Prurigo nodularis of Hyde is an unusual disorder of unknown aetiology characterized by extremely pruritic nodules with well defined clinical and histopathological aspects. The literature on this disease is reviewed, focusing on the historical background, aetiology, pathogenesis, histopathology and ultrastructure, clinical aspects, differential diagnosis and therapeutic alternatives.

A case of actinic prurigo in Thailand.

Actinic prurigo is a separate entity from the polymorphous light eruption that affects American Indians. It has been reported mainly from North and South America, with only few reported cases from Britain or Asia. We report a case of actinic prurigo in a Thai girl who showed cheilitis and pruritic papules on exposed areas for three years. We were able to induce populovesicular lesions by three consecutive irradiations with 100 J/cm2 UVA and 2 minimal erythematous dose of UVB. However, three weeks after irradiation, a prurigo papule developed at the UVB irradiated site.

What is actinic prurigo in Britain?

Actinic prurigo (AP) belongs to the group of idiopathic photodermatoses sharing a predilection for occurring more commonly in females, and there is much controversy as to whether it is only a more severe form of polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) or whether it is a distinct entity in its own right. The condition is characterised by intensely itchy papules, plaques and nodules, along with excoriations and scars usually starting before puberty, and predominantly involves the sun-exposed areas although it may also affect covered sites. Seasonal exacerbations at the beginning of spring with improv…

Non-Atopic Chronic Nodular Prurigo (Prurigo Nodularis Hyde): A Systematic Review of Best-Evidenced Treatment Options.

BACKGROUND: Chronic nodular prurigo (CNPG) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease, characterized by intense and debilitating pruritus. The pathophysiology is not fully understood, and the condition is difficult to treat with no targeted therapies. The aim of this systematic review was to review the evidence of therapies for non-atopic CNPG and conduct a meta-analysis of the results. SUMMARY: We conducted a systematic review of the literature concerning effect of treatment for non-atopic CNPG. Due to few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and case series, the literature was unfortunately too…

Prurigo successfully treated with duloxetine hydrochloride.

Prurigo is a common skin disease characterised by erythematous macules and papules/nodules with severe pruritus. We report here two cases with treatment-resistant prurigo that were successfully treated with duloxetine hydrochloride, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. In vivo experiments with a mouse model of prurigo-like inflammation showed that duloxetine hydrochloride ameliorated not only scratching behaviours, but also skin inflammation. Duloxetine hydrochloride appears to be useful for treating prurigo via modulating itch signals and immune responses.

Superimposed segmental dermatitis with chronic prurigo.

Common acquired skin diseases with a polygenic background, such as lichen planus, may show linear or segmental manifestations of underlying … persisted for at least 6 years without complete remission, and was accompanied by preceding chronic prurigo on the extremities. Histological examination showed subacute spongiotic dermatitis and epidermal infiltration of CD4-positive cells. This case report presents a superimposed segmental dermatitis that arose based on systemic eczematous conditions, su …

Squamous cell carcinoma complicating prurigo nodularis.

Squamous cell carcinoma complicating ulcerative prurigo nodularis is described in 2 patients who were having prurigo nodularis on dorsum of the feet for duration of many years. Biopsy specimens from the ulcerating nodules showed features of squamous cell carcinoma. This finding has not been previously reported. Squamous cell carcinoma should be considered in the evaluation of long standing ulcerative lesion of prurigo nodularis especially when not responding to conventional therapy.

[Bullous pemphigoid simulation subacute simple prurigo].

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a bullous autoimmune disease of the elderly; it is characterized by tense bullae on both erythematous and otherwise apparently normal skin. Several clinical variants of BP have been described, and we now add our observations of two BP cases mimicking subacute prurigo. Both patients had suffered from intensely pruritic excoriated papules for several months before presentation. Blisters had never developed and did not occur during follow up. Histology showed changes of chronic dermatitis. In the serum of both patients, indirect immunofluorescence on NaCl-separated huma…

Lennert's lymphoma presenting as prurigo nodularis.

Lennert's lymphoma is a peripheral T-cell lymphoma that only rarely involves the skin. We present the case of a forty-two-year-old man who experienced severe pruritus for ten months. He was repeatedly diagnosed as having neurodermatitis and prurigo nodularis before subtle hematologic clues suggested, and subsequent examination of bone and lymph node biopsy specimens confirmed, the diagnosis of Lennert's lymphoma. This report describes the case and presents a brief review of Lennert's lymphoma.
