Effect of addition of bioactive glass to resin modified glass ionomer cement on enamel demineralization under orthodontic brackets.

BACKGROUND: Enamel demineralization and white spot lesions around orthodontic brackets is a common problem associated with fixed orthodontic treatment. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are commonly used for bracket bonding and recently, bioactive glass (BAG) was added to GICs to enhance deposition of calcium phosphate in adjacent dental structure. This study sought to assess the effect of addition of BAG particles to resin modified GIC (RMGIC) on enamel demineralization under orthodontic brackets. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this in vitro, experimental study, 60 sound human premolars were immersed i

Biocompatibility of a restorative resin-modified glass ionomer cement applied in very deep cavities prepared in human teeth.

This study evaluated whether a restorative resin-modified glass ionomer cement, Vitremer (VM), would be biocompatible with pulp tissue when used as a liner in very deep cavities prepared in young human permanent teeth. Two dental cements in current use as liner materials, Vitrebond (VB) and Dycal (DY), were compared to VM. Class V cavities were prepared in 36 sound premolars that were scheduled for extraction, and the cavity floor was lined with the restorative cement (VM) or a liner/base control cement (VB or DY). For VM specimens, the cavity floor was pretreated with a primer (polyacrylic ac

Effects of a peripheral enamel margin on the long-term bond strength and nanoleakage of composite/dentin interfaces produced by self-adhesive and conventional resin cements.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of peripheral enamel margins on the long-term bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage in resin/dentin interfaces produced by self-adhesive and conventional resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five self-adhesive [RelyX-Unicem (UN), RelyX-U100 (UC), GCem (GC), Maxcem (MC), Set (SET)] and 2 conventional resin cements [RelyX-ARC(RX), Panavia F(PF)] were used. An additional group included the use of a two-step self-etching adhesive (SE Bond) with Panavia F (PS). One hundred ninety-two molars were assigned to 8 groups according to luting material. Clinical Assessment of a Newer Resin-based Bioactive Restorative Cement on Class II Cavities of Primary Molars: A Comparative Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Primary molars play a significant role in mastication, jaw alignment, and guiding permanent tooth eruption. However, their proximal surfaces are prone to decay due to anatomical challenges and cleansing difficulties, making restorative intervention challenges. While traditional materials such as dental amalgam, composite resin (CR), and glass ionomer cement (GIC) are commonly used, advancements in dental technology have introduced bioactive materials as promising alternatives, warranting further research to ensure optimal outcomes. AIM: The present study aimed to evaluate and co

Evaluation of Glass Ionomer Cement and Composite Resin Restorations in Hypomineralized Permanent First Molars: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Restorative treatment for molars affected by molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) presents a challenge due to the altered enamel structure. It is critical to understand the evidence base of the available restorative options, due to the high treatment burden for such teeth. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate and compare the success rates of glass ionomer cement (GIC) and composite resin restorations in hypomineralized first permanent molars and to further evaluate the restorations on the basis of modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. The in vitro assessment of resin coating materials containing calcium phosphate, bioactive glass, and polylysine for glass ionomer cement restorations.

OBJECTIVE: Glass ionomer cements (GICs) require protective surface coatings to enhance their clinical performance. This study developed novel protective resin coatings for GICs containing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM), bioactive glass nanoparticles (BAGs), and poly-L-lysine (PLS) and evaluated their physical, mechanical, and biological properties when applied to GICs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experimental resin coating materials were formulated with 5-10 wt% of MCPM, BAGs, and PLS. The degree of monomer conversion was measured usingAttenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infra

Bioactive Resin Cement Color Stability and Restoration Thickness as Determinants of the Final Shade in a Glass-Ceramic CAD/CAM Material.

Bioactive resin cements are gaining popularity for their clinical benefits, but concerns remain regarding their color stability. This study evaluated the color change (ΔE00) and whiteness change (ΔWID) in bioactive resin cements and how their potential discoloration affects the shade of bonded CAD/CAM glass-ceramics at different ceramic thicknesses. VITA Mark II blocks were prepared in three thicknesses (0.5, 0.8, and 1.0 mm) and divided by resin cement: Panavia SA Universal (Pn), Predicta Bioactive Cement (Pr), and ACTIVA BioACTIVE Cement (Ac) (n = 10). Additionally, 10 specimens (10 × 2 mm) …

AIM: This study evaluated the short-term clinical and microbiological performance of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RM-GIC) cement containing chlorhexidine (CHX) for atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) in primary teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical trial was conducted in 36 children that received ART in primary molars either with GIC (group I, n = 18) or GIC containing 1.25% CHX (group II, n = 18). The survival rate of restorations was checked 7 days, 3, and 6 months after their application when saliva and biofilm were collected for microbiological assessment of mutans strepto

Development of a novel dental resin cement incorporating FGF-2-loaded polymer particles with the ability to promote tissue regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: Aiming to achieve bioactive dental resins that promote healing of surrounding tissues, we developed novel poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate/trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate) (polyHEMA/TMPT) particles. These particles have been reported to be useful as a non-biodegradable carrier for fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) in vitro. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of an adhesive resin incorporating FGF-2-loaded polymer particles to promote tissue regeneration in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Experimental adhesive resins were prepared by incorporating FGF-2-loaded polyHEM

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the adhesive quality of simplified self-adhesive and conventional resin cements to Y-TZP in dry and aged conditions. METHODS: Y-TZP ceramic blocks (N = 192) (5 x 5 x 2 mm) were embedded in acrylic resin and randomly divided into two groups, based on surface conditioning: 96% isopropanol or chairside tribochemical silica coating and silanization. Conditioned ceramics were divided into four groups to receive the resin cements (Panavia F 2.0, Variolink II, RelyX U100 and Maxcem). A Prospective Clinical Evaluation of the Retention of Glass Ionomer Cement Versus Resin-Based Pit and Fissure Sealants Among School Children.

Introduction Dental caries are commonly observed in schoolchildren, particularly on the complex pit and fissure surfaces of permanent molars, which readily trap plaque and debris, making sealants a critical preventive intervention. This prospective comparative clinical study sought to assess the retention rates and clinical performance of glass ionomer cement (GIC) and resin-based sealants in a school-based setting among children aged 7-10 years. Materials and methods This study was carried out in government primary schools in Bhopal, India, from June to December 2024. Eighty children with at
