Forty-eight budgerigar fanciers have been studied and twenty-five (52%) of these lost their serum budgerigar precipitins after cessation of avian exposure. Antigenicity of Schistosoma mansoni and S. japonicum eggs preserved in ethanol or acetone were assessed in a circumoval precipitin (COP) assay. In an attempt to establish a simplified circumoval precipitin (COP) test for the diagnostic purpose of schistosomiasis, air-dried eggs of both Schistosoma japonicum and S. mansoni were tested as antigens for this assay. Two proteins (21 and 48 kilodaltons) purified from endospore-spherule culture filtrates of Coccidioides immitis are identified as precipitin and complement-fixing antigens, respectively. This study was based on a sample of 3,065 farmers from a larger survey population of 12,056 Finnish farmers. Data were gathered in a postal survey conducted by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. Serum precipitins were determined by a microplate method of immune diffusion. Parasitological diagnostic methods for schistosomiasis lack sensitivity, especially in regions of low endemicity. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infections by antibody detection using the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA-IgM) and circumoval precipitin test (COPT).
