On April 26, 1986, a serious reactor accident occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A total radioactivity of 2 x 10(18) becquerel, i.e. 3.5% of the reactor inventory were released spreading throughout Europe. Radioactive tracers were iodine 131 (with a half-life of 8 days) and caesium 137 (with a half-life of 30 years). Measurements made in Magdeburg by the Institute of Hygiene on May 5th after a heavy thunderstorm indicated a considerable radioactive contamination. Measurements revealed 75,000 bq/kg in grasses, 44,000 bq/litre in storm water and 40,000 bq/kg in garden soil, however,

Small high-activity radioactive particles of nominal diameter ranging from approximately 1 mm down to several microm have been a radiological concern over the last 30 years in and around European and American nuclear reactor facilities. These particles have often been referred to as 'hot particles'. The 'hot particle problem' came into prominent concern in the late 1960s. The potential carcinogenic effects in lungs as the result of irradiation by discrete small particles containing alpha-emitting radionuclides, particularly (239)Pu, were claimed by some to be several orders of magnitude greate

The efficient removal of uranium (U(Ⅵ)) from nuclear wastewater presents a significant challenge due to the high concentrations of uranium and various interfering ions. In this study, we developed and used metal-organic framework hydrogel (MOFH) as a highly efficient adsorbent for uranium removal. The MOFH, synthesized with ferrocyanides and functional groups (Fe(Ⅱ)-CN-Fe(Ⅲ), OH, -COOH, and -NH2), exhibited good chemical stability, large separation capacity, and high selectivity. The hydrogel's three-dimensional network, crosslinked with chitosan and alginic acid, significantly enhanced uraniu

Iodized X-ray contrast media (XRC) for medical applications are responsible for the high concentration of AOX (halogenated organic compounds adsorbable on activated carbon) in hospital wastewater exceeding the legal German discharge limit. The refractory properties of these substances lead to an accumulation in the natural waterbody. The elimination of contrast media from hospital wastewater by photochemical oxidation with hydrogen peroxide was investigated. The mechanism and the kinetics of the degradation of XRC were examined. These experiments demonstrate that a complete removal of the orga

Developing core-shell structured magnetic nanocomposite to remove uranium from wastewater is of importance for protecting the environment while ensuring the sustainable use of nuclear energy. Herein, a novel bifunctional core-shell magnetic polymer nanocomposite Fe3O4/P (MBA-BMP-AA) was developed by distillation-precipitation polymerization of N, N'-methylene diacrylamide (MBA), bis(2-methacryloxyethyl) phosphate (BMP) and acrylic acid (AA) on the surface of Fe3O4 modified by KH570 for disposing wastewater containing uranium. The controlled experiments and characterizations verified the collab

Cleanup of former U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear weapons production facilities involves potential exposures to various hazardous chemicals. We have collaboratively developed and piloted an exposure database and surveillance system for cleanup worker hazardous chemical exposure data with a cleanup contractor at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS). A unique system feature is the incorporation of a 34-category work task-coding scheme. This report presents an overview of the data captured by this system during development and piloting from March 1995 through August 1998.

Conventional analysis of RNA products synthesized by bacterial RNA polymerase (RNAP) in in vitro transcription assays relies on radioactive labeling, followed by separation of labeled RNAs by denaturing urea-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). This approach provides excellent resolution across a wide range of RNA lengths (from 2 nt to several hundred nucleotides), but the use of radioisotopes requires specialized facilities, strict waste-disposal procedures, and is often restricted. To circumvent these limitations, we adapted a standard in vitro transcription assay for use with the Agil

Bioremediation of uranium-contaminated environments using native bacteria shows great promise. While Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens) is a known uranium reducing bacterium, the mechanisms and adaptability of indigenous strains from uranium mine tailings remain unexplored. This study isolated a dominant indigenous strain of S. putrefaciens and employed a combined genomic and spectroscopic approach to elucidate its unique uranium fixation mechanism. Microbial diversity analysis confirmed the dominance of Shewanella in the oligotrophic and radioactive tailings. Whole-genome sequencing re

Radioiodine (mainly 129I and 131I) is known to be dangerous nuclear waste due to its high toxicity, fast mobility and long radioactive half-life. As an emerging class of novel porous organic polymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have demonstrated tremendous application potential in the field of radioactive iodine capture because of their high specific surface area and tunable pore structure. Herein, three π-conjugated pyrene-based COFs, namely PyTTA-BPDA-COF, PyTTA-BPY-COF, and PyTTA-BT-COF, have been successfully prepared and used as highly efficient adsorbents for iodine capture. The

Zeolites are aluminosilicate solids bearing a negatively charged honeycomb framework of micropores into which molecules may be adsorbed for environmental decontamination, and to catalyse chemical reactions. They are central to green-chemistry since the necessity for organic solvents is minimised. Proton-exchanged (H) zeolites are extensively employed in the petrochemical industry for cracking crude oil fractions into fuels and chemical feedstocks for other industrial processes. Due to their ability to perform cation-exchange, in which the cations that are originally present to counterbalance t

