In a total of 152 cases of severe cerebral infarction intravascular infusion of plasma substitutes was a part of combined therapy. Hemostasis studies in these patients allowed us to detect various degrees of hypercoagulation as a response to hemodilution. In cases of most pronounced post-hemodilution++ hypercoagulation (77 patients) complications, including those of thrombohemorrhagic nature, were increased in rate (74%) with more severe course of cerebral infarction. Inasmuch as no single variable is able to predict the outcome or evaluate the effect of various treatments used for resuscitation of shock, a statistical method was applied to evaluate several plasma substitutes by a numerical system based on 10 different hemodynamic and metabolic variables. We tested the haemorheological effects of the addition of 3.5% oxypolygelatine, 10% dextran 40, 6% dextran 75 or 5% albumin, respectively, to fresh donor blood of 25 healthy young persons. We examined the aggregation and the viscosity of substituent plasma mixtures in such various, but constant volume relations as may be present during intravenous infusion. Albumin reduced viscosity and aggregation, but especially dextran 75 increased both parameters significantly.
