Incidence of RS virus infections in premature children's ward.

In the course of two years (1974-76) four outbreaks of acute respiratory disease in the premature children's ward of a Prague hospital were studied virologically and clinically. RS virus (RSV) was found to be the aetiological agent. The highest isolation rate of RSV was achieved when using two heteroploid cell lines (L-132 and HEp-2 cells) simultaneously. Of the 30 children examined, 60% showed a severe course of disease (pneumonia and/or bronchiolitis) while in 40% of the children the disease had the form of rhinitis with striking abundance of whitish foamy secretions. In one of the outbreaks

A calcium-channel antagonist can prevent paramyxovirus-induced neurodegeneration.

Mumps virus caused a partially lytic infection in cultivated rat embryonic dorsal root ganglion neurons with a restricted formation of viral components. The neuronal degeneration was markedly enhanced by increasing the calcium concentration of the medium and could be almost totally inhibited by the dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist nifedipine. The drug had no effect on a productive and completely lytic Sendai virus infection of the neurons. A previous neurophysiological study has shown that a reduced calcium influx occurs during the action potential early during the infection. The pre

[Some respiratory viruses in the etiology of acute upper respiratory infections].

The viral etiology of acute respiratory diseases, determined in 107 children admitted to hospital during the 1966-1969 period, was confirmed in 36% of the cases by isolation of the viral agent and in 59% by serologic reactions. Parainfluenza viruses, especially of type 1 and 3, were encountered more often in the etiology of acute or obstructive laryngitis, and the syncytial respiratory virus in tracheobronchitis.

Landscape of Prophylactic Strategies Against Human Parainfluenza Virus Type 3.

Human parainfluenza virus-type 3 (HPIV3) is a respiratory virus responsible for mild illnesses in most of the population and severe illnesses, such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, in young children, immunocompromised individuals and the elderly. To date, no vaccines nor antiviral drugs have been approved against HPIV3, despite its significant burden in vulnerable people. In this review, we present both past and current prophylactic strategies against HPIV3, such as live-attenuated virus, vector-based, subunit and mRNA vaccine candidates or antibody-based passive protection. For each strategy,

Air in All the Wrong Places.

Extraluminal air can occur through a wide variety of mechanisms. Often, the free air resides in isolated regions including the thorax, the peritoneum, or the mediastinum. We present a pediatric case where there was extensive extraluminal air simultaneously within several regions, one of which has never been reported in the literature.

Cardiac arrhythmias as a manifestation of acquired heart disease in association with paediatric respiratory syncitial virus infection.

Respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) is a common cause of upper and lower respiratory tract infection in infants. An association between RSV bronchiolitis and cardiac arrhythmias has been described but is rare. A further case of an infant with supraventricular tachycardia in association with culture-positive respiratory syncitial virus bronchiolitis is reported. This case prompted a review of the two other cases of arrhythmia associated with RSV infection seen at this institution and a review of all other published cases.

Respiratory syncytial virus infection: a cause of respiratory distress syndrome and pneumonia in adults.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, an important and sometimes lethal disease of infants and children, generally causes a milder and self-limited syndrome of cough, nasal congestion and fever in adults. While some evidence suggests that RSV may be responsible for more serious respiratory illness in the elderly and chronically ill, it has not been shown to cause life-threatening respiratory tract disease in previously healthy adults. This report describes a previously healthy woman who experienced the acute onset of right lower lobe pneumonia which rapidly progressed to the adult respi

[Respiratory syncytial virus infection in chronic bronchitis patients].

Two groups of patients with acute respiratory disease (ARD) were examined: 57 (the 1st group) had chronic bronchitis, 265 patients (the 2nd group) had no previous history of chronic bronchitis. The investigation was performed using serological and immunofluorescent methods and was repeated in the course of 12-18 months. Respiratory syncytial (RS) viral infection was diagnosed significantly more frequently in the 1st group whereas the frequency of influenza, parainfluenza and adenoviral infection in both groups was the same. Mixed RS-viral infection in these patients was more common. In 3 patie

[Clinical aspects of acute and chronic respiratory syncytial virus infection in adult polyclinic patients].

