Thirty-eight years of training distribution in Olympic speed skaters.

UNLABELLED: During the last decade discussion about training-intensity distribution has been an important issue in sports science. Training-intensity distribution has not been adequately investigated in speed skating, a unique activity requiring both high power and high endurance. PURPOSE: To quantify the training-intensity distribution and training hours of successful Olympic speed skaters over 10 Olympiads. METHODS: Olympic-medal-winning trainers/coaches and speed skaters were interviewed and their training programs were analyzed. Each program was qualified and quantified: workout type (sp

Training Load and Acute Performance Decrements Following Different Training Sessions.

PURPOSE: To examine the differences in training load (TL) metrics when quantifying training sessions differing in intensity and duration. The relationship between the TL metrics and the acute performance decrement measured immediately after the sessions was also assessed. METHODS: Eleven male recreational cyclists performed 4 training sessions in a random order, immediately followed by a 3-km time trial (TT). Before this period, participants performed the time TT in order to obtain a baseline performance. The difference in the average power output for the TTs following the training sessions w

The impact of physical load on duration estimation in sport.

We investigated whether physical load has an influence on the accuracy of duration estimation of sporting activities presented in real time … ow motion may worsen the assessment of sports performance. Additionally, we could show that intense physical exertion contributes to reducing the overestimation of time.

Prediction of performance reduction in self-paced exercise as modulated by the rating of perceived exertion.

PURPOSE: Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a scale of exercise difficulty and has been hypothesized to be a regulator of work rate during self-pacing. The goal of this work was to develop a dynamic prediction of RPE and to characterize the control strategy employed to reduce work rate during self-paced exercise using RPE as feedback. METHODS: Training and test data were acquired from the literature to develop a linear regression of RPE as a function of four physiological variables: core temperature, mean-weighted skin temperature, metabolic rate, and integral of relative oxygen consumptio

Pulmonary gas exchange dynamics and the tolerance to muscular exercise: effects of fitness and training.

Oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics are generally agreed to be first-order for moderate work rates with a time constant (tau VO2) that is thought to reflect the kinetics of intramuscular creatine phosphate depletion. However, when there is a concomitant lactic acidosis, tau VO2 is appreciably longer, reflecting an additional, delayed and slowed component that leads to VO2S greater than the aerobic equivalent of that work rate and which therefore invalidates current techniques for O2 deficit estimation. This "excess" VO2 is no more than approximately 250-300 ml/min at work rates for which [lactate] an

Acute Effects of Guarana (Paullinia cupana) Supplementation on Cognitive Performance, Technical Skills, and Physiological Responses in Amateur Soccer Players.

This study investigated the acute effects of guarana supplementation on cognitive, technical, physiological, and psychological responses in … Passing Test (LSPT) before and after a 20 min SSG protocol. Heart rate (HR), HR recovery, perceived physical exertion, perceived mental exertion, mood state, and 24 h wellness were assessed. Guarana significantly improved TMT-A performance compared with placebo (p = 0.005, η2p = 0.05), whereas no significant differences were observed for TMT-B (p = 0.08, η2p = 0.02 …

Animal models in the study of exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy.

Exercise training-induced cardiac hypertrophy occurs following a program of aerobic endurance exercise training and it is considered as a physiologically beneficial adaptation. To investigate the underlying biology of physiological hypertrophy, we rely on robust experimental models of exercise training in laboratory animals that mimic the training response in humans. A number of experimental strategies have been established, such as treadmill and voluntary wheel running and swim training models that all associate with cardiac growth. These approaches have been applied to numerous animal models

Bone density in competitive cyclists.

To investigate current theories of the contributing factors to osteopenia/osteoporosis in competitive cyclists, we present a narrative review of published cross-sectional studies investigating plausible etiologies of decreased bone density in competitive cyclists. Aggregate from multiple published studies as cited. Bone mineral density in cyclists appears to be correlated positively to the cumulative amount of bone loading forces experienced over a lifetime. However, decreases in bone mineral density are noted over the short term if bone loading forces are removed, despite previous gains. Ther

Work and lifestyle factors associated with musculoskeletal pain among professional cleaners: a cross-sectional study.

When controlling for various confounders, cleaners experiencing high physical exertion during work showed higher LBP and NSP compared with those experiencing low and moderate physical exertion (p < 0.0001). Low recognition from management was also associated with higher LBP and NSP (p < 0.05). Several factors did not reach statistical …

Examination of differential ratings of perceived exertion (dRPE) during bio-banded small-sided games.

The aims of the current study were to investigate the use of dRPE with academy soccer players to: 1) examine the effect of bio-banded and non-bio-banded maturity groups within SSG on players dRPE; 2) describe the multivariate relationships between dRPE measures investigating the sources of intra and inter-individual variation, and the effects of maturation and bio-banding. Using 32 highly trained under (U) 12 to U14 soccer players (mean (SD) age 12.9 (0.9) years, body mass 46.4 (8.5) kg and stature 158.2 (14.9) cm) academy soccer players from two English professional male soccer academies. [A study on the effects of the physical load of instructors during ice skating camp].

The present study was conducted to estimate the effects of the physical load of instructors during ice skating camp. The subjects were 9 instructors aged from 20 to 24. To discover measures to relieve the physical load, we measured 1) urinary excretion of catecholamine (noradrenaline; NA, adrenaline; A), 17-OHCS, creatinine and nitrogen; N each day, 2) subjective symptoms of fatigue three time a day (morning, after skating, and at night), 3) nutrient intakes, 4) performed a time study and 5) measured the heart rate during skating instruction. The main results obtained were as follows: 1) The m
