We report a 19-year-old man presenting to the department of Psychiatry for the evaluation of prominent behavioral symptoms associated with episodic headaches, with normal inter-episodic periods. A diagnosis of classic migraine with hypomanic aura was made. Other possible co-morbid or causative illnesses were excluded and preventive therapy with valproate was started due to the prominent affective symptoms as a part of the migranous aura. With this the frequency of headaches gradually decreased over the next four months. He was followed up for 2 years when he was found to be symptom-free. Recen

BackgroundPalliative psychiatry, which emphasizes improving quality of life and reducing suffering for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), has gained recognition internationally. Canadian psychiatrists' perspectives on palliative psychiatry remain under-explored. We adapted a survey created by Trachsel et al. on the acceptability of palliative psychiatry amongst German-speaking Swiss psychiatrists for the Canadian context to address this gap.MethodWe conducted a cross-sectional survey of Canadian psychiatrists (n = 69). We collected data on demographics, attitudes tow

With this manuscript we provide an overview of the prevalence, symptoms, risk factors, screening, support, and treatment for women with a traumatic childbirth experience or childbirth-related PTSD. This overview is based on both recent literature and the authors' clinical experiences from the fields of obstetrics, psychiatry and medical psychology to provide up-to-date knowledge about recognizing, preventing and treating CB-PTSD from a clinical perspective. We pay substantial attention to prevention as there are many things health care professionals can do or not do to contribute to a positive

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia have an increased risk of violent behavior.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to find predictive indicators of high risk of violent behavior among outpatients with psychosis.
METHODS: A total of 206 individuals were involuntarily ordered to hospital treatment as forensic patients after a forensic mental examination in Finland from 1995-1999. The information was collected from the registers of the National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs, and was obtained from 194 persons of which 184 had been accused of a violent crime.
RESULTS: Twenty percent (22/110

Factors and stressful life situations associated with suicidal hanging in a sample from India were studied with a view to explore preventability. Information was collected on consecutive suicidal hanging victims in a 2-year period from various sources including family members through psychological autopsy method. Out of 662 autopsies involving suicide during the study period, 104 had used hanging as the method. Age group of 21-30 years, married females, unmarried males, dowry related stress, unemployment, prolonged illness, failure in examinations, relationship and financial problems were asso

The authors point out clinically the risks of desinhibition in psychiatry. The classical risk of suicide by suppression of inhibition with melancholic patients is well known and prevented. The main risk for neurotic patients is that of trying to get desinhibition by means of toxicomanic behavior essentially though alcoholism. As far as psychoses are concerned, the risk seems to be mainly that the psychiatrist might misunderstand the concept of desinhibition and make a wrong utilization of desinhibitory treatments. At last, the "institutional" desinhibition constitutes a misunderstanding for ps

Psychiatric disorders arise from dysfunctions of neural systems that are deeply conserved across mammals, yet contemporary psychiatric classification remains fundamentally anthropocentric, relying heavily on subjective experience, symbolic language and self-report. This creates a major challenge for veterinarian psychiatrists and for comparative neuroscience: how can psychopathology be characterized across species when introspective access is unavailable? The domestic dog provides a uniquely powerful model for addressing this question, combining conserved affective and cognitive neural circuit

BACKGROUND: Mental illness and cognitive impairment are risk factors for poor dental health.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare the dental health of older patients attending out-patient clinics and day hospitals of old age psychiatry services (the psychiatry group, n = 103) with those attending general/geriatric medical services (the medical group; n = 99). Those living in care homes, and those with diagnosed mental illness (in the medical group) were excluded. A registered mental health nurse assessed mental and general health using validated and previously published in

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV2 global pandemic impacted participants in the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative (API) Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer's Disease (ADAD) clinical trial, who faced three stressors: 1) fear of developing dementia; 2) concerns about missing treatment; and 3) risk of SARS-CoV2 infection.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of psychological disorders among the participants of the API ADAD Colombia clinical study, treated by a holistic mental health team during the COVID-19 pandemic. The extent of use of mental health team services was explored considering different risk factor

BACKGROUND: 'Forward psychiatry' was introduced by the French Army in 1915 to stem the loss of troops to base hospitals. Also known by the acronym PIE (proximity to the battle, immediacy of treatment and expectancy of recovery, including return to duty), it was subsequently used by the British and Americans in both World Wars. The US Army used PIE techniques in Korea and Vietnam. Although widely accepted as an effective intervention, forward psychiatry is not amenable to random-controlled trials and only one controlled outcome study has been conducted.

