Phonon self-energy and origin of anomalous neutron scattering spectra in SnTe and PbTe thermoelectrics.

The anharmonic lattice dynamics of rock-salt thermoelectric compounds SnTe and PbTe are investigated with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and first-principles calculations. The experiments show that, surprisingly, although SnTe is closer to the ferroelectric instability, phonon spectra in PbTe exhibit a more anharmonic character. This behavior is reproduced in first-principles calculations of the temperature-dependent phonon self-energy. Our simulations reveal how the nesting of phonon dispersions induces prominent features in the self-energy, which account for the measured INS spectra and

Bleustein-Gulyaev-Shimizu surface acoustic waves in two-dimensional piezoelectric phononic crystals.

In this paper, we present a study on the existence of Bleustein-Gulyaev-Shimizu piezoelectric surface acoustic waves in a two-dimensional piezoelectric phononic crystal (zinc oxide, ZnO, and cadmium-sulfide, CdS) using the plane wave expansion method. In the configuration of ZnO (100)/CdS(100) phononic crystal, the calculated results show that this type of surface waves has higher acoustic wave velocities, high electromechanical coupling coefficients, and larger band gap width than those of the Rayleigh surface waves and pseudosurface waves. In addition, we find that the folded modes of the Bl

Bound States in the Continuum for High-Q Light Emission in Photonic-Phononic Nonlocal Metasurfaces.

Thermal radiation is inherently broadband and incoherent, limiting its utility in applications requiring spectral selectivity such as molecular spectroscopy and free-space optical communications. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide a powerful route to confine light in open photonic systems and realize resonances with extremely high quality factors. Here we demonstrate high-Q light emission from a photonic-phononic nonlocal metasurface composed of monocrystalline silicon on a 4H-SiC substrate. The platform supports BIC-enabled ultranarrow band emission for both TE and TM polarizations;

Phase-enhanced directional asymmetry in photon-phonon conversion via coupled optomechanical cavities.

Nonreciprocity, characterized by direction-dependent signal propagation, is fundamental to technologies such as isolators, signal routing, and precision sensing. In this Letter, we theoretically investigated the phonon transport and the conversion between photonic and acoustic phonon signals within coupled optomechanical cavities that are driven by phase-controlled optical fields. We demonstrate that, unlike phonon transport-which necessitates both dissipation and phase-induced breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) to exhibit nonreciprocity-photon-phonon conversion shows a significant direc

Interfacial and confined water: Many-body cooperativity revealed by perturbation-resolved phonon Spectrometrics.

Water at hydrophobic interfaces or confined in nanoscaled pores defies classical explanation, exhibiting anomalous phase behavior, transport, and thermodynamics. This perspective discusses these puzzles through the synergy of an integrated bond-order-length-strength and nonbonding electron polarization with hydrogen-bond cooperativity and polarizability framework (BOLS-NEP + HBCP). Coupled with high-resolution, perturbation-resolved spectroscopy (PRS), this report suggests that molecular undercoordination or hydrophobic confinement induces a supersolid-like interfacial phase that denotes polar

Interfacial epitaxy of single-crystalline Al2(MoO4)3 flakes for anisotropic phonon polaritons.

The unique phonon characteristics of metal molybdates give rise to intriguing anisotropies in thermal conductivity and mechanical elasticity. However, direct nanoscale imaging of these phonon modes and their interactions with light remains challenging, as these materials have so far been available only as isomorphic polycrystalline films. Here, we develop a cost-effective interfacial epitaxy strategy for synthesizing thin-layer aluminum molybdate (Al2(MoO4)3, AMO) single crystals. This is achieved by confining a molybdenum foil between two sapphire substrates, which directs uniform nucleation

Strain-Tunable Phonon Coupling and Polarization Optoelectronics in Supersaturation-Grown Boron Phosphide Nanowires.

Boron phosphide (BP) nanowires represent a rare 1D semiconductor, combining outstanding chemical stability, ultrahigh hardness, and high thermal conductivity. However, their controlled growth and optical functionality remain largely unexplored due to irregular morphologies, toxic precursors, and complex synthesis routes. Here, we develop a supersaturation-engineered chemical vapor transport (CVT) strategy to synthesize air-stable, single-crystalline cubic BP nanowires with tunable diameters. Strain-engineered Raman spectroscopy reveals pronounced phonon broadening and symmetry-selective freque

Ultrafast Nano-imaging and Optical Control of Hyperbolic Phonon Polaritons at hBN/WS2 Heterojunctions.

Manipulating nanoscale light-matter interactions on ultrafast time scales is indispensable for future polaritonic devices. Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) in van der Waals materials enable deep subwavelength confinement of electromagnetic fields in the infrared region and long-distance propagation of polaritonic waves. However, achieving ultrafast imaging and optical control of HPhPs remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate the direct observation of transient modulation of HPhPs induced by local photocarrier generation in WS2/hBN heterostructures using ultrafast infrared scanning n

Phonon echo from multilevel systems and many-body interactions in low-temperature glasses.

At low temperatures, glasses exhibit distinctive properties compared to crystalline solids. A notable example is the phonon echo, a phenomenon that motivated the two-level-system (TLS) model. This model has successfully explained many universal anomalies in glasses. Here, we extend the TLS framework to a multilevel system and show that phonon echoes persist when nonlinear energy structures and disorder are included. By incorporating virtual phonon exchange, we introduce many-body interactions between these multilevel systems, leading to nonequidistant energy spacings that enhance the echo sign

Tensile strain enhances four-phonon scattering and suppresses thermal conductivity in monolayer MoSe.

