Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that is usually considered a monophasic disease. ADEM forms one of several categories of primary inflammatory demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system including multiple sclerosis, optic neuropathy, acute transverse myelitis, and neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease). Post-infectious and post-immunisation encephalomyelitis make up about three-quarters of cases, where the timing of a febrile event is associated with the onset of neurological disease. Post-vaccination

BACKGROUND: Dysosmia is one of the most common disorders in otorhinolaryngology. However, epidemiological data are lacking and treatment strategies are insufficiently standardized.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of causes of olfactory disorders and the different therapeutic approaches used in ENT departments in German-speaking countries. The results were also compared to findings of the survey in 2000. Furthermore, a systematic review of treatment strategies was conducted.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2010, a two-page survey addressing olfactory dysfunction was s

Central venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare cause of headache and stroke but has a wide clinical spectrum of presentations, including headache, seizures, focal neurological signs and alteration in consciousness, which can present in isolation or in various combinations. CVST is a difficult diagnosis to make in clinical practice but advances in neuroimaging allows for faster and more precise diagnosis, but it can still prove elusive. Non-infectious CVST are now more common that post-infectious, for which there are a variety of causes and risk factors in the clinical history that can sugges

Ferroptosis is a form of programmed cell death characterized by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation and is implicated in a wide range of human diseases. Emerging evidence highlights the critical role of epigenetic regulation in this process. Dysregulation of histone post-translational modifications (HPTMs) is increasingly recognized as a pivotal mechanism linking metabolic reprogramming to various pathological conditions. HPTMs constitute one of the key epigenetic regulatory mechanisms and mediate ferroptosis by modulating the transcription of core ferroptosis-related genes. This review s

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is one of the most dreaded complications of orthotopic transplantation. It consists of a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative disorders of varying clonal composition, occurring in immuno-suppressed organ allograft recipients and is frequently due to EBV infection. It is most common in heart/lung transplants followed by heart, liver, and kidney and rarely in bone marrow transplants. Clinically, PTLD can present in a number of ways ranging from features resembling infectious mononucleosis, lymphoproliferative masses involving both nodal a

OBJECTIVES: Political lability in the Near East has brought about the migration of refugees from adjacent countries to Turkey in recent years. To provide an effective health service for refugees, a needs assessment has to be done. UN refugees referring to a family medical centre located in Ankara, Turkey, were therefore investigated for health problems.
DESIGN: Medical records were studied retrospectively for age distribution, gender, origin, diagnoses, type of treatment and referral to a secondary health care setting.
SUBJECTS: 212 refugees of different countries (mostly from Iraq, Iran and

Rapid-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been classically described in the context of infectious and autoimmune stressors, most famously PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) and then PANS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric syndrome). PANS itself, however, specifically excludes neurological and medical disorders, including seizures, from the diagnostic criteria. Changes in affect, such as depression/anxiety and new-onset psychosis, have been previously described in the post-seizure period but often self-resolve. To the

People with Lewy body disease exhibit heterogeneous clinical symptoms, diverse patterns of neurodegeneration on imaging and variable Lewy body pathology at post-mortem. The brain-first versus body-first (BvB) model provides a unifying framework that may account for much of this variability. According to the BvB model, Lewy pathology originates either in autonomic nerves of the gut or other peripheral neurons (body first) or in the olfactory bulb with subsequent spread to the limbic system (brain first). Both subtypes are thought to begin largely outside the CNS, possibly triggered by exogenous

Proteinuria is defined as urinary protein excretion exceeding 150 mg/day. It may result from nonpathological (posture, fever, exercise) or pathological (glomerular or tubular) processes. Glomerular proteinuria is an early sign of kidney disease and may also play a role in the progression of glomerular damage. Asymptomatic proteinuria is common; it may be transient or persistent. Transient proteinuria is a benign condition and requires no evaluation. Persistent proteinuria can be the first sign of kidney disease. Persistent proteinuria commonly results from disorders associated with increased g

Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare autoimmune disorder without clear etiology. It is known that genetic and infectious causes trigger diseases. AOSD cases have been reported after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and post influenza vaccine. Here, we report this challenging case of adult-onset Still's disease in a patient who recently received the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (Oxford-AstraZeneca).

Myocarditis is an infectious-inflammatory disease often superimposed to individual genetic background which could favour or inhibit its progression into a chronic heart muscle disorder (most often dilated cardiomyopathy, rarely arrhythmogenic, or right-sided cardiomyopathy). Post-myocarditis cardiomyopathy is likely caused by a complex interaction between the viral infection and an individual predisposition. Some viruses are able to highlight a clinical phenotype replicating a model similar to the genetically determined conditions, while other can affect the resolution or the progressive remod

Paediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with streptococcal infection (PANDAS), is characterized by childhood-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tic disorder that has been found to have a post infectious autoimmune-mediated etiology, where the onset and subsequent exacerbations of symptoms is temporally related to group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) infection. In addition to the use of anti-tic and antiobsessional agents, the use of Penicillin during the acute phase and for prophylaxis, tonsillectomy, immunomodulatory therapies such as plasma exchange and i

Isolated acquired palatal palsy is an uncommon neurological condition in children and adolescents caused by selective dysfunction of the pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve. Patients typically present with nasal regurgitation of liquids and feeds, hypernasal speech (nasal twang), and dysphagia due to impaired palatal movement. The condition is often considered post-infectious and has been associated with several viral and bacterial infections. We report a rare case of isolated bilateral palatal paralysis following an enteric fever in a 17-year-old girl. She presented with the sudden onset of

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare, immune-mediated demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system that typically follows viral or bacterial infections. There are only two known case reports that describe an association with ADEM post rickettsial infection. A female in her 80s presented with progressive neurological decline, including dysarthria, dysphagia and hemiparesis, following recent treatment in Hong Kong for rickettsial infection. Initial CT brain imaging showed a right subcortical infarct. She deteriorated with encephalopathy and respiratory failure, requiring
