Enhanced cadmium phytoextraction in Brassica juncea by a hyperaccumulator-sourced synthetic inoculant.

Synthetic communities (SynComs) of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could enhance cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction and promote plant growth in Brassica juncea L. However, the precise molecular mechanisms of facilitated Cd uptake and accumulation remain unclear. Here, using a Cd-specific fluorescent probe, we demonstrated that SynComs application markedly improved Cd distribution and uptake within plant roots. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses under Cd stress revealed that SynComs mitigate Cd-induced stress by activating plant antioxidative defense system, encompassing antiox

Defensive Molecules Momilactones A and B: Function, Biosynthesis, Induction and Occurrence.

Labdane-related diterpenoids, momilactones A and B were isolated and identified in rice husks in 1973 and later found in rice leaves, straws, roots, root exudate, other several Poaceae species and the moss species Calohypnum plumiforme. The functions of momilactones in rice are well documented. Momilactones in rice plants suppressed the growth of fungal pathogens, indicating the defense function against pathogen attacks. Rice plants also inhibited the growth of adjacent competitive plants through the root secretion of momilactones into their rhizosphere due to the potent growth-inhibitory acti

Auxin-rhizomicrobiome interactions as a driver of climate-resilient root architecture: a conceptual framework for sustainable agriculture.

Abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity represent major constraints to global crop productivity, necessitating innovative strategies for enhancing plant resilience. As a critical regulator of root system architecture, auxin (specifically indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)) functions as a vital cross-kingdom signaling molecule that mediates dynamic interactions between plants and auxin-synthesizing rhizosphere microorganisms. This review explores the role of auxin as a cross-kingdom signaling molecule mediating interactions between plants and the rhizosphere microbiome. Auxin-producing plant grow

Gummivory and gut morphology in two sympatric callitrichids (Callithrix emiliae and Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli) from western Brazilian Amazonia.

A comparative analysis of the gastrointestinal tracts of wild-caught marmosets, Callithrix emiliae, and tamarins, Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli, was undertaken in order to evaluate the degree of specialisation for digestion of plant exudates. Compared to S.f. weddelli, C. emiliae exhibits a reduced small intestine and a relatively large, compartmentalised caecum in which gum is probably fermented. The apparent specialisation of the digestive tract in C. emiliae correlates with that of its dentition, which is adapted for gouging the bark of gum-producing plants. A similar degree of specialisati…

Root secreted metabolites and proteins are involved in the early events of plant-plant recognition prior to competition.

The mechanism whereby organisms interact and differentiate between others has been at the forefront of scientific inquiry, particularly in humans and certain animals. It is widely accepted that plants also interact, but the degree of this interaction has been constricted to competition for space, nutrients, water and light. Here, we analyzed the root secreted metabolites and proteins involved in early plant neighbor recognition by using Arabidopsis thaliana Col-0 ecotype (Col) as our focal plant co-cultured in vitro with different neighbors [A. thaliana Ler ecotype (Ler) or Capsella rubella (C

Soil iron modulates beneficial maize microbiome feedbacks in rotations with wheat.

BACKGROUND: Plants change their surrounding soil microbiome by root exudates and these conditioned microbiomes impact the performance of the present as well as the next plant generation as for example in crop rotations. The big challenge is that such 'microbiome feedbacks' are highly context-dependent, i.e. they vary in strength and direction dependent on the local soil environment - of which the driving factor(s) remain unknown. Including maize in crop rotations involves benzoxazinoids (BXs), which are exuded from roots and alter the soil microbiome, which in turn affects growth and defence o

Fine-tuning by strigolactones of root response to low phosphate.

Strigolactones are plant hormones that regulate the development of different plant parts. In the shoot, they regulate axillary bud outgrowth and in the root, root architecture and root-hair length and density. Strigolactones are also involved with communication in the rhizosphere, including enhancement of hyphal branching of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Here we present the role and activity of strigolactones under conditions of phosphate deprivation. Under these conditions, their levels of biosynthesis and exudation increase, leading to changes in shoot and root development. At least for the

Underground Signals: The Ecological Power of Root Volatiles.

Root volatiles mediate diverse belowground interactions among plants, microbes, and invertebrates, but biological and environmental conditions strongly influence their production, movement, perception, and ecological effects. This review synthesizes current knowledge through an integrative conceptual framework linking five dimensions: (1) chemical diversity and biosynthesis; (2) regulation by biotic and abiotic factors; (3) plant internal signaling and resource allocation; (4) ecological adaptation and reciprocal evolutionary interactions with soil organisms; and (5) implications for agricultu

SiO2@CuO Nanozyme Reinforces Plant-Microbiome Synergies for Simultaneous Yield Enhancement, Nutritional Fortification, and a Beneficial Soil Legacy.

