Extended Complicated Punishment: Nursing Students' Experiences of a Transition Program.

BACKGROUND: A diverse nursing workforce depends on whether higher education is accessible to historically disadvantaged students and whether such students are supported to achieve success. In South Africa, the Extended Curriculum Program (ECP) is a transition degree program created to widen access and success for underrepresented groups, including those aspiring to become nurses. This qualitative study explored the experience of nursing students in an ECP at a South African university. METHOD: Written reflections were collected from 16 nursing students in the ECP. RESULTS: Four main themes e

Negative urgency and reward/punishment sensitivity in intermittent explosive disorder.

UNLABELLED: Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is the sole psychiatric diagnosis in which affective aggression is the cardinal symptom. Previous research has been equivocal with regard to the relationship between IED and impulsivity. This inconsistency may reflect the varied facets of impulsivity, with some aspects of impulsivity (e.g. negative urgency) as well as some overlapping, albeit distinct constructs (e.g. reward and punishment sensitivity) yet to be studied. METHODS: The present study compared individuals diagnosed with IED (n=81) with psychiatric controls (PCs; n=52) and healthy …

Disrupted brain circuitry for pain-related reward/punishment in fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: While patients with fibromyalgia (FM) are known to exhibit hyperalgesia, the central mechanisms contributing to this altered pain … alyses of the ventral tegmental area revealed a pattern of activity compatible with the encoding of punishment signals: activation during anticipation of pain and pain stimulation, but deactivation during anticipation of pain relief. In FM patients, however, activity in the ventral tegmental area during periods of pain and periods of anticipation (of both pa …

Sustainable institutionalized punishment requires elimination of second-order free-riders.

Although empirical and theoretical studies affirm that punishment can elevate collaborative efforts, its emergence and stability remain elusive. By peer-punishment the sanctioning is something an individual elects to do depending on the strategies in its neighborhood. The consequences of unsustainable efforts are therefore local. By pool-punishment, on the other hand, where resources for sanctioning are committed in advance and at large, the notion of sustainability has greater significance. In a population with free-riders, punishers must be strong in numbers to keep the "punishment pool" fro…

Harsh corporal punishment of Yemeni children: occurrence, type and associations.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the occurrence, type and associations of harsh corporal punishment in Yemen. METHODS: Caregiver and teacher reports were obtained on 1,196 Yemeni 7-10-year olds obtained by systematic random sampling of children in the 1st to 4th grades of urban and rural schools. Caregivers (86% mothers) reported on disciplinary practices, socio-familial background, and child psychopathology. Teachers reported on school performance and child psychopathology. RESULTS: More than half of the rural caregivers and about a quarter of the urban caregivers reported using harsh corporal punishm…

Amphetamine increases schedule-induced drinking reduced by negative punishment procedures.

RATIONALE: d-Amphetamine has been reported to increase schedule-induced drinking punished by lick-dependent signalled delays in food delivery. This might reflect a drug-behaviour interaction dependent on the type of punisher, because no such effect has been found when drinking was reduced by lick-contingent electric shocks. However, the anti-punishment effect of amphetamine could be mediated by other behavioural processes, such as a loss of discriminative control or an increase in the value of delayed reinforcers. OBJECTIVES: To test the effects of d-amphetamine on the acquisition and mainten…

Punishment cost affects third-parties' behavioral and neural responses to unfairness.

Third-party punishment plays a crucial role in fairness norm enforcement. The present study investigated how punishment cost would affect third-parties' behavioral and neural responses to unfairness using a modified Third-Party Dictator Game and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants acted as third-parties and decided how many monetary units (MUs) to invest to punish norm violations in two punishment cost contexts. Participants' every MU investment reduced dictators' payoff by 6 MUs in the low punishment cost context and 3 MUs in the high one. Participants' invested MUs ref…

Physical punishment, physical abuse, and child behavior problems in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Prior literature has demonstrated the associations of parental physical punishment with child behavior problems and increased risk of physical abuse. In South Korea, physical punishment is a common parenting practice. In 2021, legislative reforms eliminated legal grounds for parental physical punishment in South Korea. However, research on physical punishment, physical abuse, and child behavior problems in the Korean context is scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether physical punishment and physical abuse have unique associations with child behavior problems and whether phy…

Coordinated punishment of defectors sustains cooperation and can proliferate when rare.

