Changes in refraction after cataract phacoemulsification surgery.

PURPOSE: After cataract phacoemulsification surgery, spherical equivalent refraction (SER) may be affected by factors including corneal curvature, effective lens position and axial length. While refractive outcomes have been assessed in the immediate post-operative period, longer-term changes in refraction have not been reported. The purpose of this study was to investigate the timeline changes in refraction after cataract surgery over a period of 3 years. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study that included 344 eyes of 204 patients who underwent cataract emulsification surgery

Intraocular metallic-appearing foreign bodies after phacoemulsification.

Intraocular metallic-appearing foreign bodies in the anterior segment were seen in six eyes after cataract extraction by two-handed phacoemulsification. These fragments produced no symptoms and had no clinically significant effect on visual function. Similar-appearing foreign bodies were experimentally produced by applying ultrasound power with a phacoemulsification handpiece to the surface of a cyclodialysis spatula in vitro. Microscopic examination of the phaco handpiece tip and cyclodialysis spatulas revealed numerous surface irregularities, suggesting a possible source of these fragments.

Corneal endothelial cells and acoustic cavitation in phacoemulsification.

Postoperative complications of phacoemulsification, such as corneal edema caused by human corneal endothelial cell (CEC) injury, are still a matter of concern. Although several factors are known to cause CEC damage, the influence of ultrasound on the formation of free radicals during surgery should be considered. Ultrasound in aqueous humor induces cavitation and promotes the formation of hydroxyl radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS-induced apoptosis and autophagy in phacoemulsification have been suggested to significantly promote CEC injury. CEC cannot regenerate after injury, and

Combined endocyclophotocoagulation and phacoemulsification in the management of moderate glaucoma.

Cataract and glaucoma are the leading causes of blindness worldwide and commonly coexist in elderly patients. Endocyclophotocoagulation is a minimally invasive approach for glaucoma management that is amenable to combination with cataract surgery. We review the literature on endocyclophotocoagulation and evaluate intraocular pressure reduction efficacy when combined with phacoemulsification. Several studies demonstrate that phacoemulsification and endocyclophotocoagulation successfully reduces intraocular pressure and decreases medication burden. Phacoemulsification and endocyclophotocoagulati

[Phacoemulsification of human lens nucleus with a water jet].

BACKGROUND: Today, phacoemulsification with ultrasound represents the gold standard in cataract surgery. Nevertheless, new technologies for this operation are being developed to reduce the loss of endothelial cells, the heating of the tissue, and the size of the accesses. In addition to bimanual phacoemulsification, laser phacoemulsification, and mechanic phacolysis, the waterjet is discussed as an alternative. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human soft and hard nuclei of the lens obtained by extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) were divided in the water bath with the waterjet, whereby the paramet
