Chalazia and rosacea.

Fifty-seven percent of patients scheduled for excision of chalazia over 19 years of age and 64% of patients over the age of 29 were found to have rosacea. This compares to an incidence in our control group of 12% and 13%, respectively. Rosacea was almost twice as common in patients with recurrent chalazia as in those with only one occurrence.

S2k guideline: Rosacea.

This updated and upgraded S2k guideline deals with the diagnosis and treatment of rosacea, which is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease mostly affecting the face. Initially, rosacea is characterized by recurrent erythema, telangiectasia and flushing. Later, the inflammatory component predominates, with persistent erythema with follicular papules, papulopustules and pustules. The development of phyma, which usually occurs on the acral localizations, is the most severe manifestation. For the treatment of rosacea, the interdisciplinary guideline committee, with representatives of the Germ…

Oxymetazoline (topical): rosacea.

This Hospital Pharmacy feature is extracted from Off-Label Drug Facts, a publication available from Wolters Kluwer Health. Off-Label Drug Facts is a practitioner-oriented resource for information about specific drug uses that are unapproved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Pediatric ocular rosacea.

A case of severe pediatric ocular rosacea was effectively treated after 2.5 years of misdiagnosis. A high index of suspicion should be maintained in children with ocular surface disease, with or without dermatologic rosacea, to correctly diagnose ocular rosacea and avoid morbidity and complications.

Retinaldehyde alleviates rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal observations suggest that retinoic acid may be effective in mild rosacea. AIM: Our aim was to investigate, by an exploratory clinical and instrumental study, the effects of a topical formulation with the retinoic acid precursor retinaldehyde, in patients with vascular signs of facial rosacea. METHODS: Female patients were treated with a 0.05% retinaldehyde cream that was applied once daily for 6 months. Clinical assessments of persistent erythema and telangiectasia were performed every month, using a 4-point severity score (absent to severe). The clinical response for e…

Unilateral demodectic rosacea.

A unilateral rosacea-like chronic dermatitis of the right side of the face was shown to harbor innumerable Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis. Treatment with oral metronidazole suppressed the dermatitis but did not significantly reduce the Demodex population. Treatment with topical crotamiton eliminated the Demodex and was curative. These observations support the view that D. folliculorum and D. brevis may be pathogenic when they are present in extremely large numbers.
