Towards an integrated molecular understanding of plant hormones.

From seed dormancy to pathogen attacks and senescence, many events in a plant's life are critically controlled by low-molecular-weight signaling molecules, called plant hormones. These master regulators include abscisic acid, auxins, brassinosteroids, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellins, jasmonates, salicylates, and strigolactones. Years of research have unveiled multiple aspects of their biosynthesis, transport, signaling, functions, and interactions. With this knowledge, complex molecular networks have been established and refined over time in an attempt to explain how plant hormones collecti

Gibberellic acid promotes single-celled fiber elongation through the activation of two signaling cascades in cotton.

The agricultural green revolution spectacularly enhanced crop yield through modification of gibberellin (GA) signaling. However, in cotton, the GA signaling cascades remain elusive, limiting our potential to cultivate new cotton varieties and improve yield and quality. Here, we identified that GA prominently stimulated fiber elongation through the degradation of DELLA protein GhSLR1, thereby disabling GhSLR1's physical interaction with two transcription factors, GhZFP8 and GhBLH1. Subsequently, the resultant free GhBLH1 binds to GhKCS12 promoter and activates its expression to enhance VLCFAs b

The Effector RipAW Enhances Ralstonia solanacearum Invasion in Arabidopsis via CBP60g/SARD1-Dependent and -Independent Pathways.

CaM-binding Protein 60-like G (CBP60g) and Systemic Acquired Resistance Deficient 1 (SARD1) are key immune signalling regulators that redundantly promote salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis and plant immunity. Pathogen effectors often target these immune nodes to suppress plant defence. However, the role of bacterial effectors in disabling CBP60g and SARD1 to increase plant susceptibility remains unclear. In this study, we show that RipAW, an E3 ligase effector from Ralstonia solanacearum, induces root architecture changes and enhances plant susceptibility to R. solanacearum in Est::RipAW transge

The master role of siRNAs in plant immunity.

Gene silencing mediated by small noncoding RNAs (sRNAs) is a fundamental gene regulation mechanism in eukaryotes that broadly governs cellular processes. It has been established that sRNAs are critical regulators of plant growth, development, and antiviral defence, while accumulating studies support positive roles of sRNAs in plant defence against bacteria and eukaryotic pathogens such as fungi and oomycetes. Emerging evidence suggests that plant sRNAs move between species and function as antimicrobial agents against nonviral parasites. Multiple plant pathosystems have been shown to involve a

Analysis of the Causes of Split Pit in Peaches.

Split pit is a key factor affecting the quality and yield of peaches; it refers to the failure of the endocarp to close along the suture line. There are significant cultivar-specific differences in peaches regarding their susceptibility or resistance to split pit. During fruit ripening, the stable lignification of the endocarp is crucial to prevent split pit. Excessively rapid and unstable fruit development caused by extreme environments seriously affects endocarp formation, leading to split-pit traits. The uneven distribution of phytohormones is one of the important reasons for uneven fruit g

Salicylic acid beyond defence: its role in plant growth and development.

In recent years salicylic acid (SA) has been the focus of intensive research due to its function as an endogenous signal mediating local and systemic plant defence responses against pathogens. It has also been found that SA plays a role during the plant response to abiotic stresses such as drought, chilling, heavy metal toxicity, heat, and osmotic stress. In this sense, SA appears to be, just like in mammals, an 'effective therapeutic agent' for plants. Besides this function during biotic and abiotic stress, SA plays a crucial role in the regulation of physiological and biochemical processes d

Integrated light spectrum and growth regulators improved the growth of saffron daughter corms by regulating carbohydrate metabolism in a novel two-stage cropping system.

BACKGROUND: Saffron, a valuable spice and industrial crop used in food, pharma, and cosmetics, is propagated only vegetatively via corms due to triploid male sterility. Corms are the primary storage organs and determine both the yield and quality of daughter corms. However, the optimal growing conditions for producing large, heavy daughter corms remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we examined the effects of light spectra and plant growth regulators on photosynthetic pigments, starch accumulation, and daughter corm production in a two-stage system, with reproductive growth occurring i

Stories of Salicylic Acid: A Plant Defense Hormone.

Salicylic acid (SA) is a key plant hormone required for establishing resistance to many pathogens. SA biosynthesis involves two main metabolic pathways with multiple steps: the isochorismate and the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase pathways. Transcriptional regulations of SA biosynthesis are important for fine-tuning SA level in plants. We highlight here recent discoveries on SA biosynthesis and transcriptional regulations of SA biosynthesis. In addition, SA perception by NPR proteins is important to fulfil its function as a defense hormone. We highlight recent work to give a full picture of how NP

Functional identification of apple MdMYB2 gene in phosphate-starvation response.