A diglycolamide (DGA)-functionalized silica-based extraction chromatography resin was synthesized and evaluated for the separation of trivalent actinides from nitric acid medium. Batch sorption studies showed strong affinity of the resin toward Am3+, with distribution coefficients (Kd) exceeding 5000 mL/g above 3 M HNO3. Sorption equilibrium was achieved within 20 min, indicating rapid uptake kinetics suitable for separation applications. Equilibrium sorption studies were performed using Eu3+ as a non-radioactive surrogate for Am3+. The resin exhibited a maximum Eu3+ uptake capacity of 9.5±0.5

Natural killer (NK) cells are not only important in first line defence against viral and bacterial infections, but also in immune surveillance of malignant cells and thus NK cell cytotoxicity is primary indicator of immune function. Although chromium release assay is recognized as 'gold standard' for measuring NK cell activity, it has disadvantages like use of radioactive compounds, poor loading and high spontaneous release. It is difficult to perform this assay in clinical laboratory because of difficulties with disposal of radioactive waste and standardization problems. We describe a flow cy

Production of plutonium for the United States' nuclear weapons program from the 1940s to the 1980s generated 53 million gallons of radioactive chemical waste, which is stored in 177 underground tanks at the Hanford site in southeastern Washington State. Recent attempts to begin the retrieval and treatment of these wastes require moving the waste to more modern tanks and result in potential exposure of the workers to unfamiliar odors emanating from headspace in the tanks. Given the unknown risks involved, workers were placed on supplied air respiratory protection. CH2MHILL, the managers of the

The radioactive iodine from nuclear wastes caused severe environmental contamination and public health concern. Chitosan and montmorillonite as green materials of the favorable adsorptivity were proposed for iodine treatment. Rather than intercalation, the crosslinked chitosan proposedly via Pickering emulsion polymerization was coated by hydrophobical-modified montmorillonite (HMMT) to form the micro-composite of chitosan/HMMT (CTS/HMMT) as the iodide adsorbent of eco-safety, adsorptivity combination and chitosan-swelling limitation. From pH 3 to 10, CTS/HMMTs adsorbed I127 anions no <90% dur

The effect of a chemical mixture on the dermal penetration of arsenic or nickel was assessed by applying arsenic-73 or nickel-63 alone or with the chemical mixture to dermatomed male pig skin samples in flow-through diffusion cells. The chemical mixture consisted of chloroform, phenanthrene, and toluene for arsenic penetration studies and phenol, toluene, and trichloroethylene (TCE) for nickel studies. These are predominant chemicals found at hazardous waste sites. Arsenic and nickel bind to skin after dermal exposure. Total penetration of arsenic and nickel in the chemical mixture were signif

The synthesis of ionic olefin linked three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) is greatly challenging given the hardness of the formation of stable carbon-carbon double bonds (-C = C-). Herein, we report a general strategy for designing porous positively charged sp2 carbon-linked 3D COFs through the Aldol condensation promoted by quaternization. The obtained 3D COFs, namely TFPM-PZI and TAPM-PZI, showed impressive chemical stability. Furthermore, the positively charged frameworks with regular porosity endow 3D ionic COFs with selective capture radioactive ReO4-/TcO4- and great re

This Perspective article reviews the current knowledge regarding the interaction of actinide elements with biomolecules, particularly amino acids, peptides, and proteins. We assess the significance of these interactions, especially in connection to nuclear waste disposal and the potential role of these interactions in the origin of life. Actinides have been observed to form stable complexes with carboxylate groups, resulting in oligomerization and affecting their environmental mobility. The text discusses the complex coordination chemistry of actinides, including the prevalence of hexanuclear

The removal of a 50.9-TBq 137Cs source from a radiation therapy facility in Goiânia gave rise to a radiological accident in September 1987 whose proportions were aggravated by the 16-d interval from the beginning of a series of acts that resulted in the contamination of people and areas, to the moment of identification and seeking of aid. Data gathered from the declarations of persons involved in the accident, matched with the medical assessment and radiation monitoring of areas affected, made it possible to determine procedures for care of victims and for decontaminating operations of these a

Shale gas activities can release trace elements and naturally occurring radionuclides into aquatic environments, yet the long-term impact of low-intensity contamination events remains poorly constrained. This study investigates a localized geochemical anomaly observed in river sediments collected in 2021 near a documented shale-gas-related spill and waste disposal area in the Kennebecasis River watershed. Sediment cores and associated porewaters were collected to assess the distribution, potential sources, and mobility of uranium (U), barium (Ba), and radium-226 (226Ra). Results reveal localiz
