Properties of local synapses were analyzed in lobus parolfactorius (LPO; avian homologue of caudate-nucleus) of quail chicks by using slice preparations in vitro. Field-potential extracellular and whole-cell intracellular recordings revealed excitatory synaptic inputs converging from dorsal and ventral regions within LPO. With exogenous dopamine (100 microM) in the perfusate, synchronized conditioning stimulation induced biased changes in the dorsal and the ventral inputs; potentiation in the dorsal input and depression in the ventral input in average. On the other hand, de-synchronized condit

A line of Japanese quail selected for high plasma cholesterol is highly susceptible to diet-induced atherosclerosis. Lymphocyte epitopes recognized by mouse anti-chicken monoclonal antibodies (c-mAb), TCR-1, TCR-2, TCR-3. CD-3, CD-4, CD-8, and BU-1a/b were reacted with spleens from quail selected for high (HL) and low (LL) plasma total cholesterol and their nonselected controls (CL). Cross reactivity to c-mAb and effect of line and gender were immunohistochemically evaluated. Chicken spleens were positive controls. Quail were immunologically stimulated with either sheep red blood cells (SRBC)

Birds have a well-developed centrifugal pathway from the isthmo-optic nucleus to the retina. In the present study, receptive-field properties of the isthmo-optic (IO) neurons and suppressive effect of remote stimuli far beyond the "classical" receptive fields were examined electrophysiologically in the Japanese quail. Receptive fields emitting more than half the maximal ON-OFF response to a small spot of light measured 4.3+/-1.9 deg (n = 37) in diameter. A stationary spot of light was presented at a remote point (35-76 deg) away from the receptive-field center, besides a stimulus for the recep

The single and combined effects of methylmercury and Arochlor 1260 were investigated in experimental quail treated chronically with the two compounds at low and high doses. A series of metabolic and biochemical biomarkers were evaluated together with mercury and PCB accumulation to pinpoint the effects of treatment with one or both chemicals. Methylmercury alone was associated with a decrease in serum cholesterol. Less PCBs were accumulated in tissues when Arochlor 1260 was combined with methylmercury than when the former was administered alone. Liver monooxygenase (MFO) activity was depressed

The avian pineal organ contains a circadian oscillator that can drive a daily rhythm of melatonin synthesis. In some avian species the pineal organ may act, via the cyclic release of melatonin, as a pacemaker within a multioscillator circadian system. The routes by which light entrains the pineal melatonin rhythm were investigated in the Japanese quail. A 'patching' protocol was used to expose directly either the eyes or the pineal to a light-dark cycle while the rest of the bird was exposed to constant light. The results show that the pineal melatonin rhythm can be entrained (1) by light perc

An embryonic lethal mutant was found in Japanese quail and named "stumpy limb (SL)". All SL embryos died at pre-hatching stages, showing brachycephaly, a thickened neck, short upper and lower beaks, and short and thick extremities, while their body length was similar to that of the normal embryos. Observations on the skeleton revealed a globular skull, unusual curvature of the Processus palatinus maxillaris of the upper beak, and shortening and thickening of the appendicular bones. Some embryos showed a bending of the humerus, femur and/or tibiotarsus. Abnormality was more conspicuous in the l

Quercetin, a natural flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, shows promise as a feed additive that reduces antibiotic use and enhances animal production and organ health. This study investigated the protective effects of dietary quercetin against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced liver injury in quail and screened for its optimal dietary concentration. Quails were fed a basal diet supplemented with different concentrations of quercetin (0.02 %, 0.04 %, and 0.08 %). Liver injury was then induced via an intraperitoneal LPS injection in the late experimental stage. Results sho

Food stands as a pivotal environmental element that exerts a profound influence on the survival of animals. Faced with food shortages, animals need to develop morphological, physiological, and behavioral strategies to improve their survival adaptability. Animals undergoing fasting tend to mobilize the reserved substances in the body to meet the energy needs for metabolism. In the present investigation, we assessed the influence of prolonged fasting on various physiological parameters related to fat catabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and protein catabolism in female Japanese quails (Coturnix

A study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional benefits of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) in quail nutrition as an additive containing antioxidant compounds such as silymarin. A total of 300, 14-d old Japanese quail chicks were randomly allotted to 5 treatments with 6 replicates and 10 birds each. The experimental diets, including a basal diet and 4 diets containing 10, 20, 30, and 40 g/kg milk thistle, were used from d 14 to 35 and spline and segmented models were applied to fit data. The optimized values of dietary milk thistle (breakpoints) for optimum amounts of serum albumin (ALB), to

Rhabdomyolysis is a common cause of acute kidney injury, featuring muscle pain, weakness and dark urine and concurrent laboratory evidence of elevated muscle enzymes and myoglobinuria. Rhabdomyolysis is often seen in elderly and frail patients following prolonged immobilization, for example after a fall, but a variety of other causes are also well-described. What is unknown to most physicians dealing with such patients is the fascinating history of rhabdomyolysis. Cases of probable rhabdomyolysis have been reported since biblical times and during antiquity, often in the context of poisoning. E