Plant associated microbes play pivotal role in promoting host fitness and health. However, modern agricultural practices, such as agrochemicals use and domestication are eroding plant-microbe partnership. Here, we show that nanoenabled seed priming strengthens plant-microbe interactions, enhancing the plant holobiont performance. We found that SiO2@CuO nanozymes (NZs) with peroxidase (POD)-like activities, as seed priming agent, initiate earlier and stronger seed respiration and boost exudates release (sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids), creating a nutrient-rich and transiently hypoxic sper

Is there a critical level of shoot phosphorus concentration for cluster-root formation in Lupinus albus?

This study examined the effects of localised phosphorus (P) supply on cluster-root formation and citrate exudation in white lupin (Lupinus albus L. cv. Kiev Mutant). White lupin plants were grown in nutrient solutions with a range of P supplies in a split-root system with one root half deprived of P and the other root supplied with 0, 2, 5, 8, 10 or 75 μm P. Plants were also grown in soil with or without organic matter added to the top layer. The proportion of cluster roots as a percentage of the total root biomass decreased similarly on both root halves with increasing P supply in the hydropo

Increased pine root exudation of phenolic acids and amino acids under drought.

Belowground carbon (C) allocation by trees, particularly through root exudation, is a key pathway influencing long-term C storage in forest soils. Future climate change scenarios, such as drought and elevated CO2 (eCO2) strongly affect trees' physiology and influence belowground C allocation. However, how the rate and chemical composition of root exudation change, especially under the combined effect of drought and eCO2, remains poorly understood. We conducted an experiment to examine the single and combined effects of drought and eCO2 on the belowground C allocation of Pinus brutia Ten saplin

Microbial stability of mineral-associated root exudates governed by mineral association capacity, exudate nitrogen availability and their pH.

Low-molecular-weight organic compounds, like root exudates, can directly associate with clay minerals, reducing their microbial availability. However, it remains unclear whether the microbial stability of mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) is influenced by the properties and their interactions of the original minerals and organic compounds. This study quantified the maximal association capacity of four typical clay minerals (kaolinite, illite, vermiculite, and montmorillonite) and five common root exudate compounds (oxalic acid, citric acid, glucose, alanine, and N-acetylglucosamine) wit

Plant mineral nutrition and disease resistance: A significant linkage for sustainable crop protection.

Complete and balanced nutrition has always been the first line of plant defense due to the direct involvement of mineral elements in plant protection. Mineral elements affect plant health directly by modulating the activity of redox enzymes or improving the plant vigor indirectly by altering root exudates, and changing microflora population dynamics, rhizosphere soil nutrient content, pH fluctuation, lignin deposition, and phytoalexin biosynthesis. Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important macronutrients having a significant impact on the host-pathogen axis. N negatively affects the plant's ph

Pseudomonadaceae Promotes Tobacco Defense Against Pathogen Invasion via Root Exudate Reprogramming.

Microbial pathogens pose a serious challenge to food security under climate change. Microbiomes can filter out incoming pathogens. However, the specific microbial taxa and mechanisms that indicate the response of the microbiome and plant health to the invasion of pathogens remain largely unknown. Here, we combine multiple field surveys and experiments with DNA and RNA sequencing using tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum as the model system, and f ind that Pseudomonadaceae constitute an important root-associated component against pathogen invasions

The precisely regulated keystone taxa facilitate microbial mineralization of soil organic phosphorus via niche partitioning.

Rhizosphere keystone taxa critically drive microbial community stability and soil biogeochemical cycles. However, the manipulation of such taxa remains a challenge. This study simulated plant-mediated modulation of keystone taxa via simplified synthetic root exudates to track their compositional shifts. The combination of luteolin, myristic acid, and glucose enhanced rhizosphere phosphatase activity, significantly enriched Domibacillus indicus D99, and converted it into a keystone taxon. This precise regulation was driven by transcriptional upregulation of C metabolism and an unusual fatty aci

Role of the plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase in the regulation of organic acid exudation under aluminum toxicity and phosphorus deficiency.

Aluminum (Al) toxicity and phosphorus (P) deficiency are 2 major limiting factors for plant growth and crop production in acidic soils. Organic acids exuded from roots have been generally regarded as a major resistance mechanism to Al toxicity and P deficiency. The exudation of organic acids is mediated by membrane-localized OA transporters, such as ALMT (Al-activated malate transporter) and MATE (multidrug and toxic compound extrusion). Beside on up-regulation expression of organic acids transporter gene, transcriptional, translational and post-translational regulation of the plasma membrane
