Synostosis of the first and second ribs in six horses.

CASE DESCRIPTION Over a 2-year period, 6 horses (4 Selle Français, 1 Hanoverian, and 1 Thoroughbred) were referred for evaluation of forelimb lameness. All horses had radiographic evidence of synostosis of the first and second ribs (SFSR). CLINICAL FINDINGS For 1 horse, the SFSR was considered the probable cause of the lameness (grade 3/5), with a shortening of the cranial phase of the stride in the affected limb. For 3 horses, it was considered a possible cause of the lameness (grade 1/5) for the same reason. For 2 horses, SFSR was considered an incidental finding unassociated with any clinic…

An assessment of outcomes with intramedullary fixation of fractured ribs.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of fractured ribs with internal fixation is an increasingly accepted therapy. Concurrently, specific rib fixation prostheses are being developed which should improve results and minimise hardware and rib/splint construct failures. The Synthes titanium intramedullary splint lends itself to difficult to access areas such as posterior rib fractures and fractures under the scapula. We analyse a case series of patients in whom this rib fixation prosthesis has been used. METHODS: Fifteen patients received 35 intramedullary splints. Follow up at 3 and 6 months was per…

Sequencing human ribs into anatomical order by quantitative multivariate methods.

Little research has focussed on methods to anatomically sequence ribs. Correct anatomical sequencing of ribs assists in determining the location and distribution of regional trauma, age estimation, number of puncture wounds, number of individuals, and personal identification. The aim of the current study is to develop a method for placing fragmented and incomplete rib sets into correct anatomical position. Ribs 2-10 were used from eleven cadavers of an Australian population. Seven variables were measured from anatomical locations on the rib. General descriptive statistics were calculated for e…

Cervical ribs with neurological sequelae in children: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical ribs may result in thoracic outlet syndrome. Neurological compromise in children with cervical ribs, however, is rare. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report our experience with cervical ribs in a pediatric population and review this specific literature. RESULTS: In our experience with a pediatric neurosurgical population, symptomatic cervical ribs were often identified in patients with Chiari I malformation. Surgical resection of symptomatic cervical ribs in children appears to have good long-term results. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our experience, symptomatic cervical ribs shou…

Analysis of cervical ribs in a series of human fetuses.

In humans, an increasing body of evidence has linked the frequency of cervical ribs to stillbirths, other malformations and early childhood cancers. However, the frequency of cervical ribs in a putatively healthy fetal population is not sufficiently known to assess the actual medical risks of these prenatal findings. We therefore analyzed the presence of skeletal anomalies in a series of 199 electively aborted fetuses, which were whole-mount stained with alizarin red specific for skeletal tissues. Results show that approximately 40% of the fetuses had cervical ribs, even though external congen…

Total absence of ribs in a newborn with cerebrocostomandibular syndrome.

Total absence of ribs is a rare finding that has occasionally been documented in patients with cerebrocostomandibular syndrome. Only 2 other reports document complete absence of ribs in 3 individuals, and we tabulate the findings of all the 4 cases of complete absence of ribs in this case report. Our case and the other 3 reported cases represent the extreme form of cerebrocostomandibular syndrome with regard to the costal defects.

Cervical ribs: useful marker of monosomy X in fetal hydrops.

Cervical ribs were observed in six hydropic fetuses with 45X karyotype. To test the usefulness of this observation in the macerated hydropic fetus where chromosome culture is problematic, a group of 36 hydropic fetuses was examined. Cases were chosen to include fetuses with several karyotypic and pathological abnormalities known to be associated with fetal hydrops. Whole-body anteroposterior radiographs were evaluated without knowledge of the fetal karyotype or pathological findings. Twenty-five fetuses had an abnormal karyotype, seven had a normal karyotype and in four culture failed. In the …

Inflammatory lesions of ribs: an analysis of the Terry Collection.

