Expansion of the Knockdown Resistance Frequency Map for Human Head Lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) in the United States Using Quantitative Sequencing.

Pediculosis is a prevalent parasitic infestation of humans, which is increasing due, in part, to the selection of lice resistant to either the pyrethrins or pyrethroid insecticides by the knockdown resistance (kdr) mechanism. To determine the extent and magnitude of the kdr-type mutations responsible for this resistance, lice were collected from 138 collection sites in 48 U.S. states from 22 July 2013 to 11 May 2015 and analyzed by quantitative sequencing. Previously published data were used for comparisons of the changes in the frequency of the kdr-type mutations over time. Mean percent resis…

Molecular detection of insecticide resistance markers in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) populations from Haiti.

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) mosquitoes are the primary vectors of several arboviruses of major public health importance, including dengue virus, Zika virus, chikungunya virus, and yellow fever virus. In Haiti, Ae. aegypti mosquitoes are highly abundant and linked to the transmission and spread of these pathogens. As the use of pesticides for control of mosquitoes increases, there is heightened selection pressure for insecticide-resistant (IR) mosquitoes, mitigating the efficacy of pesticides and leading to an increased risk of continual pathogen transmission. To this end, active surveillanc

Suspected chlorfenapyr poisoning in a horse.

Chlorfenapyr is a pesticide that interferes with mitochondrial function, leading to cell death and mortality. Although poisoning is primarily documented in humans and dogs, it can result in severe clinical signs, including sweating, respiratory distress, and neurological dysfunction. This report describes the clinical and laboratory findings of a horse with suspected accidental intoxication with chlorfenapyr. A 4-year-old Quarter Horse mare was referred to the veterinary hospital with signs of excessive sweating, hyperthermia, tachypnea, muscle fasciculation, and fearful facial expression. The

Case Report.

The illegal practice of combining organophosphates (OPs) with other compounds such as carbamates and pyrethroids, creating 'streetpesticides', is common in South Africa. These agents contain mostly unknown quantities of unregulated toxins and contribute to atypicaland unpredictable clinical presentations following human ingestion. We present such a case in a patient with intentional rodenticideingestion. The initial presentation in the emergency department was a classic cholinergic toxidrome, and clinical resolution was achievedafter provision of atropine. This was followed 12 hours later by a

Lambda-cyhalothrin and its common metabolite differentially modulate thyroid disruption effects in Chinese lizards (Eremias argus).

Although the thyroid effects of pyrethroids on non-target organisms have been well studied, research on the toxic effects of pyrethorid metabolites is still limited. In this study, a type of representative Chinese lizards was used as the model and exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (PBA) through cultivation on 3 and 15 μg/g soil to evaluate and compare their disruption effects on lizard hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. The alterations occurred in lizards were examined through histopathology analyses, hormone level

The genetic architecture of target-site resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in the African malaria vectors Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles coluzzii.

Resistance to pyrethroid insecticides is a major concern for malaria vector control. Pyrethroids target the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC), an essential component of the mosquito nervous system. Substitutions in the amino acid sequence can induce a resistance phenotype. We use whole-genome sequence data from phase 2 of the Anopheles gambiae 1000 Genomes Project (Ag1000G) to provide a comprehensive account of genetic variation in the Vgsc gene across 13 African countries. In addition to known resistance alleles, we describe 20 other non-synonymous nucleotide substitutions at appreciable po

Histopathologic and genotoxic effects of deltamethrin on marsh frog, Pelophylax ridibundus (Anura: Ranidae).

It is known that amphibians inhabiting agricultural areas are constantly exposed to chemicals such as insecticides. Deltamethrin, a type II pyrethroid insecticide, is widely used in the world. The present study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of different concentrations (0.625, 1.25, and 2.50 mg/kg body wt) of orally applied deltamethrin to marsh frog (Pelophylax ridibundus) after 96 h of treatment. The histopathological abnormalities in liver, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney tissues were evaluated with quantitative analyses. In liver, increase of melanomacrophagic aggregates, non-ho

Identification and characterization of striking multiple-insecticide resistance in a Tetranychus urticae field population from Greece.

