PURPOSE/METHODS: The blood flow in the posterior ciliary and retinal vascular circulations was studied by fluorescein angiography in a patient with a central retinal vein occlusion and cilioretinal infarction.
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Fluorescein dye appeared in two cilioretinal arteries before the dye appeared in the retinal arterial circulation. This finding supports the concept of a relative hypoperfusion of the cilioretinal arteries secondary to increased retinal venous pressure.

Erythrocyte aggregation is one of the principal determinants of blood viscosity at low shear rates (low flow). Anatomical and hemodynamical characteristics make retinal venous circulation particularly dependent on hemorheological factors. Erythrocyte aggregation and other laboratory parameters (haematocrit, fibrinogen, plasma proteins, clotting) were measured in 85 patients presenting with retinal vein occlusion and 64 controls matched for age, sex and vascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, smoking). Statistical analysis of the results demonstrated a significant difference between the …

Proposed mechanisms for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment after branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) include hole development from preexisting retinal cysts and vitreoretinal traction secondary to retinal neovascularization. Damage caused by choriocapillary obstruction may also occur in some of the retinal breaks. Vitreoretinal traction without associated retinal neovascularization has not been previously emphasized as a pathogenetic mechanism. We document both iatrogenic and idiopathic vitreoretinal traction as causes of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in ischemic retina after BRVO. A liter…

Sixty-eight foreign-born Hispanic patients with angiography-proven retinal-vein occlusion (RVO) and 50 age-, sex-, and race-matched controls were evaluated for systemic disease. Thirty of the RVO patients had central retinal-vein occlusion, and 38 had branch retinal-vein occlusion. Hypertension, the most commonly associated factor, was present in 66.2% of the RVO patients in contrast to 18% of the controls (P less than .001). Other factors which were more common in the RVO population included open-angle glaucoma (19.1% vs 8%), diabetes mellitus (16.2% vs 12%), and atherosclerotic heart disease

Among 15,000 neuroophthalmological patients examined in the years 1963 to 1977, 51 showed periphlebitic changes of the retinal veins. 46 of these patients were known to suffer from multiple sclerosis (MS). From his results that changes of the fundus of the eye are associated with a high degree of probability (about 90 per cent) with multiple sclerosis. In the same period of time, 422 patients were found to suffer from MS. From this one can calculate the relative frequency of periphlebitic changes of the retinal veins in MS cases to be about 10.9 per cent. Apart from their diagnostic importance…

The visual field defects in 20 consecutive patients who had branch retinal "vein" occlusions included arcuate nerve fiber bundle scotomas, central scotomas, paracentral scotomas, and segmental peripheral constriction. The role of retinal arteriolar insufficiency in the production of these field defects is discussed. The available evidence suggests that the term "branch retinal vascular occlusion" is a preferable term to describe such clinical findings.

INTRODUCTION: Risk factors for retinal vein occlusion have been extensively studied, with varying population sizes. Smaller populations result in less certain measures of associations. The present review included studies with a relevant population size to identify clinically relevant risk factors for retinal vein occlusion. Understanding the risk factors of retinal vein occlusion is important for the management of these patients.
AREAS COVERED: A comprehensive literature review was conducted through a systematic literature search in PubMed and Embase. Additional studies were selected from cro…

Combined CRAO/CRVO in our patients occurred with rapid visual loss, usually over a few hours, associated with evidence of inflammation and/or cellular infiltration of the retrobulbar portion of the optic nerve. The ophthalmoscopic appearance was characteristic, with papilledema and hemorrhages of various types in the posterior pole. The retina also showed ischemic changes, with a milky-white color and cherry-red macula. Fluorescein angiography, when possible, showed no retinal vascular flow, and normal choroidal flow. After six to eight weeks, optic atrophy was evident and the retinal vessels

PURPOSE: Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) are two distinct retinal conditions that typically affect older patient populations with comorbidities or predisposing risk factors. This case report presents unusual co-occurrences of CRVO and RRD in two young, healthy adult patients and proposes potential etiological factors contributing to the complex presentations.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of two young, healthy male patients with no history of systemic diseases who presented with concurrent CRVO and RRD.
RESULTS: The first case…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Abnormal retinal neovascularization caused by ischemic retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a frequent cause of visually significant vitreous hemorrhage. The early detection of new vessels may be challenging and often requires the use of invasive tests such as fundus fluorescein angiography (FA). We demonstrate the use of wide-field optical coherence tomography angiography (WF-OCTA) in the detection and characterization of neovascularization secondary to ischemic RVO.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational case series of patients diagnosed with ischemic…
