Biotransformation and metabolic responses of plants to cyanide were investigated using pre-rooted plants of weeping willows (Salix babylonica L.) grown hydroponically in growth chambers and treated with potassium cyanide. Cultured rat hepatocytes were treated with potassium cyanide, an inhibitor of cytochrome oxidase; valinomycin, a K+ ionophore; carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), a protonophore; and the ATP synthetase inhibitor oligomycin. An 18-year-old man ingested 975 to 1,300 mg of potassium cyanide in a suicide attempt. He was treated and survived the poisoning episode, but then had severe parkinsonian syndrome, characterized primarily by akinesia and rigidity. He died 19 months after the drug overdose. At autopsy, major destructive changes were found in the globus pallidus and putamen, whereas the melanin-containing zone of substantia nigra was intact. This is the first clinicopathologic report of parkinsonism as a result of cyanide poisoning.

Lipid peroxidation of brain lipids as determined by the conjugated diene method was observed in mice following administration of sublethal doses of potassium cyanide (KCN). Methanol and formate oxidation supported the assimilation of [14C]acetate by cell suspensions of Methylococcus capsulatus; oxidation of other primary alcohols, except ethanol, did not. The extent of [1-14C]acetate assimilation supported by methanol oxidation was decreased in the presence of primary alcohols, except ethanol. Potassium cyanide (0.33 mM) completely inhibited the oxidation of formate and its stimulation of [1-14C]acetate assimilation. The amount of [1-14C]acetate assimilation supported by methanol oxidation was significantly inhibited by cyanide.

Isolated nerve fibres of the median nerve of normal baboons and baboons kept on diets deficient in vitamin B12, and supplemented with potassium cyanide and potassium thiocyanate injections, were examined by the teased-fibre technique. Regression lines of internodal length on fibre diameter were obtained. Small differences between the groups were apparent but were of uncertain significance.
