[Isolated tuberculosis of popliteal cyst. Apropos of a case].

INTRODUCTION: Isolated localization of tuberculosis in the popliteal cyst is an exceptional affection. CASE REPORT: Mr. M.L., 18-year-old black moroccan, was admitted for a painful swelling of the left popliteal cyst, general state alteration and left thoracic pain. Clinical examination found a 5 cm on 3 cm oval tumefaction at the supero-medial part of the left popliteal hollow. No articular effusion was noted. Left knee X ray was normal, while ultrasound examination showed a modified popliteal cyst. Chest X ray showed a pleural effusion. Tuberculine skin test was positive (18 mm). A subtotal…

Anterolateral rupture of popliteal cysts in rheumatoid arthritis.

Popliteal cysts occur commonly in both normal and arthritic knees. Most cysts are formed by distension of the medially situated semimembranosus bursa. Popliteus bursa distension occurs uncommonly as a lateral popliteal cyst. Two cases of rupture of lateral cysts which produced symptoms related to the anterolateral lower leg are reported. The difficulty of diagnosing the condition because of this unusual site of inflammation and subsequent management problems are discussed.

[Double-contrast arthrography in secondary popliteal cysts].

The diagnosis of a popliteal cyst is usually made on the basis of a history of discomfort and pain in the medial portion of the popliteal region, together with the finding of a palpable mass in the popliteal fossa. The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by knee arthrography, if the cyst communicates with the knee joint; in recent years, however, noninvasive US has also become an important diagnostic aid to the radiologist. The S. Anna Hospital (Ferrara) experience is here reported in the diagnosis of symptomatic popliteal cysts, with no valve mechanism at the connection with the joint cavity.…

Gout presenting as a popliteal cyst. A case of pseudothrombophlebitis.

A 64-year-old man with progressive swelling and erythema of his right calf preceded by dull aching in the right popliteal fossa was presumed to have deep vein thrombophlebitis. A venogram revealed normal circulation in the right lower leg, and an ultrasound examination of the right popliteal fossa revealed a 2 X 5-cm popliteal cyst. Fluid aspirated from the cyst confirmed the diagnosis of gout. Popliteal cysts associated with gout are rare, and those that rupture, leak, dissect, or enlarge can mimic thrombophlebitis (a phenomenon known as pseudothrombophlebitis). Thus, the primary care physici…

Ultrasound evaluation of popliteal cysts on osteoarthritis of the knee.

Ultrasound (US) examination of the popliteal space is a noninvasive, reliable technique for the assessment of popliteal cysts. In order to determine the prevalence and significance of popliteal cysts in primary osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, we conducted a prospective clinical, radiographic and US study on 50 patients and 25 controls. Popliteal cysts were demonstrated by US in 29 of 100 (29%) knees of 21 of 500 (42%) patients, 8 of whom (38%) had bilateral cysts. The majority of cysts were small and symptomless. Cyst rupture and the "pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome" occurred in only 2 of 29 …

Demonstration of articular effusions and popliteal cysts with ultrasound.

Echography has been employed in 10 patients with knee effusions and in two patients with Baker's cysts. In all instances, echography clearly identified the effusions. In four patients, the presence of connective tissue septa were also shown. This technique appears to be preferred to arthrography or the intra-articular injection of isotopes. Nevertheless, echography provides only "morphologic" information which complements other methods of investigation.

Popliteal cysts in children. The case against surgery.

The natural history of 120 popliteal cysts in children has been reviewed. Of seventy untreated cysts fifty-one disappeared spontaneously during a mean period of one year and eight months. Of fifty cysts submitted to operation, twenty-one recurred in a mean period of seven months. Three children with recurrences had more than one further operation. Most popliteal cysts in children disappear spontaneously, and operation without very good reason is unjustified.

Natural history of popliteal cysts in the pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Cystic mass lesions in the popliteal area, called popliteal cysts or Baker's cysts, are usually minimally symptomatic and not related to intra-articular morbidity in the pediatric population. Although multiple studies have described cases of spontaneous resolution over a period of several months to a few years, others still consider surgical treatment necessary. Furthermore, no previous studies have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to confirm the disappearance of popliteal cysts. In this retrospective study, we reviewed records of patients with popliteal cysts to investigate t…

[Treatment of popliteal cyst by arthroscopy in 20 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the treatment methods and the effects of popliteal cyst with arthroscopy. METHODS: From January 2009 to January 2010,20 patients with popliteal cyst were treated with internal drainage under arthroscope, meanwhile, their joint disease were treated. There were 9 males and 11 females with an average age of (55.7 +/- 7.7) years (ranged, 46 to 70). The lump was found for 1-22 months with an average of (6.2 +/- 2.4) months and accompanying with knee pain of different degrees. All diagnosis depended on B ultrasound or MRI, which clearly showed communication of cyst and articul…

Synovial sarcoma arising in association with a popliteal cyst.

Synovial sarcoma is a relatively common soft tissue sarcoma particularly in the adolescent and young adult. We report an unusual case of a synovial sarcoma arising within a popliteal cyst in a 13-year-old female presenting with bilateral popliteal cysts. MR imaging demonstrated the cyst with evidence of subacute haemorrhage and a discrete nodule of tumour.

Popliteal Cysts: Historical Background and Current Knowledge.

Popliteal cysts were first described in 1840 by Adams, but it is from Baker's writing in 1877 that we derive the commonly used eponymic term "Baker's cyst." Associated intra-articular lesions are very common with popliteal cysts. Ultra-sonography, arthrography, and magnetic resonance imaging have all proved useful in distinguishing popliteal cysts from other cysts and from soft-tissue tumors about the knee, as well as in identifying coexisting intra-articular lesions. Cysts in pediatric patients are generally self-limited and should be treated conservatively. In the adult population, treatment…

Adventitial cyst of the popliteal artery. Report of a case.

A case of cystic degeneration of the popliteal artery in a 58-year-old male is reported. Symptoms consisted of a claudication of abrupt onset and the correct diagnostic clue was initially given by magnetic resonance of the knee and confirmed by angiography. Treatment consisted of surgical removal of the cyst and saphenous vein angioplasty of the popliteal artery, with good anatomic and functional result at one year follow-up. Diagnostic tools and treatment of the condition are briefly discussed.

Clinical and chemical characterization of an adventitial popliteal cyst.

We present further evidence that adventitial cysts of the popliteal artery are ganglions, based on studies of a lesion found in a 51-year-old man. The cyst was located entirely within the adventitia, lacked a cellular lining, and did not communicate with either the arterial lumen or the synovial space. The contents were gel-like and composed of 1.64 gm of hyaluronic acid and 0.20 gm of protein per dl. This material did not possess boundary-lubricating ability in a test system that slides natural latex rubber against glass. The histologic appearance, chemical composition, and absence of lubrica