BACKGROUND: Tetranychus urticae is a notorious crop pest with a worldwide distribution that has developed resistance to a wide range of acaricides. Here, we investigated the resistance levels of a T. urticae population collected from an ornamental greenhouse in Peloponnese, Greece, and analyzed its resistance mechanisms at the molecular level. RESULTS: Toxicological assays showed resistance against compounds with different modes of action, with resistance ratios of: 89-fold for abamectin; > 1000-fold for clofentezine; > 5000-fold for etoxazole; 27-fold for fenpyroximate and pyridaben; 20- and

Field evolved resistance to pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, organophosphates and macrolides in Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus) and Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) from China.

Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus) and Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) are the predominant pests coexisting on wheat plants. In this study, the susceptibilities of 29 R. padi and 30 S. avenae populations from 15 provinces in China to pyrethroids (beta-cypermethrin and bifenthrin), neonicotinoids (imidacloprid and thiamethoxam), organophosphates (omethoate and chlorpyrifos) and macrolides (avermectin) were determined during 2018-2019. The median lethal insecticide concentrations (LC50) indicated that R. padi was more sensitive than S. avenae to most of the insecticides. Monitor results showed that most

Photodegradation kinetics, mechanism and aquatic toxicity of deltamethrin, permethrin and dihaloacetylated heterocyclic pyrethroids.

Photochemical methods attracted much research interests for their high-efficiency and low secondary pollution. Decomposition of synthetic pyrethroids, the fourth major group of insecticides in use worldwide, was also of great significance due to their possible environmental risks. The photodegradation of deltamethrin, permethrin and dihaloacetylated heterocyclic pyrethroids in methanol/acetone = 9/1 (by volume) by a 400 W mercury lamp was examined. The t1/2 of tested pyrethroids was less than 25 min, except for cis-permethrin with a t1/2 of up to 50 min. The trans-isomer of permethrin and comp

Targeted release mechanism of λ-cyhalothrin nanocapsules using dopamine-conjugated silica as carrier materials.

Based on the specific binding between the receptors and ligands, novel targeted nanocapsules were prepared by using silica covalently bonded with dopamine to increase the insecticidal efficacy of λ-cyhalothrin. The targeted release mechanism of λ-cyhalothrin nanocapsules (NC) nanocapsules was verified by enzymatic analysis, fluorescent marking method and high performance liquid chromatograph. The results showed NC had uniform particle size (800 nm) and approximately 31% (w/w) loading efficiency of λ-cyhalothrin. The stability of λ-cyhalothrin in nanocapsuels was improved under different pH and

The control of lice on domestic livestock.

Trials showed that existing treatments for lice on cattle were not completely effective. A few long-nosed lice, Linognathus vituli survived treatment with louse powder containing gamma HCH (BHC), amitraz spray and Prolate pour-on (20% phosmet). One treatment with cyhalothrin or cypermethrin gave complete control of all four species of lice infesting cattle in the UK. These synthetic pyrethroids were applied as sprays containing 250 p.p.m. and 1000 p.p.m. of active constituent, respectively. Another synthetic pyrethroid, deltamethrin was very effective against all species of cattle lice when ap

Routine insecticide regimes restructure flower-inhabiting thrips on star fruit: suppression of Megalurothrips typicus, resilience of Thrips levatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Routine agrochemical regimes are pervasive in tropical perennial crops, yet their ecological consequences remain poorly understood. We examined how nonselective insecticide exposure, arising from routine crop protection, shapes species composition, phenology, and population regulation of 2 co-occurring thrips, Megalurothrips typicus Bagnall and Thrips levatus Bhatti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.). We compared a sprayed commercial farm with an unsprayed research farm, combining weekly inflorescence sampling with soil emergence trapping, to track flower-infestin

Gaining Biological Insights Into Deltamethrin-Induced Toxicity and Resistance at the Molecular Level.

Deltamethrin (DM), a type II pyrethroid, is one of the most widely used insecticides around the world. The link between diseases including obesity, neurodevelopmental disorders, liver fibrosis and DM treatment has been elucidated in organisms that exposed DM. Also, in aquatic organisms, hepatopancreatic necrosis disease, impaired cellular development, and decreased mobility could be related to DM treatment for pond cleaning and fending off arthropods causing diseases such as Caligidosis. Apart from that, DM resistance in target organisms has been a staggering issue due to the prevalence of DM-
