Neighborhood Disadvantage and Clinical Outcome Following Concussion in Adolescents.

Whether social determinants of health are associated with clinical outcome following concussion among adolescents is not well established. T … nd Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were used to compare the groups on two clinical outcomes: days to return to school and days to return to sports. Results of chi-squared tests did not reveal between-group differences in return to school at 21 or 28 days. However, groups differed in the percentage of adolescents who had returned to sports by 21 days (greater neighb …

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive repair surgery for progressive spondylolysis in a young athlete: a technical note.

Presently, the invasiveness of direct repair surgery for lumbar spondylolysis is relatively high. Thus, high school and junior high school students who play sports often cannot return to sports before graduation because of the invasiveness. The use of a robotic system enabled an accurate and minimally invasive procedure. Robotic-assisted minimally invasive direct pars repair surgery is useful for young patients with progressive spondylolysis.

Tonsil Riots and Vaccine Hesitancy: A 100-Year Legacy of Medical Mistrust.

The "tonsil riots" of 1906 were panics that developed at several public schools in historically immigrant-dominated neighborhoods of New York City (NYC). Per archived newspaper articles, several NYC public schools asked for parental consent to have Board of Health physicians come and perform tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy on their students. When children subsequently returned home from school "drooling mouthfuls of blood and barely able to speak," mothers reacted with panic and flocked to the schools demanding the safe return of their children. Police, ultimately, had to be called in to manag

Promoting child health in a smoke-free school: suggestions for school health personnel.

Health effects of involuntary smoking on school-age children are outlined and suggestions are offered for schools to become smoke-free environments for students, faculty, and staff. Suggestions are offered for developing and implementing strategies for smoke-free schools. A data base exists to support health reasons for eliminating smoking in schools, but it is necessary to build on this information to convince school personnel that smoking in schools offers no positive returns and should be eliminated. School health personnel are encouraged to lead the campaign.

Understanding Baseline Concussion Testing: A Resource for School Nurses as Members of Concussion Management Teams.

Sports-related concussions (SRCs) are not uncommon among teen athletes. School nurses are in an ideal position to care for athletes affected with SRCs. However, evidence suggests there is a lack of knowledge regarding concussion management, use of baseline concussion testing, and active involvement on concussion management teams among school nurses. This article briefly examines the use of baseline concussion testing as a tool for assessing and managing the student athlete suffering from an SRC. The role of the school nurse on concussion management teams will also be explored. As active member

School functioning and chronic tension headaches in adolescents: improvement only after multidisciplinary evaluation.

Pediatric patients with chronic tension-type headaches often experience significant school impairment. Although some improve after treatment with a neurologist, many require more comprehensive treatment. The authors examined whether school functioning and attendance improved after a multidisciplinary evaluation focusing on a return to functioning despite headaches. They also examined whether patients' headaches improved. Participants were 47 adolescents ages 12-17, most of whom had not responded to past neurological treatment. Adolescents completed the PedsQL School Functioning Scale at evalua

Return to Play After Hook of Hamate Excision in Baseball Players.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the hook of hamate in baseball players are significant injuries that can lead to pain and missed time from competition. The diagnosis is typically delayed because of the vagueness of symptoms and normal radiographic findings. Excision of the nonunited fragment has been supported as the primary treatment, but there are currently limited information and data on a timetable for return to competition after surgery. PURPOSE: To report on a large cohort of competitive baseball players with hook of hamate fractures treated with excision of the fragment and to assess the time