From suicide risk prevention to treatment, the suicidal crisis process must be known to all carers to ensure appropriate and effective care. The psychiatry liaison team at the Nantes University Hospital advocates it with somatic teams through its liaison and consultation work. At the heart of this care network, the clinical expertise of the psychiatric liaison nurse educates nursing colleagues in identifying suicide risk. The nurse's clinical assessment and knowledge of the care system optimises the overall management and the path of patient care.

In clinical trials, blinding is usually employed to prevent bias that may be introduced due to the knowledge of the identity of the treatment codes. This bias could alter the conclusion of statistical inference on the treatment effect. The purpose of this article is to propose a method for analysing clinical data with breached blindness. The example regarding the study of the effectiveness of an appetite suppressant in weight loss in obese woman as described in Brownell and Stunkard (Am. J. Psychiatry 1982; 139:1487-1489) is used to illustrate the application of the proposed methods.

In psychiatry, clinical staging raises awareness of the need to understand disease trajectories and heterotypic continuity; it draws attention to individuals at risk of developing disorders, such as those with a family history or subsyndromal presentations; and it actively promotes greater attention to prevention strategies and interventions for individuals at ultra-high risk of developing a severe mental disorder. Staging paradigms have been increasingly applied in early intervention in psychoses, but there are issues in broadening the scope of clinical staging to the more prevalent affective

INTRODUCTION: Rapunzel's syndrome is the state of the gastric trichobezoar (hair ball) extending to the small intestine. Although it is seen very rarely, it is a psychiatric and mental illness especially in young women. We present here, a young female with recurrent trichotillomania.
CASE PRESENTATION: In a 24-year-old patient who underwent laparotomy due to recurrent trichobezoar, which completely filled the stomach and extended to the small intestine, caused perforation in two places in the small intestine, was removed by gastrotomy and enterotomy. One of the perforated areas was very close

Background: Comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder (PTSD-SUD) among women receiving substance use treatment are common. Few evidence-based interventions target PTSD-SUD, however, fewer are gender responsive. Mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP) has shown effectiveness for women with SUD, although it does not explicitly target PTSD. Integration of trauma-focused and gender-responsive treatments into MBRP may address the limited availability of PTSD-SUD interventions for women. This study assessed feasibility and acceptability of trauma-integrated MBRP (TI-MBRP

Psychotic or psychotic-like experiences and symptoms may precede and be indicative of later psychosis emergence. DSM-5 has introduced Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome (APS) as a condition for further study, arguing for its clinical validity and the need for identifying sub- threshold psychotic states. Early psychosis intervention has an already established role in reducing the Duration of Untreated Psychosis (DUP), delaying psychosis onset and relieving Ultra High Risk (UHR) individuals from their presenting symptoms. Pharmacological and mainly psycho-therapeutical approaches are suggested for th

AIMS: Patients with dual diagnosis are often excluded from clinical trials although more than half of all individuals with Bipolar Disorder have a substance abuse problem at some point in their lifetime, representing a high-risk clinical population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of quetiapine in the treatment of alcohol dependence comorbid with disorders characterized by high levels of mood and behavioral instability.
METHODS: Twenty-eight subjects, after a detoxification period, were orally treated with flexible doses of quetiapine for 16 weeks. At each

BACKGROUND: Women's risk of mental health conditions fluctuates across the lifespan with hormone-mediated reproductive transitions. Reproductive psychiatry, a relatively new subspecialty, focuses on preventing and treating these conditions throughout various reproductive stages. Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems that can process and integrate information across multiple modalities, including text, images, audio, and video. Although MLLMs have shown broad utility in healthcare, their potential in reproductive psychiatry remains largely un

Triple X (47,XXX) syndrome is a sex chromosome aneuploidy associated with learning disabilities, attentional deficits, and social impairments. Its psychiatric manifestations, particularly psychosis, remain underrecognized. This case report describes a 13-year-old girl with 47,XXX syndrome who developed two recurrent psychotic episodes during adolescence and ultimately achieved sustained remission under clozapine, illustrating the need for individualized, genetically informed care. The patient initially presented with persecutory delusions, auditory hallucinations, behavioral changes, and funct

Disaster preparedness in geriatric psychiatry was proposed on the basis of experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake. 1) Frail or demented elderly should be considered as a special population at risk for disaster victims and addressed in local disaster prevention programs. 2) To response to various psychiatric symptoms(delirium, BPSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and posttraumatic stress disorder) caused by medical conditions and rapid environmental changes due to disaster, linkage and coordination systems between psychiatric and medical sections should be established. 3) As a medium- an