Rhabdomyolysis (R) is a complex condition involving the rapid dissolution of damaged or injured skeletal muscle. This leads to the direct release of intracellular components, including myoglobin, creatine kinase, aldolase, and lactate dehydrogenase, as well as electrolytes, into the bloodstream and extracellular space. Clinically, R shows a triad of symptoms: myalgia, limb weakness, and myoglobinuria without hematuria, while myoglobin has been recognized as playing a part in the development of acute kidney injury. Coturnism is a relatively rare disease, mostly found in the European countries b

Central-to-peripheral migration of QH1-positive microglial precursors occurs in the vitrealmost part of the developing quail retina. This study shows that some QH1-positive ameboid cells with morphological features of migrating cells are already present in the margin of the retina before microglial precursors migrating centrally to peripherally arrive in this zone. Because the earlier cells are oriented parallel to the ora serrata, we deduce that some microglial cells migrate circumferentially in the margin of the retina, whereas other microglial precursors migrate from central to peripheral z

1. 14C-Flocoumafen, administered to Japanese quail as a single oral or i.p. dose, was rapidly and extensively eliminated in excreta; most was eliminated within 24 h. Extensive metabolism of the rodenticide was seen, with at least 8 metabolites detected; unchanged flocoumafen comprised 9% dose. The elimination kinetics and metabolic profiles were qualitatively similar after oral and i.p. dosing. 2. The major metabolites (60% dose) were labile to beta-glucuronidase, liberating aglycones with identical chromatographic mobilities to those of the unchanged flocoumafen isomers. 3. Radioactivity was

In the quail, a sex-linked albino mutation is associated with buphthalmic glaucoma. This progressive disorder is detectable 3 to 6 months after hatching. Its development leads to a degeneration of retinal projection according to a relatively orderly sequence progressing from the tegmentum to the tectum and from the pretectum to the thalamus. We suggest that the degeneration of visual axons might be produced by mechanical compression resulting from an increase in intraocular pressure.

The disposition and the fate of a [14C]toxaphene preparation was studied in adult and juvenile female Japanese quail. The distribution of [14C]toxaphene in the body is dominated by high concentrations of radioactivity in the adipose tissue and the egg yolk, and, especially in juvenile birds, in the bone marrow. The [14C]toxaphene compounds present in the fat tend to be less polar than the parent [14C]toxaphene. More than half of the radioactive dose is excreted via the droppings, eggs, and preen gland within a few days, with biliary excretion playing a major role. The main part of the radioact

The gastrin cells of the Japanese quail were studied histologically and immunocytochemically. Cells reacting with antiserum to gastrin (gastrin cells) were demonstrated by the peroxidase-labelled antibody method and showed brownish cytoplasm. They also were stained argyrophil by the Grimelius' silver method. Gastrin cells were found in the epithelium of the pyloric region and small intestine and not in any other regions. They were the most numerous in the pyloric region (382.14 +/- 12.77/1.25mm2), next in the ileum (3.79 +/- 1.24/1.25mm2) and duodenum (2.93 +/- 0.62/1.25mm2), and the least in

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus farciminis and Salvia hispanica oil, alone or in combination, on growth performance, antioxidant status, cecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) profiles, and bone biomechanical properties in Japanese quails. These natural antibiotic alternatives were selected because L. farciminis supports the intestinal barrier, while chia oil-rich in omega-3s and phenolic compounds-modulates antioxidant defense and mineral bioavailability.
METHODS: A total of 216 one-day-old Coturnix coturnix japonica chicks were randomly assigned to four groups: co

Seasonal rhythms in photoperiod are a predictive cue used by many temperate-zone animals to time cycles of lipid accumulation. The neuroendocrine regulation of seasonal energy homeostasis and rheostasis are widely studied. However, the molecular pathways underlying tissue-specific adaptations remain poorly described. We conducted two experiments to examine long-term rheostatic changes in energy stability using the well-characterized photoperiodic response of the Japanese quail. In experiment 1, we exposed quails to photoperiodic transitions simulating the annual photic cycle and examined the m

High mortality in bobwhite quail chicks (Colinus virginianus) (35%-85%) was reported from a grower flock in Iowa during July and August of 2022. Two diagnostic submissions of dead, 3-day-old quail chicks were received. Postmortem examination revealed multifocal, pinpoint, pale tan foci in the liver of all birds. Histologic examination revealed moderate to severe, acute, multifocal, random necrotizing hepatitis with multinucleated cells and dystrophic mineralization. Metagenomic sequencing of liver detected orthoreovirus. A high level of avian reovirus (ARV) RNA was identified by real-time reve

Avian influenza A H5N6 virus is a highly contagious infectious agent that affects domestic poultry and humans in South Asian countries. Vietnam may be an evolutionary hotspot for influenza viruses and therefore could serve as a source of pandemic strains. In 2015, two novel reassortant H5N6 influenza viruses designated as A/quail/Vietnam/CVVI01/2015 and A/quail/Vietnam/CVVI03/2015 were isolated from dead quails during avian influenza outbreaks in central Vietnam, and the whole genome sequences were analyzed. The genetic analysis indicated that hemagglutinin, neuraminidase, and polymerase basic
