Gender Representation in Authorship of Original Research Publications in Medical Student Journals.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing proportion of female medical students globally, women remain a minority of authors in mainstream medical journals. Whether similar differences in gender representation extend to medical student journals (MSJs) remains unknown. In this bibliometric analysis, we explored female author representation in student-authored original research articles published in MSJs over the past decade. METHODS: Using a standardized search strategy, we identified English-language MSJs that are currently active and have been continuously operating for ≥10 years. We used a hierarc

Trends in Medical Student Publications in the Pass/Fail Licensing Examination Era.

OBJECTIVES: The transition of the US Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 to pass/fail scoring has intensified concerns about a research "arms race" among medical students seeking advantage in the residency application process. Over three graduating cohorts of medical students (classes of 2022-2024), the study aimed to determine whether medical students have increased participation in published scholarship and whether medical student publications exhibited diminishing quality, as measured by citations, authorship position, and publication type. METHODS: Data from a registry of recently enumer…

Ophthalmology journal article processing charges for publications in a post-COVID world.

PURPOSE: The period 2002-2021 saw an annual growth rate of 51.46% in listings of open access (OA) journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), with a steeper rate of growth corresponding with the onset of COVID-19. The introduction of OA and hybrid models, which give authors traditional subscription and OA options, may have led to increased article processing charges (APCs). This study aimed to analyze the APCs for ophthalmology journal articles after the COVID pandemic and analyze changes in publication modality and cost. METHODS: APC, frequency of publication, and impact factor

Office of the US Surgeon General Publications, 2001-2025: A Descriptive Analysis.

Since the release of the first Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health in 1964, the Office of the US Surgeon General (OSG) has shaped public health priorities in the United States through reports, advisories, and calls to action. This study presents a descriptive analysis of all 49 OSG publications produced from 2001 through 2025, with a focus on recurring topics and changes over time in the frequency of studied topics. Our purpose includes examining potential areas of topical overlap between the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) strategy and past federal health priorities. By categoriz…

The 50 Most-Cited Publications on Mandibular Condyle Fractures: A Bibliometric Study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular condyle fractures represent 16.5 to 56% of mandibular injuries and remain controversial in management. This bibliometric analysis evaluates the top 50 most-cited studies to identify research trends and gaps. We systematically searched the Web of Science for mandibular condyle fracture studies, analyzing the top most-cited 50 articles by citation counts, authorship, institutions, journals, and keywords using the VOSviewer for bibliometric coupling. FINDINGS: Studies (citations: 42 to 243) peaked in the 1990s to 2000s, declining after 2015. Germany 22% and the USA 12% led

Focus on pemphigus treatment publications: A bibliometric and visual analysis (1992-2022).

Pemphigus is a chronic recurrent disease in dermatology. Although it is not very common, its treatment has been an increasing concern in recent years because it is difficult and long-lasting. At present, there are many papers on pemphigus treatment, and to better understand the research trends and research frontiers of pemphigus treatment, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive systematic review and analysis. We combined bibliometric and visualization methods to analyze 1365 papers published in the Web of Science database from 1992 to 2022, including basic information about countries, inst

Institution representation in publications reporting mitral valve repair durability: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve repair durability currently plays a key role in operative decision making and in defining optimal surgical practice. However, mitral valve durability outcomes measures are not captured by national registries and limited to centers that publish their outcomes. In this study, we aim to describe the scope of institutions represented by reports describing durability outcomes after mitral valve repair within the contemporary literature. METHODS AND RESULTS: A scoping review of the literature was performed to extract abstracts potentially reporting mitral valve operation ou

The 100 Most Highly Cited Publications on Hearing Preservation for Vestibular Schwannomas.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular schwannomas are benign, slow-growing tumors that often reduce patient quality of life by compressing nearby nerves. Neurological function preservation is one of the indicators of treatment success, with hearing preservation being the most difficult to obtain. This paper provides a bibliometric analysis of hearing preservation in treating acoustic neuromas and a greater understanding of the most highly cited articles, which have enhanced our understanding of this topic. METHODS: Key terms of "acoustic neuroma," "vestibular schwannoma," and "hearing preservation" were quer

The prevalence of sickling abnormality in Oman: A review of relevant publications.

Sickle cell disease (SCD), caused by a mutation in the β-globin gene HBB, is widely distributed in malaria endemic regions.  The prevalence of sickle cell trait and disease reaches up to 4.8-6% and 0.2% respectively, which is the highest among the Arab Gulf states.  Omani population represents a variability of HbS genotype combinations with other Hb genotypes modify the clinical severity of the disease. The most prevalent sickling abnormality in Oman is Hb S/S (SCA) followed by Hb S/β-thalassemia. Omani children with SCD with high Hb F level had less severe disease. More than two-thirds of SCD

[Elderly patients in the emergency department: a selection of some recent publications].

Geriatric patients presenting to the ED are at high risk of mortality as well as of cognitive or functional decline. Thus, ED is an ideal spot for interventions that can improve their outcome. In this article, we summarize six recent studies, regarding the utilization of prognostic evaluation scores in geriatric patients presenting to the ED, adverse drug reactions, the significance of elevated troponin in patients who have remained on the ground after a fall, the rationale of performing head CT in patients without focal neurologic findings after a fall, the ideal treatment of a proximal femor
