Forecasted 2040 global prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease using hierarchical bayesian approach.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Due to increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes, the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has also been increasing. Current forecast models may not include non-obese NAFLD. Here, we used the Bayesian approach to forecast the prevalence of NAFLD through the year 2040. METHODS: Prevalence data from 245 articles involving 2,699,627 persons were used with a hierarchical Bayesian approach to forecast the prevalence of NAFLD through 2040. Subgroup analyses were performed for age, gender, presence of metabolic syndrome, region, and smoking status. Sensitivity analy

Forecasting tuberculosis in Ethiopia using deep learning: progress toward sustainable development goal evidence from global burden of disease 1990-2021.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and treatable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which most often affects lungs and remains the second leading cause of death from infectious diseases worldwide. The National End TB Strategy aims to eliminate the TB epidemic by reducing TB-related deaths by 95% and decreasing incident TB cases by 90% by 2030, using 2015 as the baseline. Tuberculosis is the primary cause of morbidity, ranks third in hospital admissions, and is the second leading cause of death in Ethiopia, following malaria. Hence, this analysis aims to forecast and prov

The application of Bayesian forecasting to explore the effects of sex and high-fat diet on the pharmacokinetics of ropivacaine in the rat.

Bayesian forecasting is commonly applied as part of therapeutic drug monitoring to obtain individual estimates of pharmacokinetic parameters in patients. Here its utility was explored in a preclinical study involving ropivacaine, in which sparse blood sampling data was available in the rat. Initially sample-population estimates of parameters were obtained by injecting male cannulated male Sprague-Dawley rats subcutaneously with ropivacaine HCl. Blood samples were serially drawn from each rat for 12 h after the dose (rich sampling); the concentrations were used with compartmental analysis to op

Cancer in Northern Ireland by 2002.

An estimate of cancer deaths and incidence for the years 1997 and 2002, taking account of current trends and population projections for Northern Ireland is presented below. These numbers will be of value to those planning services and, in particular, for those implementing the report "Cancer Services - Investing for the Future". Cancer deaths are expected to rise by almost 13% to 4056 by the year 2002. Marked rises are expected in the number of deaths from cancer of the lung, oesophagus, kidney, bladder and prostate with smaller rises in deaths from breast and pancreatic cancer. The fall in st

Molecular profiling of the Australian plague locust pathobiome reveals a microbial driver of population suppression.

Despite recent advances in surveillance, forecasting, and management, locust plagues remain a chronic threat to global agriculture. Part of the intractability of this issue lies in the complex interplay of ecological factors driving locust population dynamics, of which the locust microbiome remains an understudied-but crucial-component. During the wet Australian summers of 2020-2022, forecasting models predicted that Australian plague locust (Chortoicetes terminifera) populations would reach plague proportions, while field-surveillance revealed the contrary. To investigate a putative microbiol

Enhancing Solar Power Forecasting Accuracy Using HMPCS and Machine Learning Techniques: An Applied Study.

BACKGROUND: Solar irradiance is a nonlinear and intermittent function, which makes accurate forecasting of solar power generation a challenge. The high variability of meteorological conditions is not well represented by conventional atmospheric models, thus hampering forecasting skill and model robustness. In this work, an advanced hybridization of multi-population cuckoo search (HMPCS) algorithm with machine learning (ML) methods is developed to enhance the predicated performance of photovoltaic (PV) power forecasting with more reliability. METHODS: In this study, a hybrid modeling framework

Burden of disease scenarios for 204 countries and territories, 2022-2050: a forecasting analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternative scenarios assessing disease burden trajectories if selected sets of risk factors were eliminated from current levels by 2050. Forecasting Thailand's mobility trends using Feature Engineered XGBoost for pandemic crisis movement management.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted global mobility patterns, with widespread population movement playing a key role in the transmission of the virus. In such a situation, Google introduced the Community Mobility Reports, which use anonymized and aggregated location data to monitor changes in movement across various location categories. These mobility trends provide important insights that help inform timely public health interventions and support data-driven decisions during and after the pandemic. This study aims to forecast human mobility trends in Thailand during the COVID-19 pan

