To determine if serum prolactin levels were correlated with the level of depression in an ambulatory medical clinic population, prolactin was measured by immunoassay in all new medical patients completing the Langer Scale and the Popoff Index of Depression. Thirty-four of 71 patients (48%) were found to be depressed with a positive Popoff Scale. There was no difference in the prolactin levels in the depressed and nondepressed patients, who were matched for age and sex. Thus, depression, as seen in an ambulatory medical population, is not associated with increased prolactin release.

Nine pregnancies are described in patients with pituitary tumours. All patients had definite radiological evidence of a pituitary tumour and no evidence of acromegaly or Cushing's disease. The authors report a case of amenorrhoea with galatorrheoa due to a prolactin adenoma secondary to an inducer of ovulation (HMG and HCG) and in which pregnancy occurred. There was sudden progression of the adenoma with formation of a haematoma and the necessity for emergency surgery. In the light of this case, the risks and indications of inducers of ovulation in the sterile woman complaining of amenorrhoea with galactorrhoea are discussed.

Circadian profile and responsiveness of prolactin to TRH administration were examined in 21 women with ovulatory disturbances. The data were analyzed with reference to the clinical effectiveness of bromocriptine administration. The effect of unilateral cryptorchidism on prolactin binding to the testes was studied in the rat. Cryptorchidism was rendered surgically for 3 weeks and 3, 6 and 9 weeks later prolactin binding was measured in testicular homogenates.
