Electronic properties of layered phosphorus heterostructures.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered phosphorus possesses multiple structural phases with different properties. By using ab initio approaches, the electronic properties of vertical heterostructured compounds of different structural phases of layered phosphorus have been studied. Both type-I (symmetric) and type-II (staggered) band alignments have been realized in the van der Waals heterostructures. Through appropriate doping, the type-II band alignment can be further tuned to type-III (broken). The multiple types of band alignment suggest great potential of phase manipulated 2D phosphorus for next-gen…

Phosphorus Regulation in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Serum phosphorus levels stay relatively constant through the influence of multiple factors-such as parathyroid hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23, and vitamin D-on the kidney, bone, and digestive system. Whereas normal serum phosphorus ranges between 3 mg/dL to 4.5 mg/dL, large cross-sectional studies have shown that even people with normal kidney function are sometimes found to have levels ranging between 1.6 mg/dL and 6.2 mg/dL. While this may partially be due to diet and the factors mentioned above, total understanding of these atypical ranges of serum phosphorus remains uncertain. Risks …

Carbon-hydrogen to carbon-phosphorus transformations.

Literature published between 2008 and 2013 concerning the functionalization of carbon-hydrogen into carbon-phosphorus bonds is surveyed. The chapter is organized by reaction mechanism. The majority of methods still proceed via deprotonation of C-H into C-M (M=Li, Na, etc.) followed by reaction with a phosphorus electrophile P-X, where X is usually chlorine. A few examples of electrophilic aromatic substitution and related processes have also been reported, although this approach has not yet been developed significantly. Over the past 5 years a rapidly growing family of reactions includes trans…

Phosphorus metabolism in chronic kidney disease.

The knowledge about the exact mechanisms involved in phosphorus homeostasis and the evolution of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease (CKD) has improved during the last years. The discovery of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23) has revolutionized our understanding about the links between mineral metabolism, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH). FGF23 serum levels increase early in CKD before the increase of serum phosphorus or the decrease of vitamin D and there is parathyroid resistance to FGF23 in advanced CKD. Increased levels of serum phosphorus have been related in …

Removal of phosphorus from livestock effluents.

For removal of phosphorus (P) from swine liquid manure before land application, we developed a treatment process that produces low P effluents and a valuable P by-product with minimal chemical addition and ammonia losses. The new wastewater process included two sequential steps: (i) biological nitrification and (ii) increasing the pH of the nitrified wastewater to precipitate P. We hypothesized that by reduction of inorganic buffers (NH(4)(+) and carbonate alkalinity) via nitrification, P could be selectively removed by subsequent hydrated lime [Ca(OH)(2)] addition. The objective of the study …

New features in pentacoordinate phosphorus chemistry.

In reactions centered at phosphorus, whether chemical or biochemical, a pentacoordinate transition state species or an intermediate or a stable molecule is very often encountered. In this Account, recent developments in this important area are discussed and compared with the earlier literature. Particular reference, with results from our laboratory, will be made to the apicophilicity, fluxional behavior, bond parameters, and tetra- vs pentacoordination. It is shown that the familiar apicophilicity rules give an oversimplified picture as demonstrated by several exceptions. Extremities of the P-…

Optimal nutrition: calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

In the past, a major challenge for nutrition research was in defining indicators of nutritional adequacy. More recently, the research base related to the role of nutrition in chronic disease has expanded sufficiently to permit moving beyond deficiency indicators to other indicators with broader functional significance. Thus, nutrition research is faced with the new challenge of defining 'optimal nutrition'. One definition of optimal nutrition with respect to any particular nutrient could be when a functional marker reaches an 'optimal value' or plateau beyond which it is not longer affected by

Serum phosphorus in protein energy malnutrition.

