[Postural tachycardia syndrome].

Erect posture could be a source of diverse chronic symptoms usually referred as orthostasis intolerance. Increasing number of patients suffering from orthostatic syndromes is recognized. Characterization and distinction of these orthostatic syndromes are based on the clinical presentation; including the typical history of orthostasis intolerance, and the unique hemodynamic responses on assuming upright posture. The diagnosis of postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) requires orthostatic heart rate acceleration in excess of 120 beat/min, or an absolute increase of > or = 30 beat/min, in the absen

Management of postural hypotension.

Several mechanisms counteract the gravitational forces on blood and maintain systemic arterial pressure and cerebral perfusion upon assumption of the upright posture. Failure of these mechanisms can lead to a postural decrease in blood pressure. Postural hypotension is defined as a reduction of at least 20 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure or at least a 10 mm Hg decrease in diastolic blood pressure. Acute postural hypotension is usually due to fluid or blood loss and responds well to fluid repletion. Chronic postural hypotension is due to drugs or endocrine or neurogenic disorders. A functional

Does abnormal head posture aid in amblyopia prevention?

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence and severity of unilateral amblyopia in patients with ocular abnormal head posture (AHP) and to investigate whether the presence of compensatory head posturing provides protection against the development of amblyopia. METHOD: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, the medical records of 1400 patients with various etiologies of AHP were reviewed. This cohort included individuals with congenital superior oblique palsy (SOP) (n = 758), Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) (n = 582), and Brown syndrome (n = 60), all of whom were candidates for surgical treatment

A computational study of forward head posture biomechanics.

Forward head posture (FHP) is a common postural deviation linked to musculoskeletal disorders and altered cervical spine biomechanics. This study used a validated finite element model (C0-T1, THUMS v4.2) to quantify the biomechanical effects of FHP, with validation against cadaveric data for sagittal balance and range of motion in flexion-extension, axial rotation, and lateral bending. Sagittal balance parameters, including craniovertebral angle (CVA), occipital protuberance to C2 (OP-C2), cervical lordosis (C1-C2 and C2-C7), greater occipital nerve (GON), and C2 nerve root (C2-NR), were measu

Cranio-cervical posture and rapid palatal expansion therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Connections between craniocervical posture (CCP) and changes in teeth position have already been demonstrated; however, the defined pathway of relationship is still not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate CCP modifications after rapid maxillary expansion therapy using rapid palatal expansion therapy (REP)/McNamara appliances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A consecutive series of 35 subjects, aged between 6 and 14 years, with no prior history of orthodontic treatment, and requiring skeletal expansion of the upper arch, were selected and analyzed. All patients were treated with REP

Biofeedback Posture Training for Adolescents with Mild Scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is characterized by uneven shoulders, spinal curvature, and uneven hips, and asymmetry in paraspinal muscle activities is common in AIS. This pilot study was aimed at examining the use of a surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback posture training program in adolescents with mild scoliosis (Cobb's angle < 30°) to attenuate asymmetry in paraspinal muscle activities and control the curve progression. Seven female adolescents (age, 12-14 years) with mild scoliosis (Cobb's angle < 30°) were recruited. The participants received 30 tailor-made sessions of sEM

Posture and Muscle Activity during Waste Collection Work.

The musculoskeletal load in waste collection has been examined through simulated assessment of pulling and pushing bins as well as lifting and throwing rubbish bags. With the onset of mechanization, many of these tasks do not exist and workers are faced with other loads not previously assessed. The purpose of this study was to quantify the postures and muscle activity during mechanized waste collection work. Three subtasks of mechanized waste collection were identified, namely driving, bin collection, and egress and access of the vehicle. Spinal, shoulder, and upper limb kinematics along with

Approach to Posture and Gait in Huntington's Disease.

Disturbances of gait occur in all stages of Huntington's disease (HD) including the premanifest and prodromal stages. Individuals with HD demonstrate the slower speed of gait, shorter stride length, and increased variability of gait parameters as compared to controls; cognitive disturbances in HD often compound these differences. Abnormalities of gait and recurrent falls lead to decreased quality of life for individuals with HD throughout the disease. This scoping review aims to outline the cross-disciplinary approach to gait evaluation in HD and will highlight the utility of objective measure

Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Provoked by Sleeping Posture.

A 96-year-old female with severe dementia complained of subacute onset of right arm swelling after sleep using her right arm as a pillow. Computed tomography and ultrasonography could not detect any significant findings. Nevertheless, her unilateral edema was similar to that of a venous disorder; therefore, we performed angiography of the brachial vein with the right arm in a normal position and in an abduction position; significant stenosis was seen in the latter position. We diagnosed her with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. This case was unique from the typical cases of venous thoracic out

Abnormal Head Posture in Unilateral Superior Oblique Palsy.

Purpose: To evaluate the manifestations and severity of abnormal head posture (AHP) in unilateral congenital and acquired superior oblique palsy (SOP) patients and to assess the effect of AHP on facial appearance. Patients and methods: This case series study was performed on 60 consecutive SOP patients, which consisted of 47 patients with congenital SOP and 13 patients with the acquired source. The exact type of AHP in congenital and acquired cases was determined based on direct observation. In addition, a close-up picture from 40 cm with habitual AHP was captured from all patients. For evalua

Neck posture is influenced by anticipation of stepping.

BACKGROUND: Postural deviations such as forward head posture (FHP) are associated with adverse health effects. The causes of these deviations are poorly understood. We hypothesized that anticipating target-directed movement could cause the head to get "ahead of" the body, interfering with optimal head/neck posture, and that the effect may be exacerbated by task difficulty and/or poor inhibitory control. METHOD: We assessed posture in 45 healthy young adults standing quietly and when they anticipated walking to place a tray: in a simple condition and in conditions requiring that they bend low

Muscular tension significantly affects stability in standing posture.

BACKGROUND: Muscular co-contraction is a strategy commonly used by elders with the aim to increase stability. However, co-contraction leads to stiffness which in turns reduces stability. Some literature seems to suggest an opposite approach and to point out relaxation as a way to improve stability. Teaching relaxation is therefore becoming the aim of many studies letting unclear whether tension or relaxation are the most effective muscular strategy to improve stability. Relaxation is a misleading concept in our society. It is often confused with rest, while it should be addressed during stress

Body posture of women after breast cancer treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Human body posture changes in the course of ontogenesis. The changes are brought about by both internal factors (illness) and external factors (injury). The negative consequences of a medical condition such as breast cancer, together with the treatment process, undoubtedly contribute to disturbance of body posture. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the type of body posture in women after treatment of breast cancer on the basis of anteroposterior spinal curves. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study involved a group of 51 (Group 1) women following treatment of breast cancer and a gro
