The EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of Matsucoccus matsumurae (Hemiptera: Matsucoccidae), the Massonian pine bast scale, for the EU territory. This pest categorisation was initiated following the commodity risk assessment of artificially dwarfed plants from China consisting of Pinus parviflora (Japanese white pine) grafted on P. thunbergii (Japanese black pine) performed by EFSA, in which M. matsumurae was identified as a pest of possible concern. However, its identity is not firmly established due to uncertainty regarding its taxonomic relationship with Matsucoccus

The article presents a review of the historical facts related to the discovery and introduction of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. The history of studying aminoquinoline preparations is associated with the discovery of the antimalarial action of the bark of the quinine tree, the isolation of quinine from other active substances - alkaloids and the determination of their structure. The structural similarity of quinine and one of the first chemically synthesized dyes - methylene blue-was an important factor at the beginning of the synthesis of molecules with antimalarial activity in the 1930

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Oral candidiasis is one of the most common fungal infections in humans. The treatment and prophylaxis of the patients suffering from this infection require the identification of new anti-Candida agents with no side effects or toxicity like medicinal plants. The present study was conducted to compare the antifungal activities of the aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts of the bark and roots of P. granatum with those of two routine antifungal agents (i.e., fluconazole and nystatin) on oral Candida strains isolated from liver transplant recipients.

Tree bark near former mercury (Hg) mines and roasting plants is known to have exceptionally high (up to several mg kg-1) Hg concentrations. This study explores the change of Hg speciation with depth (down to 25-30 mm from the outermost surface) in black pine (Pinus nigra) bark by means of high-resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (HR-XANES) spectroscopy at the Hg LIII-edge. Principal component analysis and linear combination fitting applied to the HR-XANES spectra suggested that in the outermost layer (∼0-2 mm from the surface), roughly 50% of Hg is in the form of nanoparticulate me