Inorganic phosphate (Pi) starvation severely affects the normal growth and development of plants. Here, a Pi-responsive gene, named MdMYB2 (MDP0000823458), was cloned and functionally identified in apple. Overexpression of MdMYB2 regulated the expression of Pi starvation-induced (PSI) genes and then promoted phosphate assimilation and utilization. The ectopic expression of MdMYB2 in Arabidopsis influenced plant growth and flowering, which was partially rescued by application of exogenous gibberellin (GA). These results indicated that MdMYB2 may be an essential regulator in phosphate utilizatio

Fuelling the top - Metabolic control of shoot apical meristem function and plant development.

Plant development relies on a complex network of transcription factors and hormone signalling pathways that guide pattern formation and developmental transitions in the meristems. Yet, how this core network is regulated to enable developmental plasticity remains poorly understood. A key question is how information about nutrient availability influences growth decisions, with nutrients acting not only as substrates for energy production and anabolism but also as regulatory signals. Here, we review recent advances in plant nutrient signalling during development, focussing on how carbon and nitro

SnRK2.10 in apple positively regulates the nitrogen use efficiency via modulating the nitrogen uptake.

Sucrose non-fermentation-1-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) family members play key roles in plant adaptation to environmental stress. In this study, low nitrogen (N) stress induced the expression of SnRK2.10, which mitigated the adverse effects of N deficiency in apple plants. SnRK2.10-overexpressing (OE) plants showed enhanced growth and higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), whereas SnRK2.10-silenced (Ri) plants exhibited more severe growth inhibition and reduced NUE, compared with the wild-type (WT) plants under low N conditions. The transcriptomic and proteomic analyses indicated that SnRK

Danger-associated peptide modulates iron deficiency signaling and root growth in Arabidopsis.

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for plants and humans, with plants being a primary dietary Fe source. Fe availability significantly affects plant health, development, and yield. Its deficiency severely inhibits plant growth; however, the mechanisms by which plants coordinate growth and Fe acquisition under Fe-deficient conditions are not fully understood. This study uncovers a novel role of the signaling peptide PROPEP2 and its receptor PEPR2 in regulating plant growth and Fe uptake during Fe deficiency. PROPEP2 expression is strongly induced under Fe deficiency. Loss-of-function mutan

Thyme Oil Alleviates Cadmium-Induced Disturbances in Mitotic Activity, Cytoskeletal Organization and H3T3/H3S10 Phosphorylation in Vicia faba.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination, through induction of oxidative stress, severely impairs plant growth. Using primary roots of Vicia faba, we investigated how a 24 h incubation in CdCl2 solution (175 µM) affects mitotic progression in meristems and assessed whether thyme essential oil (TO; 0.03%, v/v), as a natural antioxidant, can protect proliferating cells during simultaneous Cd exposure. Cd strongly inhibited root growth, reduced mitotic index tenfold (to 0.6%), induced chromatin condensation, decreased CDKA protein levels and CycB transcripts and proteins, caused pronounced microtubule bundling

Unravelling the Multifunctional Roles of Plant LIM Proteins in Growth, Development, and Stress Responses.

LIM (Lin-11, Isl-1, and Mec-3 domain) proteins are evolutionarily conserved proteins that regulate diverse cellular processes in plants, including actin cytoskeleton organization, organ size determination, protein stability, and transcription-associated regulation. Therefore, these proteins have emerged as important regulators of plant growth, development, and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Numerous genome-wide studies, functional analyses, and mechanistic investigations in diverse plant species have considerably expanded our understanding of this gene family. However, these advance

Yeast a potential bio-agent: future for plant growth and postharvest disease management for sustainable agriculture.

The native microbial flora and fauna are replaced by commercial chemical fertilizers and pesticides, in the current agricultural system. Imbalance of beneficial microbial diversity and natural competitors increases the severity of plant diseases. Hence, sustainable agricultural practices like bio-inoculant, stress tolerant consortium, crop rotation and mix cropping sequences is only the solution of recharging the microbial population in soils to make healthier for crop productivity and suppression of soil borne phytopathogen. Microorganisms use several direct mechanism activities, e.g. product

Phytohormone-Mediated Regulation of Plant Cold Stress Tolerance: Signaling, Hormonal Crosstalk, and Translational Perspectives.

Cold stress (CS) represents a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth, development, and productivity. To cope with low-temperature conditions, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for CS perception and response, mediated through complex cellular signaling networks and physiological processes. Central to these adaptive responses are phytohormones, which function either independently or through synergistic and antagonistic interactions to fine-tune CS tolerance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the roles of major classical phytohormones and signaling me

MicroRNA-mediated regulation of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit curvature.

Curved cucumber fruits are classified as a malformation, significantly compromising their commercial value. However, research on cucumber curvature remains limited, and there are no existing reports addressing post-transcriptional regulation mediated by microRNA. In this study, histological and endogenous hormone analyses revealed different distributions of auxin, brassinosteroid, and cytokinin between the concave and convex sides of curved fruits. This asymmetry in hormone distribution led to uneven growth. The growth was driven by parenchyma cells division on the second day post anthesis, an
