Chronic effects of noise or kanamycin on the acoustic intra-aural reflex in nonanesthetized rabbits were studied. The intra-aural reflex activity was simultaneously recorded in both ears upon alternate stimulation of the left and the right side. The inner ears were analyzed in scanning and transmission electronmicroscopy. Acoustic reflex amplitude data were obtained for 92 subjects. Uncrossed (ipsilateral) and crossed (contralateral) acoustic reflex activity was measured simultaneously and computer averaged with specially constructed apparatus. We compared the accuracy of seven methods of hearing loss prediction by the acoustic reflex in 60 subjects. The methods were two versions of Sensitivity Prediction by Acoustic Reflex, four regression equations, and the bivariate plot coordinate system. From these measures of the normal and reduced reflex threshold, an extrapolation may be performed down to the hearing threshold. We employed simultaneous measurement of the crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex (AR) and a signal-averaging technique to evaluate supra-threshold amplitude characteristics of the AR.
