Model Systems infrastructure of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG): toward an integrated, mechanism-based framework for mental health research.

Mental health is fragile and disorders are highly prevalent arising from complex interactions between genetic, developmental, psychological, social and environmental factors. The key mechanisms underlying resilience, vulnerability factors, brain repair systems, and recovery remain poorly understood, hindering the development of effective prevention and personalized treatment. The German Center for Mental Health (Deutsches Zentrum für Psychische Gesundheit, DZPG) addresses these challenges through a nationwide, interdisciplinary research network that integrates basic science with translational

Development and validation of the S-TIMHSS: a quality metric to inform and evaluate interventions to (re)build trust.

INTRODUCTION: Public acceptance of health messaging, recommendations, and policy is heavily dependent on the public's trust in doctors, health systems and health policy. Any erosion of public trust in these domains is thus a concern for public health as it can no longer be assumed that the public will follow official health recommendations. In response, the health policy and health services communities have emphasized a commitment to (re)building trust in healthcare. As such, measures of trust that can be used to develop and evaluate interventions to (re)build trust are highly valuable. In 202

Evaluation of the integrated disease surveillance and response system for infectious diseases control in northern Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Well-functioning surveillance systems are crucial for effective disease control programs. The Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy was developed and adopted in 1998 for Africa as a comprehensive public health approach and subsequently, Ghana adopted the IDSR technical guidelines in 2002. Since 2012, the IDSR data is reported through the new District Health Information Management System II (DHIMS2) network. The objective was to evaluate the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system in northern Ghana. METHODS: This was an observational study

Expansive bodies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease under mass supervision.

Negative health outcomes experienced by individuals and communities impacted by carceral systems have been documented across the social science and public health literature for some time. This research has tended to prioritize the health impact of incarceration, while outcomes associated with the largest system of correctional control, community supervision (e.g. parole and probation), have only recently begun to be examined. These examinations have tended to prioritize structural pathways, deploying a "social determinants of health" framework ubiquitous in public health research and policy ma

Diversity and Distribution of Fungal Infections in Rwanda: High Risk and Gaps in Knowledge, Policy, and Interventions.

Fungal infections (FIs) are spreading globally, raising a significant public health concern. However, its documentation remains sparse in Africa, particularly in Rwanda. This report provides a comprehensive review of FIs in Rwanda based on a systematic review of reports published between 1972 and 2022. The findings reveal a rich diversity of fungal pathogens, including Blastomyces, Candida, Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Microsporum, Pneumocystis, Rhinosporidium, and Trichophyton caused human infections. Candida infections predominantly affect the vagina mucosa, while Histoplasma duboisi was linke

Perspectives on Turnover and Workforce Shortages in Community Behavioral Health: Implications for Policy and Research.

There is a high rate of worker turnover in public mental health settings, contributing to a critical provider shortage with serious implications for mental healthcare access, particularly for low-income and underserved populations. These challenges unfold within strained public mental health systems characterized by chronic underfunding, high caseloads, and administrative demands, all of which exacerbate workforce instability. The primary objective of this study was to qualitatively examine public mental health workers' perspectives on factors influencing turnover and experiences of ongoing wo

Addressing the commercial determinants of unhealthy beverage exposure: a systems thinking approach.

BACKGROUND: The beverage industry plays an influential role in the US. Certain beverages, such as sugar-sweetened, have long been recognized as key contributors to poor population health with inequitable impacts. In response, multiple US initiatives have attempted to address these problems through public awareness campaigns and policies, such as taxes. Yet, the persistent and increasing reliance on unhealthy commercial products produced by the beverage industry suggests additional progress is needed. Leveraging a systems thinking approach, this study aimed to map out the complex forces limitin

The roles of sex and gender in women's eye health disparities in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, women are at a higher risk of developing vision impairment or a serious eye disease (such as age-related macular degeneration, thyroid eye disease, or chronic dry eye disease) than men. Disparities in eye diseases due to biology widen even further when considering factors such as social determinants of health; gaps in research data, literature, and policy; insufficient provider and patient education; and limitations in screening and treatment options. Sex and gender disparities in eye health are clinically under-addressed and burdensome on both patient quality

Ethnicity classification systems for public health surveys: experiences from HIV behavioural surveillance among men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Race and ethnicity classification systems have considerable implications for public health, including the potential to reveal or mask inequities. Given increasing "super-diversity" and multiple racial/ethnic identities in many global settings, especially among younger generations, different ethnicity classification systems can underrepresent population heterogeneity and can misallocate and render invisible Indigenous people and ethnic minorities. We investigated three ethnicity classification methods and their relationship to sample size, socio-demographics and sexual health indica

Maternal and infant health during the COVID-19 pandemic - A Pennsylvania Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant people are vulnerable to more severe outcomes of COVID-19 compared with their non-pregnant counterparts. Research is needed to systematically test the degree to which COVID-19 during pregnancy increases the risk for adverse maternal, perinatal, and infant health and development outcomes and whether social determinants of health or psychological/psychosocial health outcomes confound or intensify the risk. This protocol paper describes a prospective cohort study using electronic health record (EHR) and patient-reported data from four large health systems in Pennsylvania to e

Research-informed evidence and support for road safety legislation: findings from a national survey.

Public opinion is influential in the policymaking process, making it important to understand the factors that influence popular support or opposition to public health policies. Researchers and policymakers tend to agree that scientific evidence can inform decision-making, but this influence has not been explored sufficiently, especially in the area of injury prevention. This paper considers the potential for the communication of evidence-based research and public health data to influence opinion about legislation that could reduce road-related injury. We conducted a nationally-representative o

Psychological research on Alzheimer's disease in Pakistan: A systematic review of current trends and research gaps.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an escalating public health concern in low- and middle-income countries like Pakistan, with rising prevalence among the aging population. While global research has increasingly addressed the psychological dimensions of AD, Pakistan's contribution remains limited. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, examines the scope and focus of psychological research on AD in Pakistan. Eleven empirical studies published between 2014 and 2025 were included, revealing key themes such as caregiver burden, sociocultural influences, assessment tools,

The public health need and present status of a vaccine for the prevention of coccidioidomycosis.

Although the epidemiology of coccidioidomycosis has been well described, there is a paucity of recent data on the public health burden associated with this disease. Accordingly, California's Inpatient Hospital Discharge Data Set from 1997 to 2002 was used to calculate the incidence of hospitalization for coccidioidomycosis by county, year, age, race, ethnicity, and gender. The overall finding that coccidioidomycosis has a significant impact in endemic areas supports the conclusion that the need for a preventive vaccine is great. Investigators of the Valley Fever Vaccine Project (VFVP) have suc

Establishing a research informatics program in a public healthcare system: a case report with model documents.

While much is known about governance models for research informatics programs in academic medical centers and similarly situated cancer centers, community and public health systems have been less well-characterized. As part of implementing an enterprise research governance framework, leaders in the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services established a research informatics program, including research data warehousing. The strategy is focused on high-priority, patient-centered research that leverages the investment in health IT and an efficient, sustained contribution from 2 affiliated