Because mutually beneficial cooperation may unravel unless most members of a group contribute, people often gang up on free-riders, punishing them when this is cost-effective in sustaining cooperation. In contrast, current models of the evolution of cooperation assume that punishment is uncoordinated and unconditional. These models have difficulty explaining the evolutionary emergence of punishment because rare unconditional punishers bear substantial costs and hence are eliminated. Moreover, in human behavioral experiments in which punishment is uncoordinated, the sum of costs to punishers an…

Healthcare safety committee in Japan: mandatory accountability reporting system and punishment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The publication of To Err is Human by the Institute of Medicine highlighted the increased international concern about patient safety. Each country has developed its own medical adverse event reporting system. In 2007, the Japanese government attempted to establish a new accountability system in medicine, after an obstetrician was arrested for manslaughter. This paper reviews how this accountability system affected Japanese physicians' behavior, and describes different types of medical adverse event reporting systems. RECENT FINDINGS: In general, reporting of adverse event s

Controllability Determines the Incentive Effect of Reward and Punishment: EEG Evidence.

Although anticipating rewards and punishments facilitates behavioral performance, the role of controllability in shaping the integrative effects of these incentives remains unclear. To address this gap, we conducted two experiments using the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task and electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, aiming to investigate how controllability influences the effects of reward and punishment information on behavioral responses and their underlying neural mechanisms. In both experiments, the procedure followed a consistent structure: a cue indicating the reward and punishment …

Evolutionary dynamics in state-feedback public goods games with peer punishment.

Public goods game serves as a valuable paradigm for studying the challenges of collective cooperation in human and natural societies. Peer punishment is often considered an effective incentive for promoting cooperation in such contexts. However, previous related studies have mostly ignored the positive feedback effect of collective contributions on individual payoffs. In this work, we explore global and local state-feedback, where the multiplication factor is positively correlated with the frequency of contributors in the entire population or within the game group, respectively. By using repli…

[Viral failure in infants perinatally infected with HIV: A double punishment].

BACKGROUND: Considering the remarkable efficacy of the strategies for preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection (PMTCT), failures are rare in high-resource countries and deserve further investigation. Moreover, infants have been found to be at increased risk of viral failure. We analyzed the factors related to the children's environment, including maternal psychological factors that may be associated with viral failure in children diagnosed before the age of 1 year. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of all HIV-infected infants, born in France between July 2003 and July

Group Cooperation without Group Selection: Modest Punishment Can Recruit Much Cooperation.

Humans everywhere cooperate in groups to achieve benefits not attainable by individuals. Individual effort is often not automatically tied to a proportionate share of group benefits. This decoupling allows for free-riding, a strategy that (absent countermeasures) outcompetes cooperation. Empirically and formally, punishment potentially solves the evolutionary puzzle of group cooperation. Nevertheless, standard analyses appear to show that punishment alone is insufficient, because second-order free riders (those who cooperate but do not punish) can be shown to outcompete punishers. Consequently…

Collective punishment is more effective than collective reward for promoting cooperation.

Collective punishment and reward are usually regarded as two potential mechanisms to explain the evolution of cooperation. Both scenarios, however, seem problematic to understand cooperative behavior, because they can raise the second-order free-rider problem and many organisms are not able to discriminate less cooperating individuals. Even though they have been proved to increase cooperation, there has been a debate about which one being more effective. To address this issue, we resort to the N-player evolutionary snowdrift game (NESG), where a collective punishment/reward mechanism is added …

Childhood physical punishment or maltreatment and partnership outcomes at age 30.

Childhood physical abuse is known to be associated with impaired outcomes in adulthood (e.g., particularly for mental and physical health). However, relatively little is known about adult partnership outcomes for those exposed to childhood physical punishment or maltreatment. This study aims to examine the associations between childhood physical punishment or maltreatment and partnership outcomes at age 30. This investigation analyzed data from a birth cohort of more than 900 New Zealand adults studied to age 30. At ages 18 and 21, cohort members reported on the extent of exposure to childhood…
