Unraveling psychosis risk in sexual minorities: temporal dynamics of social defeat and suspiciousness in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that sexual minorities are at higher risk for psychotic experiences, possibly due to repeated social defeat experiences. However, empirical research investigating this hypothesis is largely lacking. This study examined how experiences of "feeling excluded" and "not belonging" impact the prospective development of psychotic experiences in an adolescent sexual minority group, defined here as non-heterosexual attraction to others. METHODS: Experience sampling method (ESM) data from 1913 Flemish adolescents (aged 11-20) in the SIGMA study were analyzed. They

Social chronic pain: the affective response to social exclusion.

BACKGROUND: Social exclusion, whether due to physical isolation or the subjective perception of being ignored and unwanted, threatens the fundamental human need for social belonging and is experienced as social pain. While its detrimental effects on mood disorders are well documented, its impact on individuals living with chronic pain remains largely unexplored. This study investigates emotional responses to social exclusion in individuals with chronic pain (CPs) compared to healthy controls (HCs), considering the role of comorbid mood disturbances. It also examines whether behavioral and soci

Does Low Subjective Social Status Predict Cognitive Decline in Chinese Older Adults? A 4-Year Longitudinal Study From Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective social status (SSS), one's self-perceived social position, encompasses not only concrete socio-economic (SES) factors (e.g., income) but also intangible aspects of status (e.g., social capital). In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in SSS as a predictor of a vast array of health outcomes but very few studies examining effects on cognitive functioning. This study's main objective was to examine the association between SSS and long-term cognitive decline in older Chinese adults. DESIGN: A 4-year longitudinal study. SETTING: Hong Kong, China. PARTI

Learning Disabilities and Low Social Status: The Role of Peer Academic Reputation and Peer Reputation of Teacher Liking.

Although many studies have found that children with learning disabilities (LD) are less liked by peers than children without LD, the results are not unequivocal. In the present study, we investigated the social status (in terms of likeability and popularity) of children with LD by considering peer academic reputation and peer reputation of teacher liking. These variables are potentially important alternative factors for differences in social status between children with and without LD. Fifth-grade students ( n = 1,453; Mage = 10.60) in 58 classes in the Netherlands completed peer nominations f

Social Rejection and Alcohol Use in Daily Life.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have found that social rejection is associated with increases in negative affect, distress, and hostility. Fewer studies, however, have examined the impact of social rejection on alcohol use, and no known studies have tested whether the impact of social rejection by close others differs from social rejection by acquaintances in its association with subsequent drinking. METHODS: Participants completed event-contingent reports of their social interactions and alcohol use for 14 consecutive days on smartphones. Multilevel negative binomial regression models tested wheth

Does competition really bring out the worst? Testosterone, social distance and inter-male competition shape parochial altruism in human males.

Parochial altruism, defined as increased ingroup favoritism and heightened outgroup hostility, is a widespread feature of human societies that affects altruistic cooperation and punishment behavior, particularly in intergroup conflicts. Humans tend to protect fellow group members and fight against outsiders, even at substantial costs for themselves. Testosterone modulates responses to competition and social threat, but its exact role in the context of parochial altruism remains controversial. Here, we investigated how testosterone influences altruistic punishment tendencies in the presence of

Application of social identity theory in group therapy with stigmatized adults.

Social identity theory was applied in group therapy for adults with mild mental retardation. Social identity theory suggests that social group membership, also called collective identity, has an impact on self-esteem. Individuals will try to maintain self-esteem by viewing their social groups positively. This may not be possible for individuals who are members of a stigmatized group. However, it may be possible to enhance self-esteem by broadening one's awareness of collective identity. Furthermore, being able to positively view other individuals who are co-members of one's own stigmatized gro

From knowledge to competence: reflections on theoretical work.

In this paper, the author maintains that the language of the clinical situation is and should be that of common-sense psychology. The author argues that the languages of clinical theory and metapsychology are at a distinctive distance from clinical language. In fact, no theory could be produced, should this distance not be upheld. The function of clinical theory is to act as a corrective to the tendency of common-sense psychology to fall back into the banalities and prejudices of general ideology. In addition, the function of metapsychology is said to be that of scrutinising clinical theory an

Interpersonal stressors and negative affect in individuals with borderline personality disorder and community adults in daily life: A replication and extension.

Affective instability and interpersonal stress are key features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). They were shown to covary in the daily lives of patients in a recent ambulatory assessment study (Hepp et al., 2017) that observed comparatively larger positive associations between interpersonal stressors and negative affect in individuals with BPD than those with depressive disorders. The present study sought to replicate these findings, collecting data on hostility, sadness, fear, and rejection or disagreement events from 56 BPD and 60 community control participants for 21 days, 6 times

Fear of positive evaluation linked to aberrant neural processing of social acceptance and rejection: Evidence from ERPs and neural oscillations.