A total of 224 workers and employees engaged at the Smolensk flax spinning plant, suffering from acute respiratory diseases, were examined on an outpatient basis. Virus etiology of the diseases was established in 84 patients (37.7%) with the aid of the serological tests (HI and CF) and immunofluorescent techniques. Respiratory syncytial virus infection was diagnosed in 19 patients (8.5%). As regards the clinical picture the symptoms of intoxication were unmarked. Half the patients demonstrated moderate involvement of the upper respiratory tract which persisted for 7 days. Obstructive bronchiti

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus infections in young dairy cattle: clinical and haematological findings.

Clinical signs and haematological findings during the acute and convalescent phases of an infection with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were studied under field conditions. The study was carried out in 139 cattle less than 16 months of age in 16 herds with serologically proven bovine RSV infections. Blood was collected for serological and haematological examination. Repeated clinical examinations were carried out until 35 days after appearance of disease. Signs of general disease such as reduced appetite and a body temperature of 40 degrees C or higher lasted less than three days in

Enhanced Efficiency of the LLC-MK2 Cell Line with Stable Expression of TMPRSS2 in Isolating Human Parainfluenza Virus 3 from Respiratory Specimens.

OBJECTIVE: LLC-MK2/TMPRSS2 cells constitutively express TMPRSS2, eliminating the requirement for additional trypsin during HPIV3 culture. The efficiency of LLC-MK2/TMPRSS2 for isolating HPIV3 from respiratory specimens was evaluated in comparison with Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK). METHODS: HPIV3-positive respiratory specimens from children with acute respiratory infections (February-June 2025) were inoculated into LLC-MK2/TMPRSS2 and MDCK. The cytopathic effect (CPE) was monitored microscopically, and the proportion of positive cells was evaluated using direct immunofluorescence assay (DF

Atopic Neutrophils Prevent Postviral Airway Disease.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infancy is associated with increased risk of asthma, except in those with allergic disease at the time of infection. Using house dust mite allergen, we examined the effect of pre-existing atopy on postviral airway disease using Sendai virus in mice, which models RSV infection in humans. Sendai virus drives postviral airway disease in nonatopic mice; however, pre-existing atopy protected against the development of airway disease. This protection depended upon neutrophils, as depletion of neutrophils at the time of infection restored the susceptibil

Parainfluenza 3 vaccination of sheep.

Outbreaks of pneumonia associated with Pasteurella haemolytica have occurred in sheep in the area of Perthshire served by this practice, and on some farms the disease has been an important annual cause of loss. Serological evidence was obtained that parainfluenza 3 (PI3) virus might be implicated as a predisposing factor to pasteurellosis. A live attenuated PI3 virus vaccine licensed for use in cattle was given intranasally to ewes on one farm. Many sheep seroconverted and outbreaks of pneumonia were negligible around the subsequent lambing time. The protection of the flock appeared to last fo

Evolution of airway microbiology in the infant with cystic fibrosis: role of nonpseudomonal and pseudomonal pathogens.

Bacterial colonization of the airways of the infant with cystic fibrosis is usually established early in life, and, once established, is difficult to eradicate and is associated with progressive lung disease. Thus, understanding of early airway microbiology is critical to the development of appropriate early interventions such as prophylactic antibiotics, immunotherapy, and, potentially, gene therapy. The barriers to the study of infant airway microbiology are discussed, and the properties of infant lung anatomy, physiology, and immunity, which predispose the young patient to serious infection

Parainfluenza virus type 3 outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Parainfluenza virus (PIV) is a respiratory pathogen in young children and is second only to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as a cause of lower respiratory tract infection. PIV type 3 (PIV3) is the most severe. Herein we describe an outbreak of PIV3 in three infants in a neonatal intensive care unit. They were diagnosed on virus culture from pharyngeal swabs. We prevented the spread of the virus using standard infection control procedures and isolation of the symptomatic infants. One infant had severe chronic lung disease and was complicated with recurrent wheezing for a long time. Becau

ORMDL3 variants associated with bronchiolitis susceptibility in a Chinese population.

Recent studies revealed common genetic risks for both viral bronchiolitis and asthma. Genome-wide association studies revealed that rs7216389 in the ORMDL3 gene is associated with childhood asthma. We conducted a case-control study examining the associations between ORMDL3 polymorphisms (rs7216389, rs12603332, and rs11650680) and bronchiolitis susceptibility/viral findings among 247 infant bronchiolitis cases and 190 healthy controls. We genotyped single nucleotide polymorphisms by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and detected respiratory viruses wit
