Effects of phytogenic supplementation at different dietary protein concentrations on performance, rumen fermentation, and nutrient digestibility in lactating dairy diets.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of phytogenic supplementation at different dietary protein concentrations in lactating dairy cattle diets. We hypothesized that phytogenic supplementation with a blend of several plant-based ingredients providing saponins, encapsulated cinnamaldehyde, curcumin, capsaicin, and piperine would act synergistically with dietary protein supply to maintain or enhance lactational performance when CP is adequate. Twenty-four lactating Holstein dairy cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin Square design with 4 28-d experimental periods (21 d adaptation + 7 d collection) and 4 tr

Vitamin B12 concentrations vary greatly in milk donated to a large provincial milk bank, and are influenced by supplementation and parity.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Feeding parent's milk with supplemental donor milk (DM) is the optimal way to feed very low birth weight (VLBW) infants instead of formula; however, suboptimal neurodevelopment persists. This is believed due, in part, to suboptimal nutrition. Given vitamin B12's role in neurodevelopment and increased adoption of plant-based diets among females of child-bearing age, we aimed to determine the adequacy of vitamin B12 in DM (n = 380 donors) and associated donor characteristics. METHODS: Vitamin B12 was measured in consecutive raw DM donations received at the milk bank from Marc

Treatment and prevention of kwashiorkor.

Recent research carried out on kwashiorkor in Kampala, Uganda, is discussed. The first essential in both the treatment and the prevention of this disease being a diet rich in protein (preferably animal protein, to ensure an adequate intake of vitamin B(12) and a satisfactory mixture of amino-acids), methods of incorporating sufficient protein into children's diets were investigated. For the treatment of severe cases, two high-protein diets-one based on animal protein, the other on plant protein-gave good results. In the first, the protein was obtained from dried skimmed milk and a calcium casei

Traditional Eye Remedies and Ocular Complications in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review.

Traditional eye medicine (TEM) refers to substances or practices used outside conventional ophthalmic care to treat eye conditions, including plant extracts, animal products, oils, breast milk, and locally prepared mixtures applied directly to the eye. In Sub-Saharan Africa, TEM remains widely used due to cultural beliefs, limited access to formal eye care, and reliance on traditional healers, with reported prevalence ranging from 5.9% to 82.3%. This systematic review evaluates the prevalence, types, and ocular outcomes associated with TEM use in Sub-Saharan Africa. The review was conducted in

Influence of drying techniques on milk thistle (Silybum marianum) protein isolate: Characterization, structural, and techno-functional properties.

Unraveling alternatives to animal-based protein is an urgent global demand, and milk thistle seed protein isolate (MSPI) represents an underexploited and promising plant-based protein source for food applications. Therefore, the effects of spray (S-MSPI), freeze (F-MSPI), and oven-drying (O-MSPI) on the nutritional, physicochemical, structural, thermal, and functional attributes of MSPI have been investigated. Remarkably, F-MSPI had the highest amino acid scores in comparison with the WHO/FAO reference pattern. Morphologically, the particles of F-MSPI sample appeared as irregular porous flakes

Milk-derived peptone reduces EHEC virulence by inhibiting the type III secretion system.

The link between diet and overall human health is well established, with certain diets known to promote better health and be associated with a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases. Previous research has also demonstrated the direct effects of diet on microbiome composition, diversity, and fitness, which can, in turn, alter colonization resistance and the immune response against enteric pathogens. However, much less is known regarding the direct effect of diet on the virulence of pathogenic bacteria. To examine the effect of diet on bacterial virulence while maintaining constant macronut

Bovine leukemia virus seroprevalence among cattle presented for slaughter in the United States.

Infection with bovine leukemia virus (BLV) results in economic loss because of reduced productivity, especially reduced milk production, and early culling. In the United States, studies in 1996, 1999, and 2007 showed BLV infection to be widespread, especially in dairy herds. We updated information herein on BLV seroprevalence in the United States, using samples submitted for testing and found negative for antibodies for Brucella by the Kentucky Eastern Regional Federal Brucellosis Laboratory. From October 2014 through August 2015, 2,000 samples from all regions of the contiguous United States

Safety evaluation of the food enzyme 3-phytase from the genetically modified Aspergillus niger strain NPH.

The food enzyme 3-phytase (myo-inositol-hexakisphosphate 3-phosphohydrolase EC 3.1.3.8) is produced with the genetically modified Aspergillus niger strain NPH by DSM Food Specialties. The genetic modifications do not give rise to safety concerns. The food enzyme was considered free from viable cells of the production organism and its DNA. It is intended to be used in three food manufacturing processes: processing of cereals and other grains for the production of (1) baked products and (2) distilled alcohol, and the processing of plant- and fungal-derived products for the production of (3) plan

Phospholipolysis Caused by Different Types of Bacterial Phospholipases During Cold Storage of Bovine Raw Milk Is Prevented by N2 Gas Flushing.

Cold storage aims to preserve the quality and safety of raw milk from farms to dairies; unfortunately, low temperatures also promote the growth of psychrotrophic bacteria, some of which produce heat-stable enzymes that cause spoilage of milk or dairy products. Previously, N2 gas flushing of raw milk has demonstrated significant potential as a method to hinder bacterial growth at both laboratory and pilot plant scales. Using a mass spectrometry-based lipidomics approach, we examined the impact of cold storage [at 6°C for up to 7 days, the control condition (C)], on the relative amounts of major

Food allergy - New risks through vegan diet? Overview of new allergen sources and current data on the potential risk of anaphylaxis.

A vegan diet is increasingly en vogue, i.e., a diet based on plants, in which animal products are completely avoided, often for health and environmental reasons. The menu is supplemented with pulses (e.g., soy, lentils, peas), nuts (e.g., cashew, macadamia, almond, pecan, para, walnut) and seeds (e.g., chia, flaxseed) or pseudo-grains (quinoa, buckwheat). Indeed, the product range is expanding to include vegan foods such as milk alternatives (e.g., oat, almond, soy drinks) and cheese or meat substitutes (e.g., soy-based). Food allergies are also on the rise, with an increasing prevalence world