As a core feature of social anxiety disorder (SAD), the neural mechanisms through which fear of positive evaluation (FPE) influences the processing of social feedback remain unclear. This study employed the Social Judgment Paradigm (SJP) to compare neural activity in individuals with high and low FPE when they received expected or unexpected social acceptance or rejection feedback. Behavioral results indicated that the low FPE group exhibited a positive expectancy bias, whereas the high FPE group showed no such tendency. Neuroelectrophysiological findings revealed that unexpected feedback elic

Don't judge me: Psychophysiological evidence of gender differences to social evaluative feedback.

Human beings have a basic need for esteemed social connections, and receiving negative self-evaluative feedback induces emotional distress. The aim of the current study is to measure eye movements (a physiological marker of attention allocation) and pupillary responses (a physiological marker of cognitive and emotional processing) as online and objective indices of participants' reaction to positive/negative social evaluations from the same or opposite sex. Following the paradigm, subjective mood ratings and heart rate variability (HRV) - as an objective index of regulatory effort- were measur

Urban green and blue spaces and general and mental health among older adults in Washington state: Analysis of BRFSS data between 2011-2019.

A growing body of evidence highlights the significant effect of built environment features on mental and general health. This study examined the association between distance to and percentage of green and blue space measures and serious psychological distress, general health, and frequent mental distress among older adults living in urban ZIP codes in Washington state. Percentage of green space, particularly tree canopy and forest space, was significantly associated with better self-rated general health and reduced odds of serious psychological distress. Closer distance to blue space was assoc

Visual and nonvisual variables implicated in monovision wear.

BACKGROUND: Although both psychological and visual factors have been suggested to influence successful monovision contact lens wear, there has not been any documentation to support the relationship between psychological factors and the outcome of monovision wear. In our study, the relative importance of various visual and psychological factors were investigated in an attempt to provide a profile of a successful monovision wearer. METHODS: Participants, who had never worn monovision lenses were fitted with distance contact lenses for an adaptation period of 2 weeks; thereafter, 67 participants

Peer rejection as a mediator between socio-emotional function and internalizing symptoms in autistic adolescents.

Peer rejection is a distressing experience, which has been found to mediate the association between socio-emotional function and internalizing symptoms in neurotypical adolescents. To examine whether peer rejection statistically links socio-emotional function and internalizing symptoms in autistic adolescents, we measured their socio-emotional function (social skill, alexithymia, empathy), peer rejection, and internalizing symptoms. Autistic adolescents (N = 71), aged between 10 and 16 years (M = 12.73 years), completed questionnaires measuring peer rejection, socio-emotional function (alexith

Exploring Tobacco Use in Young Childhood Cancer Survivors: the Role of Social Acceptance, Workplace Environments, and Stress Reduction.

Recent advancements in childhood cancer treatment have significantly improved survival rates, yet survivors continue to face considerable morbidity and mortality, rendering them a vulnerable population. Tobacco use, linked to heightened cancer risk, is discouraged among survivors for long-term health preservation; however, many persist in its use, mirroring rates among their non-cancer peers. Through 25 in-depth interviews, we explored the interplay of perceived risk and social integration on tobacco use post-treatment among both Latine and non-Latine young adult survivors. Sixty percent of re

Childhood Shyness and Negative Social Cognitions in Emerging Adulthood: Adolescent Negative Peer Experiences as Moderators.

The purpose of this study was to use long-term longitudinal data to determine whether childhood shyness is associated with later negative social cognitions (rejection sensitivity and fear of negative evaluation) in emerging adulthood. Additionally, the prospective exacerbating roles of adolescent victimization and exclusion (self- and peer-reported) were examined. Participants were 119 Dutch individuals (50.5% male) from the Nijmegen Longitudinal Study, assessed at ages 9, 13, 16, and 21. Results showed a positive association between childhood shyness and emerging adult rejection sensitivity t

Early adolescent perceived friendship quality aids affective and neural responses to social inclusion and exclusion in young adults with and without adverse childhood experiences.

Friendships increase mental wellbeing and resilient functioning in young people with childhood adversity (CA). However, the mechanisms of this relationship are unknown. We examined the relationship between perceived friendship quality at age 14 after the experience of CA and reduced affective and neural responses to social exclusion at age 24. Resilient functioning was quantified as psychosocial functioning relative to the degree of CA severity in 310 participants at age 24. From this cohort, 62 young people with and without CA underwent functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to assess brain re

The Relevance of Emotion Regulation in Explaining Why Social Exclusion Triggers Paranoia in Individuals at Clinical High Risk of Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerability-stress models postulate that social stress triggers psychotic episodes in vulnerable individuals. However, experimental evidence for the proposed causal pathway is scarce and the translating mechanisms are insufficiently understood. The study assessed the impact of social exclusion on paranoid beliefs in a quasi-experimental design and investigated the role of emotion regulation (ER) as a vulnerability indicator and emotional responses as a putative translating mechanism. METHODS: Participants fulfilling criteria for clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR, n = 25), con
