Playing as a basic form of living: on Winnicott's "Playing: A Theoretical Statement".

The author offers a creative reading of Winnicott's "Playing: A theoretical statement," a paper in which Winnicott makes his most fully developed statement of his understanding of the phenomenon of playing. Winnicott is less interested in the symbolic content of play than in the experience of playing. Interpretation may at times supplement the psychic work the child and analyst achieve in playing together, but the principal agent of psychic change is the experience of playing. In the course of this paper, the author (1) views Winnicott's concept of transitional objects and phenomena as a signi

Assessment of assertion.

Behavioral assessment of assertion is an evolving technology. Although there have been many recent advances in the assessment of assertion, many unresolved issues continue to plague researcher and clinician alike. At a conceptual level, a precise theoretical rationale of assertion has yet to be articulated and accepted. Comprehensive identification of the various parameters that influence assertive responding have not been adequately evaluated, although person and situational variables are widely accepted parameters. Although a plethora of assessment instruments and strategies have emerged, mo

Group therapy with sexually molested children.

It should be stressed that the young children's group was only a part of the overall treatment approach that forms the family context of the Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program. Because the therapists also work with entire families, they have come to accept that the child is not the only victim. Often the mothers and fathers in this program were themselves victims of sexual assaults when they were children, and have carried this victim roles with them into adulthood. A child growing up in this family system will learn the victim role well. Her denial and/or fear of sexual aggression, as well

The Analyst's Act and the Child's Desire: A Retrospective Case Study.

In this paper, I lay out a blueprint for a child analysis, stipulating the terms and ethics of the Lacanian field of psychoanalysis, the position of the analyst in that field, and the invitation to the child to discover a space for desire in the work of play. Drawing on the grounding work of Freud, Lacan, Dolto, Lefort, Mannoni, and Mathelin, I describe the mainsprings of the psychoanalytic clinic with the child. I then offer a child case and its trajectory from the development of a phobia to a symptom, and show how the primal scene fantasy and its articulation can open a space for desire in a

[Role of psychotherapy in the complex treatment of children who stutter].

In 30 preschool children the efficacy of various psychotherapeutic methods in the treatment of spasmophemia was estimated. The effect of group psychotherapy, play therapy and age-modified variants of autogenous training is described. Importance of family psychotherapy is determined, and attempts at specifying the most typical pathological family situations are made. It is noted that the psychotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of spasmophemia at the preschool age, and contributes to a stable social adaptation of the child.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Children and Adolescents with an Intellectual Disability: A Brief Introduction Children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are at an increased risk of developing mental disorders due to a range of risk factors, while access to psychotherapeutic care remains inadequate. This article provides an introduction to psychodynamic psychotherapy for this patient group and outlines central therapeutic principles. Particular emphasis is placed on a therapeutic stance of understanding, the role of countertransference processes, the adaptation of therapeutic inte

Assessment and treatment of elopement maintained by access to stereotypy.

We evaluated a treatment for elopement maintained by access to stereotypic door play. First, we conducted a functional analysis of elopement that produced undifferentiated results. Next, we conducted an assessment in which we evaluated the relation between elopement and door play. Results suggested a functional relation between the 2 behaviors (i.e., elopement was maintained by contingent access to door play). Finally, we implemented functional communication training as a treatment for elopement in which access to door play was made contingent on a target appropriate communication response.

Accessing children's knowledge of sociolinguistic rules for speech therapy lessons.

Eight dyads of misarticulating school children (M = 7:9 years) enrolled in clinical programs were videotaped while they role-played 5-min remedial articulation lessons. Analysis of lesson transcripts was carried out at selected levels (lesson management, roles, discourse contexts, communicative acts, discourse sequences, and topic introduction). The "clinicians" controlled the lesson tasks and topics and used communicative acts in a manner typical of adult clinicians. The "clients" role-played cooperatively and displayed the response patterns of children receiving remedial lessons. Hierarchica

Sex-role behavior change: intrasubject studies of boyhood gender disturbance.

Sex-role behaviors were modified in a seven-year-old boy who had been evaluated by an independent psychiatrist as manifesting cross-gender identification. The child's developmental history paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals. In Experiment 1, the boy was treated in the clinic by a nonprofessional female "therapist" who reinforced "masculine" sex-typed play behaviors and extinguished "feminine" behaviors. The treatment effects generalized to the boy's play with a different set of toys in the presence of male and female strangers, but did not generalize to the boy's play i

Using Augmented Reality to Elicit Pretend Play for Children with Autism.

Children with autism spectrum condition (ASC) suffer from deficits or developmental delays in symbolic thinking. In particular, they are often found lacking in pretend play during early childhood. Researchers believe that they encounter difficulty in generating and maintaining mental representation of pretense coupled with the immediate reality. We have developed an interactive system that explores the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to visually conceptualize the representation of pretense within an open-ended play environment. Results from an empirical study involving children

Training parents to use the natural language paradigm to increase their autistic children's speech.

Parents of four nonverbal and four echolalic autistic children were trained to increase their children's speech by using the Natural Language Paradigm (NLP), a loosely structured procedure conducted in a play environment with a variety of toys. Parents were initially trained to use the NLP in a clinic setting, with subsequent parent-child speech sessions occurring at home. The results indicated that following training, parents increased the frequency with which they required their children to speak (i.e., modeled words and phrases, prompted answers to questions). Correspondingly, all children

Efficacy of bibliotherapy combined with games to reduce fear of the dark in young children: results from a clinical trial.

UNLABELLED: Intense fear of the dark is a common issue among children, which can interfere with their daily functioning at family, social, and academic levels. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a psychotherapeutic intervention based on bibliotherapy combined with play to overcome the fear of the dark in children between 4 and 8 years old. A total of 38 children participated, who were assigned to the experimental and control conditions on the waiting list. The bibliotherapy intervention in the experimental condition involved reading a book and playing the games proposed in each ch

Training executive, attention, and motor skills: a proof-of-concept study in preschool children With ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether cognitive enhancement can be delivered through play to preschoolers with ADHD and whether it would affect severity of ADHD symptoms. METHOD: Twenty-nine 4- and 5-year-old children and their parents participated in separate group sessions (3-5 children/group). Child groups were introduced games designed to enhance inhibitory control, working memory, attention, visuospatial abilities, planning, and motor skills. Parent groups were encouraged playing these games with their children at least 30 to 45 min/day and taught strategies for scaffolding difficulty levels and