The aim of this paper is to consider the diagnostic criteria for tuberculosis in ancient populations. It investigates the frequency of periosteal new bone formation on the visceral surfaces of ribs from 1718 individuals from the Terry Collection, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. and attempts to determine the aetiological factors producing these lesions. Numbers of individuals with lesions according to cause of death were recorded and the patterning of lesions compared between people who had died from tuberculosis and those whose cause of death was unrelated to a pulmonary disease. Rib …

[Giant cell tumors of the ribs. Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of grade I-II giant-cell tumour of the ribs extending to the thorax and the vertebral column. The tumour was treated by surgical resection followed by vertebral curettage in two stages and adjuvant regional radiotherapy. Giant-cell tumours of the ribs are exceptional and rarely found in the literature. They raise a therapeutic problem (surgery is essential, but radiotherapy is controverted), and a prognostic problem (there is always a potential risk of recurrent malignancy).

A unique chest wall splint for unilateral agenesis of ribs.

Unilateral agenesis of ribs with a "lung hernia," may cause severe respiratory distress in a neonate. Our experience with the use of a temporary external chest splint for stabilization of the congenital flail chest in one patient is presented. The device facilitated extubation and allowed the infant to grow prior to future surgical reconstruction.

The subclavian artery in 16 patients with complete cervical ribs.

In a series of 16 patients presenting with symptoms due to the presence of a complete cervical rib, 8 complained of neurological symptoms only and 8 presented with major vascular symptoms. There were 21 complete cervical ribs in this series, 5 patients having bilateral cervical ribs, and these were excised. At operation particular attention was paid to the anatomy and pathology of the subclavian artery in relation to the cervical rib. Two anatomical variants were present. In type A cervical rib (16 cases) the subclavian artery crossed the first rib medial to the exostosis and all patients with…

Development of ribs and intercostal muscles in the chicken embryo.

In the thorax of higher vertebrates, ribs and intercostal muscles play a decisive role in stability and respiratory movements of the body wall. They are derivatives of the somites, the ribs originating in the sclerotome and the intercostal muscles originating in the myotome. During thorax development, ribs and intercostal muscles extend into the lateral plate mesoderm and eventually contact the sternum during ventral closure. Here, we give a detailed description of the morphogenesis of ribs and thoracic muscles in the chicken embryo (Gallus gallus). Using Alcian blue staining as well as Sox9 a…

Penetrating Aortic Injury due to Broken Ribs and Preventive Measures.

We herein report two cases of patients that underwent prophylactic operations to prevent aortic injuries in association with fractured ribs. Penetrating aortic injuries induced by fractured ribs remain fatal. Prophylactic operations appear effective. However, the indication for such operations should be clarified further in the future.

Microscopic markers of an infradian biorhythm in human juvenile ribs.

Recent studies have indicated that there may be an infradian systemic biorhythm that coordinates aspects of human hard tissue growth and inf … f 8 to 12 years. There was also a negative correlation between RP and the relative cortical area of ribs (r = -0.500, p = 0.048). Relationships between bone remodeling and the biorhythm were much more variable in younger children. Results imply that as the biorhythm speeds up there is increased bone deposition during remodeling of the rib, leading to t …

Thoracic outlet syndrome in an adolescent with bilateral bifid ribs.

Reported here is a 13-year-old girl suffering from pain in her right lower neck region and the shoulder for the preceding 2-3 years. She was diagnosed to have right thoracic outlet syndrome due to bifid ribs--caused by the bony fusion of the variant cervical rib. She was operated via supraclavicular approach, whereby the variant cervical rib and the fibrous bands were excised. She was found to be quite improved 1 month after surgery. Thoracic outlet syndrome, a rare disease of childhood, is discussed in the light of the relevant literature.

Geometry of human ribs pertinent to orthopedic chest-wall reconstruction.

Orthopedic reconstruction of blunt chest trauma can aid restoration of pulmonary function to reduce the mortality associated with serial rib fractures and flail chest injuries. Contemporary chest wall reconstruction requires contouring of generic plates to the complex surface geometry of ribs. This study established a biometric foundation to generate specialized, anatomically contoured osteosynthesis hardware for rib fracture fixation. On human cadaveric ribs three through nine, the surface geometry pertinent to anatomically conforming osteosynthesis plates was characterized by quantifying the…
