and volume of these incidents in Newark Bay and in each of its major tr

Diesel oil is known to be one of the major petroleum products that can pollute water and soil. Soil pollution caused by petroleum hydrocarbons has substantially impacted the environment, especially in the Middle East. In this study, modeling and optimization of hexadecane removal from soil was performed using two pure cultures of Acinetobacter and Acromobacter and consortium culture of both bacterial species using artificial neural network (ANN) method. Then the best ANN structure was proposed based on mean square error (MSE) as well as correlation coefficient (R) for pure cultures of Acinetob

Petroleum hydrocarbons are highly toxic and carcinogenic substances that adversely affect ecosystems and human health. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of biochar and sodium humate treatments on phytotoxic indicators of soils contaminated with oil. The results show that Haplic Chernozem is more sensitive to remediation than Haplic Cambisol, as evidenced by a significantly greater reduction in the integral phytotoxicity index (IPT). Oil pollution in both Haplic Chernozem and Haplic Cambisol led to a decrease in radish root growth compared to the control group. Application of biochar at a

Ocean oil spills can severely impact ecosystems and disrupt marine biodiversity and habitats. Microbial remediation is an effective method for removing thin oil slick contamination. In this study, the adsorption and degradation of low-concentration oil spills by Chlorella vulgaris LH-1 immobilized in konjac glucomannan (KGM) aerogel were investigated. The effect of the KGM aerogel-immobilized C. vulgaris on the bacterial community structure in seawater environments was analyzed through bacterial diversity sequencing. In seawater containing 0.01 and 1.00 g/L of crude oil, after 14 days of remed

Oil seeps and spillage events can harm the environment in various ways. In the ocean, oil may form droplets or remain in the water column, becoming ingested by exposed species and potentially contaminating humans through seafood consumption. This study aimed to characterize and evaluate the toxicity of the water accommodated fraction (WAF) obtained from a solid soil-oil mass after the Brazilian oil spill of 2019 and its effects on enzymatic biomarkers in Artemia parthenogenetica. Cysts and nauplii were exposed to 100 %, 4 % and 0.16 % WAF for 48 h, with toxicological parameters and enzymatic a

Understanding oil spill behavior in estuarine and coastal systems requires knowledge of oil-mineral aggregate (OMA) formation, as this process significantly governs the transport of floating oil. Current understanding of OMA formation remains superficial, lacking in-depth analysis of underlying micromechanisms. Moreover, existing models rely solely on mineral concentration, resulting in limited applicability. In this study, the aggregation between moderately dispersed oil and various minerals was investigated through mesoscale simulation experiments conducted in a wave tank. Physicochemical an

Phytoremediation of crude oil-contaminated soil requires strategies to overcome plant stress and enhance microbial degradation. This study evaluated an integrated approach using Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) augmented with nutrients and a microbial consortium (MLSS). A 90-day pot experiment was conducted with soil contaminated with Bangistan crude oil (0.25-5% w/w). Treatments included unplanted control, planted control, and planted systems amended with NPK fertilizer and/or MLSS. The combined nutrient and MLSS amendment synergistically enhanced remediation. It achieved > 95% Total Petroleu

Accurate characterization of microbial communities in aquifers is essential for understanding groundwater ecosystem responses to petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. However, existing studies have focused primarily on groundwater, largely overlooking the coupled interactions between groundwater and aquifer sediments, which may bias aquifer-scale evaluations of microbial functional potential. In this study, contaminated groundwater and corresponding aquifer sediment samples were collected from a petroleum hydrocarbon impacted site, together with uncontaminated groundwater and sediment samples o

The release of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) into the environment is primarily linked to petroleum industry activities, including drilling, exploration, storage, and related processes. The spillage of PHCs into the environment poses significant threats to ecosystems and can lead to serious risks to human health, the environment, and plants. This research aims to investigate the phytotoxic effect of petroleum sludge on the germination and growth characteristics of Salicornia sinus-persica. This study was conducted in a greenhouse using pots to examine the effects of varying concentrations of PH

Marine ecosystems are increasingly exposed to petroleum pollutants and plastic waste, highlighting the importance of better understanding the microbial taxa that mediate hydrocarbon degradation. Here, we describe the genetic and metabolic toolbox of Alcanivoracaceae bacteria strains; Alcanivorax jadensis IL1, a candidate new species - Alcanivorax davidoviea IL2, and Alloalcanivorax venustensis A6, isolated from a petroleum-contaminated Eastern Mediterranean Sea marina. The three strains showed high metabolic capacities to utilize crude oil, linear and branched alkanes, but not mono- and polyar

Diluted bitumen (DB), one of the most transported unconventional crude oils in Canada's pipelines, raises public concerns due to its potential spillage into freshwater environments. This study aimed to compare the fate and behaviour of DB versus conventional crude (CC) in a simulated warm freshwater environment. An equivalent of 10 L of either DB or CC was spilled into 1200 L of North Saskatchewan River (NSR) water containing natural NSR sediment (2.4 kg) in a mesoscale spill tank and its fate and behaviour at air/water temperatures of 18 °C/24 °C were monitored for 56 days. Oil mass distribut