Mathematical models for predicting human mobility in the context of infectious disease spread: introducing the impedance model.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models of human mobility have demonstrated a great potential for infectious disease epidemiology in contexts of data scarcity. While the commonly used gravity model involves parameter tuning and is thus difficult to implement without reference data, the more recent radiation model based on population densities is parameter-free, but biased. In this study we introduce the new impedance model, by analogy with electricity. Previous research has compared models on the basis of a few specific available spatial patterns. In this study, we use a systematic simulation-based ap

The incidence of West Nile disease in Russia in relation to climatic and environmental factors.

Since 1999, human cases of West Nile fever/neuroinvasive disease (WND) have been reported annually in Russia. The highest incidence has been recorded in three provinces of southern European Russia (Volgograd, Astrakhan and Rostov Provinces), yet in 2010-2012 the distribution of human cases expanded northwards considerably. From year to year, the number of WND cases varied widely, with major WND outbreaks in 1999, 2007, 2010, and 2012. The present study was aimed at identifying the most important climatic and environmental factors potentially affecting WND incidence in the three above-mentioned

[Sports, exercise and health. On the way into a new century].

In most countries throughout the world, except those affected by the HIV-Aids epidemic, populations are increasing in size, rapidly getting older, and becoming more sedentary. This combination, along with the adoption of unhealthy habits such as cigarette smoking and consumption of an animal-based rather than a plant-based diet, will result in chronic degenerative diseases becoming the most common cause of disability and premature death throughout the world during the first twenty-five years of this new millennium. As more and more populations acquire the technology that reduces the need to ex

Stochastic modeling, analysis, and simulation of Dengue in Valle del Cauca: A case study.

Dengue remains a major public health challenge in Colombia, with Valle del Cauca experiencing recurrent outbreaks characterized by seasonal fluctuations and long-term variability. Understanding the transmission dynamics of Dengue across age groups is critical for targeted interventions. In this study, we developed an age-structured stochastic host-vector model, incorporating a compartmental SIR-SI framework within a stochastic differential equation (SDE) approach. The population is stratified into youths (0-17 years) and adults (18 years and older), enabling analysis of age-specific infection

Predictive modelling of Ross River virus notifications in southeastern Australia.

Ross River virus (RRV) is a mosquito-borne virus endemic to Australia. The disease, marked by arthritis, myalgia and rash, has a complex epidemiology involving several mosquito species and wildlife reservoirs. Outbreak years coincide with climatic conditions conducive to mosquito population growth. We developed regression models for human RRV notifications in the Mildura Local Government Area, Victoria, Australia with the objective of increasing understanding of the relationships in this complex system, providing trigger points for intervention and developing a forecast model. Integrating genotypes and phenotypes improves long-term forecasts of seasonal influenza A/H3N2 evolution.

Seasonal influenza virus A/H3N2 is a major cause of death globally. Vaccination remains the most effective preventative. Rapid mutation of hemagglutinin allows viruses to escape adaptive immunity. This antigenic drift necessitates regular vaccine updates. Effective vaccine strains need to represent H3N2 populations circulating one year after strain selection. Experts select strains based on experimental measurements of antigenic drift and predictions made by models from hemagglutinin sequences. We developed a novel influenza forecasting framework that integrates phenotypic measures of antigeni

Future directions for notifiable diseases: tuberculosis-related laws in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the Philippines, and the risk of multidrug resistance to TB, there is a need to strengthen the surveillance system. In many countries, cases of TB are reported to health authorities, and reporting is an effective way to manage TB. Although TB is a universal and representative reportable disease, the Philippines does not designate it as a notifiable disease. MAIN TEXT: This study aimed to review and compare current communicable disease-related laws and regulations in the Philippines with relevant international laws and regulations
