PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the latest data published and presented at international meetings about the use of intracorneal ring segments in corneal and refractive surgery.
RECENT FINDINGS: The long-term data on intracorneal ring segments in the correction of low to moderate myopia indicate that they seem clearly comparable with laser in-situ keratomileusis, the most common refractive procedure worldwide. There is increasing interest in the use of intracorneal ring segments for the treatment of some complications after laser in-situ keratomileusis and for the control of some degre

The increase in the depth of focus (DoF) for the treatment of presbyopia or cataracts is a topic of great interest for anterior segment surgeons who have seen how new surgical possibilities to achieve DoF enlargement have emerged. Nowadays, several technologies to extend the DoF are available, from corneal laser refractive surgery procedures in presbyopia to intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in cataract or refractive lens exchange. Some of these procedures are based on aspheric profiles, either in the cornea or in the IOL, which modulate the spherical aberration (SA) and, therefore, extend t

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of dry eye syndrome following refractive corneal surgery and identify prognostic factors, thereby providing evidence-based guidance for precise clinical assessment and individualized management.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted including 778 patients (1598 eyes) aged 18-45 years who underwent refractive corneal surgery at our hospital between January and December 2020. Surgical procedures included LASIK, FS-LASIK, PRK, Smart transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy, and ICL implantation. Comprehensive preoperative ophthalmic examin

Modern aberrometry measures standard and so-called higher-order refractory aberrations. Ophthalmology and optometry use Zernike polynomials to describe aberrations of the retina and lens causing refractory errors. Aberrations of a higher order sometimes follow successful laser surgery, causing reduced vision and inducing patient dissatisfaction; enhanced wavefront data can help to avoid this. Aberrometry is used also for objective measurement of refractory changes. Wavefront techniques and their clinical application enable many options for understanding the delicate balance of eye optics. UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to evaluate corneal biomechanical properties in myopic patients after ReLEx SMILE and FemtoLASIK surgeries using the Corvis ST analyzer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The SMILE group comprised 23 patients (46 eyes) with spherical refraction -3.8±1.8 diopters (D), the FemtoLASIK group included 18 patients (36 eyes) with spherical refraction -3.5±1.3 D. Analysis of the biomechanical properties of the cornea was carried out using the CORVIS ST device (Oculus, Germany) before and seven days after corneal refractive surgery.
RESULTS: In the SMILE group, with intraope

Purpose. To investigate refractive changes after strabismus correction procedures among adults. Methods. Retrospective chart review of adult patients who had horizontal recti muscles surgery with preoperative and postoperative cycloplegic refraction measurements. The preoperative refraction was mathematically subtracted from the postoperative refraction, and the induced refractive changes were statistically analyzed. Vector analysis was used to examine the magnitude of the toric change. The proportion of clinically significant refractive change was evaluated as well. Results. Thirty-one eyes f

Refractive surprises remain one of the most challenging postoperative complications in modern cataract surgery, where precision and patient expectations for plano refractive outcomes continue to rise. Despite advances in optical biometry, intraocular lens (IOL) formula optimization, and surgical technology, postoperative refractive error still occurs in a subset of patients and may significantly affect visual satisfaction and quality of life. This review synthesizes contemporary evidence on the causes, detection, and optometric management of refractive surprises, with a practical focus on the

UNLABELLED: A 43-question survey was e-mailed to all resident members of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), AS … rcent had experience implanting a presbyopia-correcting IOL. Over 75% had not performed any corneal refractive surgical procedures. Although basic cataract case numbers appear adequate, there are significant perceived deficiencies in current resident training models for surgical astigmatism management, implanting presbyopia-correcting IOLs, and corneal refractive surgery.

The treatment of keratoconus is in part dependant on the severity of the disease process. When contact lenses fail because of patient intolerance or insufficient acuity to meet the patient's needs, penetrating keratoplasty is the usual surgical modality considered for satisfactory visual rehabilitation. Keratoconus is considered to be a contraindication for incisional refractive surgery such as radial keratotomies or LASIK because of the corneal instability conferred by these procedures. When the cornea is transparent, INTACS implantation is a refractive modality that may improve visual functi

Presbyopia is an inevitable and progressive loss of the eye's ability to focus on nearby objects due to aging, which affects everyone regardless of their refractive error. Uncorrected presbyopia is a significant burden worldwide and affects the quality of life. Conservative options include spectacle correction, contact lenses, and pharmacologic agents. Spectacles are commonly used to correct vision, but have certain drawbacks such as peripheral blur and impaired depth perception. These limitations have been associated with an increased risk of accidental falls. Several surgical options are ava

BACKGROUND: Automatic refraction is commonly applied as a substitute for subjective refraction to evaluate residue refractive error after corneal refractive surgery. Previous research pooled the data from patients of different subgroups to calculate the difference between automatic and subjective refraction, which lacks clinical implications. The present research aims to investigate the difference between subjective and automatic refraction by subgroups in a large population to guide the proper use of autorefraction after corneal refractive surgery.
METHODS: Patients between 18 and 50 years w

PURPOSE: To compare postoperative astigmatic correction between femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx) and small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in eyes with myopic astigmatism.
METHODS: We examined 26 eyes of 26 patients undergoing FLEx and 26 eyes of 26 patients undergoing SMILE to correct myopic astigmatism (manifest astigmatism of 1 diopter (D) or more). Visual acuity, cylindrical refraction, the predictability of the astigmatic correction, and the astigmatic vector components using Alpin's method, were compared between the two groups 3 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: We found no

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of different wavefront-guided aberration ablation patterns on visual function using adaptive optics technique and explore the effective and feasible pattern of customized refractive surgery.
METHODS: Control study. Under dark condition, six volunteers'right eyes were fully dilated with 5 g/L phenyl ephedrine. The myopia and astigmatism were first fully corrected with optical lens, and then 100% contrast visual acuity of different wavefront correction patterns was detected using adaptive optics system in through a 6.0 mm pupil optical path.

Since the introduction of femtosecond laser (FS) systems for corneal flap creation in laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis there have been numerous applications for FS laser in corneal surgery. This manuscript details the utility of FS lasers in corneal surgical procedures including refractive laser surgeries, intracorneal ring segment tunnels, presbyopic treatments, and FS-assisted keratoplasty. We also review the role of FS lasers in diagnostic procedures such as two photon excitation fluorescence and second harmonic generation.

PURPOSE: : To report the frequency of periorbital aesthetic abnormalities in patients undergoing refractive surgery and to report the ability of the patient and the refractive surgeon in picking up these findings compared to the oculoplastic surgeon.
METHODS: Single-center, prospective observational case series. All patients underwent standard pre-operative work-up for refractive surgery, answered a study questionnaire, and underwent face photographs (with and without glasses). The patient, the refractive, and the oculoplastic surgeons evaluated the photographs to categorize the concerns as n