Phosphorus depletion in malnutrition has not generally received attention. Serum phosphorus was measured in healthy infants (1.8 mmol/L), in well-nourished infants with acute dehydrating gastroenteritis, and in infants suffering from malnutrition. Serum phosphorus levels were found to be low in well-nourished infants with acute dehydrating gastroenteritis (1.32 mmol/L) an exceptionally low in infants with kwashiorkor (1.10 mmol/L) especially when the latter condition was accompanied by severe diarrhoea (0.66 mmol/L). Hypophosphatemia, as well as hypokalemia, was associated with marked hypotoni…

Traumatic episcleritis following phosphorus 32 testing.

Five eyes containing choroidal melanomas were found, on histopathologic examination, to have traumatic episcleritis with foreign-body granulomas and scleral edema underlying the area of tumor. This reaction was clearly correlated with phosphorus 32 testing that had been performed one to four weeks earlier. In all cases, enucleation had been delayed for logistic reasons. Invasion of the sclera or intrascleral canals was found in each case, with extension to the episclera in two of three small melanomas. Although the cases are few, this degree of invasion was greater than that seen in our other …

Post-immobilization phosphorus fluctuations drive selective microbial hydrolysis of sedimentary organic phosphorus and long-term P release.

In-situ immobilization has been widely utilized as an efficient and cost-effective phosphorus (P) treatment technology for lake eutrophication. However, post-immobilization P fluctuations in the overlying water may trigger the compensation of endogenous P from sediments over the long term. Microbially mediated hydrolysis of sedimentary organic phosphorus (SOP) is widely recognized as a pivotal process driving this P replenishment. However, the specific SOP hydrolysis pathways and the underlying microbial interactions remain to be systematically elucidated. Herein, this study explored the post-…

OsPLT1 negatively regulates phosphorus deficiency tolerance by modulating nitric oxide-mediated cell wall phosphorus reutilization in rice.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Phosphorus (P) deficiency severely limits rice productivity, yet the role of root developmental regulators in P homeostasis remains unclear. Here, we show that the rice PLETHORA transcription factor OsPLT1 suppresses rice tolerance to P-deficient conditions. Under P-starved conditions, osplt1 mutants accumulated more biomass and exhibited higher soluble and total P concentrations, whereas OsPLT1-overexpressing lines were hypersensitive to P deficiency. KEY RESULTS: Mechanistically, osplt1 mutants displayed reduced P retention in root cell walls, particularly in the water-…

The ethylene-insensitive tomato mutant Never ripe exhibits enhanced growth and phosphorus use efficiency under phosphorus stress.

Phosphorus (P) is a macronutrient required as a structural and functional component of biomolecules; P homeostasis interacts with phytohormone signaling pathways, such as ethylene, leading to responses in plant growth and development. Tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) have been used as a model for physiological and biochemical studies, and the ethylene-insensitive mutant Never ripe (Nr) is useful for understanding how ethylene interferes and coordinates biological processes, including responses to nutritional stresses with P. Here we aimed to evaluate how the Nr plants respond to P stres…

Phosphorus speciation using ion chromatography coupled with ICP-MS elucidates transformations of phosphorus compounds on reactive surfaces.

Phosphorus (P) is an important and often limiting element in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Insufficient understanding of the characteristics and environmental reactivities of organic and inorganic P compounds impedes developing efficient mitigation and recovery strategies. We developed a robust P speciation method utilizing ion chromatography (IC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The method was sensitive (detection limits: 1.2-4.2 μg P L-1), repeatable, and compatible with both inorganic (phosphite, phosphate, pyrophosphate, and triphosphate) and organi…

A clean process for phosphorus recovery and gallium enrichment from phosphorus flue dust by sodium carbonate roasting.

Phosphorus flue dust (PFD) is a solid waste product from phosphorus (P) production that contains P and is enriched with gallium (Ga). The recovery of these valuable components not only protects the environment, but also reduces resource waste. This study aimed to develop a green and efficient method to recover P and enriched Ga from PFD. The effects of different parameters on the P leaching rate and Ga loss rate during Na2CO3 roasting and water leaching were investigated and optimized. The reaction mechanisms during the experiment were characterized, revealing that the P-containing compounds i…
