The progestogen-only pill (POP), minipill, is quite an effective second line contraceptive. Despite this, it is used relatively infrequently except during lactation. The main reason for this is that women on POP often have abnormal bleeding patterns, with an increased frequency of bleeding, lengthened cycles, breakthrough bleeding, spotting and prolonged bleeding. These menstrual disturbances are the most common quoted reason for discontinuation in up to 25% of users.

Desogestrel is a new, potent progestogen with very low androgenic properties. When used as a contraceptive, it is a strong antiovulatory compound, even at low doses. The clinical efficacy is as good as that of the old progestogens. It has a low incidence of side effects and complications, similar to other progestogens. It may have a role as an anti-androgen in women with hyperandrogenic symptoms in need of adequate oral contraception.

Factors associated with the occurrence of isolated hypospadias have been studied. We previously reported a secular trend association between hypospadias occurrence and progestagen use by the Hungarian population. Further study does not support that secular trend association. The effects of a number of steroids on the conversion of progesterone to 5alpha-dihydroprogesterone by hypothalamic and pituitary progesterone 5alpha-reductase have been investigated.
