Respiratory nematodiasis (Nematoda, Metastrongyloidea) is associated with marked type 2 inflammation in a marine mammal.

Type 2 inflammation, mediated by T-helper 2 (Th2) cells, promotes wound healing and clears large pathogens such as helminths. However, exace … rized leukocyte populations and cytokine production in the lung and lymph nodes of stranded harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) infected with metastrongyle lungworms, a group of helminths that at high burdens may cause mortality in cetaceans. In the lung, the number of eosinophils, IL-4 and IL-13 producing leukocytes was higher in porpoises with mild and …

Ectoparasites were found on two cetacean species - harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), as the most abundant cetacean species in the North Sea, and on a pilot whale (Globicephala melas), as a rare species here. Prevalence of ectoparasitic crustaceans in cetaceans was low: 7.6% in porpoises stranded in the Netherlan …

Target discrimination during active swimming in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Echolocating animals, such as bats and toothed whales, detect prey and other objects by emitting sound pulses and analyzing returning echoes. By adjusting direction, repetition rate, frequency content, and source level of their emissions, they actively control the information they obtain from returning echoes. We investigated how two trained bottlenose dolphins adjusted sound production as well as head, and body movements while approaching and discriminating between two spheres of different materials. We compared their performance with published data from harbor porpoises using the same paradi…

Ingestion of fishing gear and Anisakis sp. infection in a beached Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) in the Jeju Island, Republic of Korea: findings from post-mortem computed tomography and necropsy.

BACKGROUND: Human fishing activities have significantly affect environmental concern for marine ecosystems, conservation of marine mammals, and human health. Coastal cetaceans are highly vulnerable to ingestion of fishing gear, bycatching, or entanglement, all of which can be fatal for these animals. In particular, certain coastal dolphins and porpoises are heavily impacted by fishing gear such as angling gear or stownet, as their food often overlap with the target fish species of human fisheries. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a case of an Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena p…

Optimizing diceCT protocols for post-mortem cetacean imaging: diffusible iodine enhancement of a rare narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) fetal specimen using clinical-grade computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Post-mortem imaging has become indispensable in marine mammal research, offering non-destructive alternatives to conventional necropsy. While micro-computed tomography (microCT) provides high resolution for small specimens, its utility in cetacean fetal studies is limited by long scanning time, accessibility, and high cost. Diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced CT (diceCT) using clinical-grade scanners presents a potential solution, particularly for endangered species like the narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) (NRFP), where fetal specimens are excepti

Brucella ceti and brucellosis in cetaceans.

Since the first case of brucellosis detected in a dolphin aborted fetus, an increasing number of Brucella ceti isolates has been reported in … nce in land animal models and low infectivity for humans. However, brucellosis in some dolphins and porpoises has been demonstrated to be a severe chronic disease, displaying significant clinical and pathological signs related to abortions, male infertility, neurobrucellosis, cardiopathies, bone and skin lesions, strandings, and death.

The nightscape of the Arctic winter shapes the diving behavior of a marine predator.

Predator-prey interactions in marine ecosystems are dynamically influenced by light, as demonstrated by diel vertical migrations of low-trophic level organisms. At high latitudes, the long winter nights can provide foraging opportunities for marine predators targeting vertically migrating prey closer to the surface at night. However, there is limited documentation of such diel patterns in marine predators under extreme light regimes. To address this, we recorded the diving behavior of 17 harbour porpoises just south of the Arctic circle in West Greenland, from summer to winter. Unlike classica…

Actinomyces marimammalium sp. nov., from marine mammals.

Three strains of a previously undescribed Actinomyces-like bacterium were isolated from samples taken from two dead seals and a porpoise. Biochemical testing and PAGE analysis of whole-cell proteins indicated the strains were phenotypically similar to each other but different from previously described Actinomyces and Arcanobacterium species. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies showed the organisms from marine animals were genetically closely related and represent a hitherto unknown subline within the genus Actinomyces (sequence divergence values > 6% with recognized species). Interspecies differences in mammalian susceptibility to legacy POPs and trace metals using skin fibroblast cells.

The susceptibility to trace metals and legacy POPs is different between terrestrial and marine mammals. In this study, we established the first cell line from Indo-Pacific finless porpoises and compared the cellular responses of skin fibroblast cells from Pygmy killer whales, Pantropic spotted dolphins, Indo-Pacific finless porpoises, mice, and humans following exposure to copper, methylmercury, cadmium, PCB126, PCB153, and BDE47 to better understand the interspecies sensitivities of mammals to chemical pollutants. Low hunting costs in an expensive marine mammal predator.

Many large terrestrial mammalian predators use energy-intensive, high-risk, high-gain strategies to pursue large, high-quality prey. However, similar-sized marine mammal predators with even higher field metabolic rates (FMRs) consistently target prey three to six orders of magnitude smaller than themselves. Here, we address the question of how these active and expensive marine mammal predators can gain sufficient energy from consistently targeting small prey during breath-hold dives. Using harbor porpoises as model organisms, we show that hunting small aquatic prey is energetically cheap (<20%…

First confirmed reports of the isolation of Brucella ceti from a Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus and a killer whale Orcinus orca.

Brucella ceti has been recovered from a number species of cetaceans worldwide over the last 25 yr. Here we report, for the first time, the recovery of B. ceti from a Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus and a killer whale Orcinus orca. Recovery from an abdominal mass in the dolphin provides further evidence of the systemic pathogenic potential for B. ceti infection in cetaceans. The isolation of B. ceti ST23 (porpoise cluster) from a killer whale from a group known to eat other marine mammals raises the possibility of infection via ingestion. This report takes the number of cetacean species in UK c

Brucella ceti Infection in a Common Minke Whale ( Balaenoptera acutorostrata ) with Associated Pathology.

There are three major lineages of marine mammal strains of Brucella spp.: Brucella ceti ST23, found predominantly in porpoises; B. ceti ST26, in pelagic delphinids and ziphiids; and Brucella pinnipedialis ST24/25, predominantly in seals. The isolation of Brucella spp. in mysticetes has been described only in common minke whales ( Balaenoptera acutorostrata ) in Norway and Scotland. We report a third case of Brucella infection and isolation in a minke whale associated with a large abscess. In contrast to the two previous reports that involved isolates of B. pinnipedialis ST24 or the porpoise-as…

Illustrated cross-sectional computed tomography of the cetacean abdomino-pelvic organs.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging modality which can be used to study the anatomy and morphology of live or deceased animals in-situ. In cetaceans, existing CT anatomy studies mostly focused on the head and thoracic regions. Using postmortem CT (PMCT) scans of Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides), this study describes the cross-sectional imaging anatomy of the cetacean abdomino-pelvic organs for the first time. METHODS: PMCT scans of finless porpoises stranded in Hong Kong waters were reviewed, of which two freshly dead cases, one m…
