OBJECTIVE: To investigate the sufficiency of comprehensive therapy in the preservation of laryngeal function of carcinoma of pyriform sinus.
METHOD: Since 1986, 33 cases of pyriform sinus carcinoma were treated, the clinical stages were as follows: stage I 2 cases, stage II 9 cases, stage III 12, stage IV 10. The induced chemotherapy agents were cisplatin, methotrexate and pingyangmycin. Surgical treatment include local dissection of tumor, partial hypopharynx and partial larynx dissection. All patients were received postoperative radiotherapy.

A pyriform sinus fistula can cause acute thyroiditis or recurrent infection in the neck. This fistula is believed to be a remnant of the branchial apparatus, although its origin has yet to be pinpointed. The spatial distribution of C cells in the thyroid gland was mapped by immunohistologic method in four patients with a pyriform sinus fistula. A 13-year-old boy who originally presented with a left neck abscess rapidly developed a mediastinal abscess and empyema. Repetitive esophagography for the persistent mediastinal abscess revealed the existence of a pyriform sinus fistula. It was thought that infection of the pyriform sinus fistula precipitated a retropharyngeal abscess which continuously extended to the mediastinum. To our knowledge, no other such case has ever been reported and we present this unusual case herein, followed by a short review of the related literature.

One hundred fifty-five patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus were treated with curative intent at the University of Florida between 1962 and 1984. All patients were staged according to the AJCC staging system and had a minimum 2-year follow-up; 84% had at least 5 years of follow-up. The locoregional control rates, the incidence of treatment-related complications, and survival rates are presented for radiotherapy as well as for surgery, with or without adjuvant irradiation.

Adenoid cystic tumors or cylindromas are malignant tumors typical of salivary tissue which often develop in minor salivary glands and, according to some authors, also in common mucosa glands. Acute suppurative thyroiditis is rare in childhood. It presented in two clinically euthyroid children over a 2-year period. Repeated drainage for recurrent abscesses was necessary in one child. Thyroiditis without abscess was present in the second.