Mechanical strain provides an effective means of tuning thermal conductivity in two-dimensional (2D) materials, but its effect on higher-ord … -Se bonding, softens the phonon spectrum, and lowers the group velocities of heat-carrying acoustic phonons, resulting in the reduction in thermal conductivity. Our findings clarify the distinct strain responses of 3ph and 4ph scattering and highlight the importance of 4ph scattering in fractional-layer thermal transport.

Orthogonal canalized polaritons via coupling graphene plasmon and phonon polaritons of hBN metasurface.

Metasurfaces composed of van der Waals materials exhibit extreme anisotropy and strong subwavelength confinement, enabling precise control of mid-infrared and terahertz waves for advanced photonic and optoelectronic applications. Among their intriguing phenomena, canalization - characterized by nearly diffraction-free propagation - offers significant potential for nanoscale light manipulation and enhanced light-matter interactions. Recently, gratings were demonstrated to induce synthetic transverse optical (STO) resonances, facilitating canalization perpendicular to the ribbon axis. In this st

Revealing the anisotropic phonon behaviours of layered SnS by angle/temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy.

Tin sulfide (SnS), a IV-VI group layered compound, has attracted much attention because of its excellent thermoelectric properties along the crystallographic b-axis. However, there are few reports on the identification of its in-plane orientation. We observe a strong anisotropy of the in-plane Raman signal in bulk SnS. With the help of ab initio calculations, the vibrational symmetry of each observed Raman mode in the cleaved (00l)-plane is consistent with the experimental values. The angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy, combined with electron backscattered diffraction technology, is u

Atomic-scale analysis of the physical strength and phonon transport mechanisms of monolayer β-bismuthene.

Bismuthene has opened up a new avenue in the field of nanotechnology because of its spectacular electronic and thermoelectric features. The strong spin-orbit-coupling enables its operation as the largest nontrivial bandgap topological insulator and quantum spin hall material at room temperature, which is unlikely for any other 2D material. It is also known to be the most promising thermoelectric material due to its remarkable thermoelectric properties, including a substantially high power factor. However, an in-depth understanding of the mechanical and thermal transport properties of bismuthen

Tailoring the nature and strength of electron-phonon interactions in the SrTiO3(001) 2D electron liquid.

Surfaces and interfaces offer new possibilities for tailoring the many-body interactions that dominate the electrical and thermal properties of transition metal oxides. Here, we use the prototypical two-dimensional electron liquid (2DEL) at the SrTiO3(001) surface to reveal a remarkably complex evolution of electron-phonon coupling with the tunable carrier density of this system. At low density, where superconductivity is found in the analogous 2DEL at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, our angle-resolved photoemission data show replica bands separated by 100 meV from the main bands. This is a hallm

Strong phonon scattering by layer structured PbSnS(2) in PbTe based thermoelectric materials.

The incorporation of PbSnS(2) in PbTe results in a tremendous reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity to 0.8 W/mK at room temperature, a reduction of almost 60% over bulk PbTe. Transmission electron microscopy reveals very high density displacement layers, misfit dislocations, and phase boundaries. Our thermal transport calculations based on modified Debye-Callaway model, well in agreement with the experimental measurements, reveal that the layer structured PbSnS(2) plays an important role in reducing the lattice thermal conductivity.

Investigation of topological nodal line phonons in rhenium-based alkali metal oxides (AReO4; A = Na, K, and Rb) using first principles methods.

Topological phonons in spinless systems have attracted considerable attention due to their symmetry-protected robustness and potential applications in phononic and quantum technologies. Here, we present a first-principles study of topological vibrational states in scheelite-type alkali-metal perrhenates AReO4 (A = Na, K, and Rb), which crystallize in the nonsymmorphic space group I41/a. All compounds are dynamically stable and exhibit host symmetry-enforced topological phonon features, including type-I nodal lines and quadratic nodal points. Notably, KReO4 exhibits an hourglass-like phonon dis…

Modulating nonequilibrium electron-phonon interactions and energy relaxation in MXenes by surface-anchored Mo3S7 nanoclusters.

Electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions govern photoinduced nonequilibrium dynamics of MXenes, determining hot-carrier relaxation and parasitic heat accumulation. However, strategies to deliberately modulate these interactions through chemical control, together with mechanistic understanding, remain underexplored. Here, we demonstrate the effective modulation of nonequilibrium e-ph interactions in Ti3C2Tx MXene via surface-anchored Mo3S7 nanoclusters, which introduce a rapid energy harvesting pathway competing with intrinsic e-ph relaxation. Using mild ligand substitution, Mo3S7 nanoclusters are d

Strain-Induced Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity of Monolayer NiI2 via Suppressed Spin-Phonon Coupling.

Strain engineering provides a versatile route for continuously tuning thermal conductivity. In this work, using spin-polarized density functional theory in conjunction with the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we reveal that a small biaxial tensile strain can significantly increase the thermal conductivity of the planar 2D ferromagnetic NiI2 through suppression of spin-phonon coupling, identifying a distinct magnetic mechanism for strain-controlled thermal transport. At 21 K, only 0.4% biaxial tensile strain enhances the thermal conductivity from 0.61 to 3.71 W/(mK). This improvement origi
