[Secondary radiodermatitis caused by endovascular explorations: 5 cases].

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures expose patients to high doses of ionizing radiation. OBSERVATIONS: We describe 5 patients in whom radiodermatitis developed following vascular catheterization: cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty in 4 cases and renal artery catheterization and angioplasty in 1 case. All patients were men. The endovascular procedures have been repeated or prolonged in all cases excepted one. The clinical aspects were those of a chronic radiodermatitis (4 cases) and acute radiodermatitis (1 case). An extensive and painful ulceration was …

[Chronic radiodermatitis after interventional cardiac catheterization. Four cases].

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopic and cineradiographic procedures expose patients undergoing coronarography to high doses of ionizing irradiation. CASE REPORT: We report four cases of radiodermitis following cardiac catheterization. A 69-year-old man developed a radio-induced ulceration on the left scapular region in 1991 which required excision with skin graft. He had undergone 3 coronarographies and 2 angioplasties from 1989 to 1991. In 1992, a 59-year-old women developed a hard dorsal lesion with central ulceration and scar formation requiring excision and graft. From 1990 to 1992, she had undergon

Therapeutic potency of curcumin on radiodermatitis: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Radiodermatitis (RD) is a frequent adverse event of radiotherapy (RT). Currently, there is no consensus and approved protocol for the treatment of RD. Curcumin (CUR) is a natural polyphenol obtained from turmeric and it has low intrinsic toxicity in humans. The aim of this systematic review was to explore the efficacy of CUR for prevention and treatment of RD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed in the following online databases: Cochrane library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and EMBASE. Among the 5 selected records, 3 had a randomized cl…

Therapeutic effect of turmeric on radiodermatitis: A systematic review.

Radiodermatitis (RD) occurs in 95% of cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. At present, there is no effective treatment for the management of this complication of radiotherapy. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a polyphenolic and biologically active natural compound with various pharmacological functions. The aim of this systematic review was to determine the efficacy of curcumin supplementation for reducing RD severity. This review complied with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Cochr…

[Evaluation of the incidence of radiodermatitis lesions in interventional cardiology].

PURPOSE: The percutaneous coronary interventions use large doses of ionizing radiation, particularly when treating complex lesions. The inci … ergy) procedures were independently associated with a procedure with a DAP ≥200Gy cm2. CONCLUSION: Radiodermatitis lesions occur for 4.82% of patients benefiting from procedures with a DAP ≥200Gy cm2. We suggest the establishment of a DAP threshold for dermal monitoring of patients of 200Gy cm2 per procedure instead of 500Gy cm2.

The ion channel, TRPM2, contributes to the pathogenesis of radiodermatitis.

Radiodermatitis is a painful side effect for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Irradiation of the skin causes inflammation and breakdown of the epidermis and can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in severe cases, as seen in exposure from accidents or weapons such as "dirty bombs" and ultimately leads to tissue fibrosis. However, the pathogenesis of radiodermatitis is not fully understood. Using a mouse model of radiodermatitis, we showed that the Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 2 (TRPM2) ion channel plays a significant role in the development of dermatitis following ex…

[Radiodermatitis. Effectiveness of a collagen dust healing product].

Injuries caused by radio-therapy prove difficult to cure. Catrix is a healing product composed of a collagen particle base having a proven effectiveness in the treatment of various kinds of ulcers. In a study on 33 patients who received radio-therapy and who suffered from injuries caused by roentgen dermatitis, this product succeeded in curing 100% of these ulcers, demonstrating great speed in producing an effect, while the average treatment duration was 5 days. There were no adverse reactions. Therefore, this product received positive marks from both professionals and patients.

[Capillaroscopic and clinical correlations in chronic occupational radiodermatitis].

72 patients (69 M, 3 F) occupationally exposed to X-rays were subjected to a clinical and capillaroscopic evaluation so as to determine the morphological changes occurring within the skin and the microcirculatory system. The two parameters were correlated showing that microvasal lesions appear before clinical signs become evident. Therefore, the authors underline the importance of adding periodic capillaroscopic exams to the clinical control in order to prevent the occurrence of occupational chronic radiodermatitis.
